      See my post above. I'm actually glad it wasn't published by a big publisher (I'm the type who would call Random House to say I really need to rewrite chapter 17, and would you change that comma to a semi-colon?) Getting distribution without an agent or publisher seems impossible, though. I guess I went about this back-assward. Any suggestions?

    • @hollybigelow5337
      @hollybigelow5337 2 года назад +1

      Congratulations! Just a tiny piece of advice. I'm not sure the age your book is geared towards, in general unless it's for young kids a good marketable length for the fantasy genre is around 30,000 - 50,000 words. Of course, there are two ways to get to that length. One would be to edit down the existing book. Another option is to divide the book into multiple books and choose to write a series rather than one single book. Good luck!

    As a trained editor and Linguistics major, if an editor says he/she will edit your book professionally in five hours, that person is lying and bad at their job. Editing takes time and research. It goes beyond looking for that missing or unnecessary apostrophe.
    I would give an editor at least, and I mean the very least, a week. However, if I want to ensure quality, I will ask the editor how long they think it would take them to do the job. Typically, a good editor would say they cannot say without having seen the product and will only estimate thereafter.
    The reason you still found errors is probably because you gave them a few days or hours.

      All writers are crediting their editors hugely...And I can see how much editing I do to my own text afterwards, just to make it better, so if somebody can improve from that then that good editor is worth their own weight in gold.

      Take it from someone who's spent her life leaving one idea for a bit and going to a new one... learn whatever it takes to commit to and focus on one project until it's completed, or you will sadly never be able to turn it into a job/career. You can change your habits! Start as soon as you can! But do keep your new ideas in a safe vault to pick from when you're ready for the next project. Good luck!

    Hi Gillian, lots of information and really good start going in to selfpublishing rute. As graphic designer and illustrator I can say that good designer will guide you true making decision regarding your cover or other design needs. So you don’t need many designs to decide what you like. My suggestion is to ask a few designers with good portfolio, do they have time talk to you, to figure out the design and how much will that cost. For example I would charge for something like that around 200$ but we would work on your cover together and come up with something beautiful that you really like. Otherwise, great video and thank you for making it. It’s really helpful.

    This was actually a very helpful video and very informative. Publishing a book isn't like I imagined it would be. I thought it would be a lot more complex, but this actually seems relatively simple. I want to write my first book. I think I won't worry about all the info in this video yet. For now I'll just focus on writing up my thoughts slowly, cleaning up spelling and grammar as I go along, then I can come back to this video and go through all the steps starting from getting it proof read. No point in overwhelming my mind worrying about all these steps until I've actually written the first draft of the book. I can kind of see that this process would become second nature to a person who's done this several times

    I'm curious as to why you refer to your book as a "BESTSELLER." The only one I can find is a poorly reviewed book on Amazon that has only sold 145 copies and has accusations of plagiarism. There is also a warning from Amazon of poor writing that needs to be corrected. Not a great resume.

    I'm a freelance editor, and I prefer to receive the whole book upfront. Take fiction, for example: Later text can have me rethinking earlier edits, as I gain a better understanding of some story element. That said, I understand what you're saying fully! That's why I offer a free sample beforehand; I want to know we're a fit as much as the author does.
    Now, however, I'm on to self-publishing, which is why I'm here. Haha. :)

      Take a great classic book, no longer copyrighted, and completely rewrite it in your style, making changes to the personality of the characters, location, modify the conflict, etc. Make it a better book, if you can. Do this very quickly without editing. Then do an edit and redo as much as you can again. If you do this effectively there probably will be little of the old book left. This helps you learn what a great book really is. Plus, you end up with a book.
