Carlos Marcello was the reason that a Chinese Man became Sheriff of Jefferson Parish - Marcello’s domicile.... Marcello had his underlings draw or paint headphones on the political signs of the incumbent sheriff, Alvin Cronvich....The citizenry had an unabashed fear of the sheriff conducting illegal wiretaps after seeing all of Al Cronvich signs with wiretapping headphones painted on them...this was in the late 70’s ....I remember in the 1980’s conducting business in a Jefferson Parish courthouse and hearing a much older fellow - in his 70’s - say ...” How in the hell does a China man get elected to sheriff of Jefferson Parish to begin with”.... Carlos controlled everything... He had deep pockets-literally... pockets that went down to his knees and he would pull wads of cash out and pay off everybody....

Marcello bailed out businesses in debt in New Orleans and Shreveport which supported the Governor. Marcello owned him as well as several judges and police chiefs, captains, and patrolmen.

Marcello was recorded saying that mckeithen was afraid to so much as talk to him despite donating something like 160K to his campaign. Mckeithen does however contradict himself somewhat. He acts as if marcello has no power and is clean yet says people ran from marcellos offer of Churchill farms land for the super dome. He knew damn well he was a powerful mafia don and knew his influence in state politics and was fearful enough of him to run cover before this committee. He may have not had Mckeithen personally in his pocket but he had enough LA politicians in his pocket to still have influence over the man.
