Very much so, it is a new spin on the classic Tamiya style of scale vehicles. Overall it is a great buggy, juts a few quirky things I am not sure if they really did their best effort in. The front springs make no sense to me and should have has a few more coils to them to make them right. The trap door for the battery compartment could have had some changes to make it better. I wish I could be a QC tester for them! LOL! Don't see that happening though! LOL!
Loved this video. Nice to see a transparent review. I love the looks of the bbx but not really looking for the latest and greatest. I might change my mind but for now it will stay in the hobby shop.
Thanks Keith! Some of the things in there made me scratch my head but I guess all of them do really. I am surprised you did not pick one up just to have in the NIB collection since it is the first of the chassis from them. It was an interesting build being something new so I did enjoy that and overall it is a good buggy. Just need to tighten the diff! Take care my friend and hope things are winding down for you and all the hobby room/museum is done or getting done!
At least is just a slipper I know I shouldn't but I crank all my slippers in so tightly they never slip again 😂 I know it's harder on the drive train but I always drive my buggies in loose dirt and sand and so far so good
It is a cool looking buggy and it ran well. I had to shut it down due to the slipping diff so I didn't fry that right away. I like the purple on it but I have seen a lot of different colors and they all look great. A few odd things I didn't quite like or understand but I think all of them have their quirks!
Sadly no slipper clutch installed in this one yet. It was the diff slipping. I am not a fan of the ball diffs. I am not that refined a driver I could tell the difference or not in the performance and I just want to build the trans once and not have to worry about it again! I am like you and even if it had a slipper clutch I would snug it down a bit more than called for and it would rarely if ever actually slip! LOL! I have never had a gear train issue from it. May have popped an axle or two of the years on the traxxas trucks like that but those were cheap and easy to replace!
@AddamsPlayground exactly I only have a couple ball diffs my two Ta 02 chassis thanks for the information if I build one I will snuck that diff tight posi track is better than lots of slipping I think
Thanks Peter! I knew I did not want the tire up there and I was not keen on leaving it wide open so some scrap lexan to the rescue! It is a quick and easy thing to do and make the white from the hood to the roof to the back nicely to tie it all together.
Mate I feel your pain I'm pretty experienced with stuck on pre order then waiting 12months makes it hard I can never compete with the rest of youtube because of how long we waite for a product release then the sting is over, but the build looks amazing as always I like the purple I think it looks good it ran really well some good lap times .... sorry I'm late just got back been camping and adventuring again hope you had a great weekend 👊
Hi there Mark! It is a great looking kit but the excessive wait did take the wind out of my sails a bit. It is odd how you guys occasionally get stuff way earlier than everyone else but the rest seems to really lag behind. You are so much closer to the source of these than I am but then again for other stuff it the other way around. It did really suck seeing everyone else getting theirs and making the videos while mine was in purgatory somewhere! I may be a little spoiled! LOL! No worries on the reply, I am glad you were out having a good time adventuring about! I hope you had a great time!
It would be a fun gig to do testing and making functional recommendations to them but I don't see one of the most secretive RC companies hunting me down for a tester but I can dream! LOL!
Great recap and run Addam. I like that you went the brushed way. This was essential for me to know and one of the reasons why I put this buggy on the long line. With the 5th wheel I'm complete with you, and I never understand why they promoted it, but didn't put it into the kit. Your rear cover looks good and is an awesome idea.
Thanks Dirk! I am still old school and prefer brushed motors and it runs well on the 17t. The buggy is geared low so you do need a faster motor to get it going. I would say the 15-17t is just about right for it. Anything lower and you are just going to be fighting wheel spin the whole time. The extra tire being promoted but not included was kind of dumb but at least it was not on the box like that and just an "option". I like the smooth panel on there and make the white flow from the front to the roof to the rear nicely. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thank you! I just got the gear diff and slipper clutch into it and took it out for a spin yesterday. I am much happier with it and do not have to worry about the slippy diff anymore!
It was a toss up between this and the metallic green. I have seem the green and it looked cool so I tried the purple out to see and I like it! It really pops in the sun. Sadly it was still really cloudy when I took the before pics and then the sun came out as I started running but by then it was covered in mud.
I am glad you enjoyed it. I am always going to give you the good and the bad of it even it sounds like I am complaining. I just want you all to know if I had a problem or trouble with something so you are not surprised by it or are aware of it later if you get one. It is a sharp looking buggy and I am glad I went with the purple, it looks cool. I was annoyed the diff was slipping as i was having fun with it but had to call it quits to keep from ruining it. I really prefer gear diffs, so much easier and I am not refined enough to appreciate any advantages to the ball diffs! LOL!
I used to use Meguiar's clear coat wheel cleaner and that used to take the chrome right off the plastic. Really looks nice in the purple! It looks like it drives pretty good, watch out with ball diffs you don't ever want those beauties slipping like a slipper clutch they go bad real fast.
Never tried that one, the degreaser is just too simple to not do it this way, the hardest part is rinsing them off! LOL! The purple turned out really nice and I was either going to do this or the metallic green. I had just seen someone else do the green so I opted for the purple. I have seen lots of different colors and they all look pretty good! Yeah I called it quits before I ruined it, I am not a fan of the ball diffs at all! I wish I had a gear diff for it and could just toss the ball one out completely! I am not refined enough to be able to tell any improvement with the ball diff so gears are good enough for my hack driving skills! LOL!
Thanks! I was not sure about the spare tire and I put it on there when building and it was not for me. I thought it looked unfinished back there so some quick trimming of some scrap lexan the rear cover made it much better. Plus it gave more room for sponsor stickers and stuff so that made the inner little kid happy too!
Thank you Paul! It turned out really nice looking with the purple paint, the gunmetal wheels and the rear deck cover. All in all it is a cool buggy and once I get the gear diff in there I think I will be very content with it. It will be back out for another run once those parts show up!
It will be back out there as soon as I get the gear diff in and get that replaced. I am also adding the slipper clutch in there at the same time. Ball diffs are great, for other folks! I am not a fan! LOL!!
@@AddamsPlayground I'm with you there, man. Never been a big fan of the ball diffs, either. I'm waiting on the slipper clutch inventory to make its way to Canada so I can grab one. I got your stickers the other day, too. Thanks again!
@@poorboysrc I am glad they showed up! I got my slipper clutch on Amazon of all places, all the big suppliers were out of stock! Of course my local shop has no idea what BBX even is LOL!!
It ran some pretty respectable lap times out there; that 17t HH motor definitely seemed like a good choice! I agree, give folks a gear diff option; I know that’s what I prefer! A ton of great information and insight you supplied us with Addam! When it was announced, I knew I wanted it, but the longer the release wait was the more my excitement died down. I imagine I’ll still get one at some point, it’s just not at the top of my list anymore. Yours looks awesome!👍😊
It ran times right there with the Gorgon! LOL! Not sure if that is bad for the BBX or great for the Gorgon! LOL! It did right around average for first run of a 2wd buggy honestly. If the ball diff had not been slipping I would have pushed it harder and it would have done a bit better. I get there is a appealing stigma to "Oh it has a ball diff so it must be a race buggy" but I am not a fan and I want to build the trans once and never have to think about it again!! Tamiya needs to stop announcing things 6 or 7 months in advance! especially when they could not deliver them in time. Then the whole mess with Horizon/Tower made it worse! I am still waiting on my Boomerang... Seem like the most recent stuff has a shorter arrival time so maybe the learned but I doubt it. I am sure at the beginning of 2024 they will announce more stuff we will have to wait 6 months for.
Hi Addam, a great looking Tamiya buggy for sure. I hear you with some of the design hints and tips, Tamiya may have been in the modelling business for some years, but one is never too old to listen to one’s customers 😊😊😊. I like the colour scheme of your BBX, certainly doesn’t hurt to place your own twist on your models and stand out from the rest. Always happy to hear you bud, take care, best wishes to you and the family 😊😊
Thanks John! Since this one is a bit more of a pricier kit from them I expect a bit more thought and refinement and for the most part it if but there were a few things that confused me on why they did it like that. As always all of the kits have their quirks and oddities to them that makes us scratch our heads, so this is no different! Maybe if the release something else on this chassis it will make more sense! It did turn out nice in the end and I am very happy with the looks of it! It drove well but the pesky ball diff cut it short. I have the gear diff on order as well as the slipper clutch so once those arrive and are installed I will get it back out! Take care John and have a great week!
I have this kit queued up for a build soon. Absolutely love your idea of using the scrap lexan (painted white) for the back panel where the spare would go.
You will enjoy the build and it runs nice also, just sung that ball diff up! LOL! I actually just ordered the gear diff and slipper clutch for it and I am going to get those installed soon and get away from the ball diff all together. I thought the back looked too open, like it was missing something so that scrap lexan panel worked great and it now takes the white on the hood and roof and carries it to the back so it flows nicely. Plus extra room for stickers!
Thanks! It does resemble it a little, needs a touch of pink though! I was torn between the purple and the metallic green, then the night before I painted it I saw someone had done the green so I went purple! The green looks good too and I think this is one that can be done in a lot of various colors and still look good.
Great build and overview. (All I really heard was "Fiddle fart"). Turns out I had almost all of the same issues or build challenges as you mentioned. You are on point! It also turns out that we have terrific taste in paint colors. :). Cheers!
LOL! Fiddle-fart has been a saying my whole life, something I picked up from my parents! LOL! I think all the Tamiya kits have their quirks and oddities so this one is no different and it is still a much better release than the flop of the TD4 last year! Did you also go with t e purple on yours? I think it looks great in a load of colors honestly, one of the few you can really get wild with. It was either going to do this or the metallic green. I had just seen someone else do the green so I opted for the purple. I look forward to seeing your jump together!
Looks great. I just finshed mine in box art. Went with the Tamiya esc and 15.5T brushless motor. Mine is mostly a shelf queen. It was a fun build. It's kinda like a Fighting buggy with a newer twist.
I do like the box art, I saw so many looking nice in different colors so it was either purple or the metallic green. I was happy I went with the purple. I do hope to run it some more once the gear diff shows up from Japan. It is reminiscent of the old school ones with some modern allowances.
WOW, love the color choices for the BBX and I like the look with no spare tire. The Super Clean trick is great to remove the chrome. I like the non-chrome look a lot better. Super Clean needs to sponsor your channel for that neat "hack" LOL The BBX is definitely on my list behind the Brat and TT02.
Thanks Ryan! It looks better out in the sun, the metallic purple really pops but unfortunately picture day was a cloudy day! The sun did come out when I hit the track but it was mostly covered in mud in those pics! I learned the Super Clean trick from Bob over at Hobby Concepts channel years ago when watching him build custom painted semi trucks. It works super well and the only hard work is pouring the super clean back into the bottle LOL! The BBX is a good buggy and looks fantastic. Just like any other kit there are pros and cons and things that could be improved but overall it was a good one and you will enjoy it if you get one!
So it's not all sweetness and light, eh, Addam?!??! 🤣🤣 Sounds just like almost every Tamiya I've built! They say Tamiya moves in mysterious ways and here is your proof! I agree, Tamiya should listen to us guys that buy and build all their products - hell yeah, even send us some pre-production kits and get some free and useful feedback! I can work from home too! 😅. Great overview, I'm sure this will come in handy if I ever get around to buying one... knowing the "little issues" is a great help to us out here! But anyway, I agree it's basically a lovely buggy and love your colour choice. Nice rip around the track, too. Take care, buddy!
You are very right Mark! All of them have their quirks and and oddities about them. I think this one was compounded by the disappointing wait for it. Overall it is a nice kit and looks fantastic. I had a good time building and of course had a few head scratching moments! It would be a dream job to be part of the testing team for these kits but don't see them sending any invites any time soon but I can dream! LOL! Take care Mark and have a great weekend!
Thanks! This is one kit that looks pretty good in a lot of different colors but I do think the purple looks pretty slick. The metallic gets lost on camera but looks good in person.
I just ordered one for mine and will be replacing that ball diff for some trusty old gears! I am going to try and find the slipper clutch for it as well. Figured I might as well replace both while I am in there! I am very happy with the looks of it, just need to get it reliable!
I prefer the older rear cab buggies as well. Those odd cab forward ones just look odd to me. This one was a cool one and is somewhat reminiscent of the older Fighting Buggy style of scale looks first and performance second but it does well in both areas.
Hi mate😁 That's the best BBX review I've seen, thanks for pointing out the details on what to look out for and how it can be improved. We hope you get that job with Tamiya mate!. We think it's a really cool looking buggy too and seems to have a lot of potential. This is a must watch video for anyone building a BBX👍 We love the rear cover plate you made👌🏅. Thanks for sharing your great video Addam!, I'm going to get back to my manflu🤒👍🦘🇦🇺
Hey there guys! I hope you two are doing well! It is a great looking buggy and very unique one too. I was super excited to get one when they announced it. The long wait took some wind out of my sails but it is still great looking and it ran pretty well too. I ordered the correct gear diff and the slipper clutch to replace that pesky ball diff, not a fan of those at all!! Once that gets here from Japan I will tear into and get that replace and then get it back out on the track. I think it will be a bit better and faster once that is done. I really through the rear panel looked pretty slick and made the white on the hood and roof flow nicely all the way back. I would love to have a testing gig like that but I would probably have to move to Japan to qualify as they are super secret about all there stuff so I doubt an invites will be coming my way! LOL! Take care guys and have a wonderful week!
@@AddamsPlayground Looking forward to your new parts when they arrive, it's got to be a massive improvement over stock. Thanks Addam we're doing ok mate, you have an awesome week and take care👍
It is a nice build just a few things to watch for. It sucked it took so long to get here and then the added delay of the whole Tower/Horizon Hobbies mess added more time to it. Better late than never!
@AddamsPlayground so true. I ordered some bits from Japan for mine...slipper and gear diff, if I remember correctly. Too much on the go to keep track of everything. I am struggling with what colour to paint it. Aluminum/bright silver? Gunmetal?? Black pearl??? Candy orange???? 🤷♂️
Overall it is a good buggy and it looks great. I ordered the gear diff and slipper clutch so as soon as those arrive they will get swapped in and I will get it back out for another drive! I think it will pick up some time out on the track with the reliable setup!
Thanks, it turned out looking pretty cool in the purple. I just got the gear diff and slipper clutch installed one Sunday and took it out for a run. It did a lot better and I like the gear diff a lot better! It really seems to whip around the corners a bit better and I also don't have to worry about it at all going forward! That diff is not going to have any problems with the 17t motor I have in it!
I have good days and bad days! But then again some days I try and others I try to hard! The try to hard days are the ones that usually stink! LOL! It did help it was not bone dry out there like it was all summer long too.
It is a nice kit, just a few things i questioned in their design of it. The buggy was a mess when I got done out there! Took quite a while to get that all cleaned up!
Very nice BBX you got there Addam! Love how the brush motor matches the colour scheme.👍😊 The delay in getting this kit is a bummer, but I’m glad you’ve got it built. It drives really well and looks great in action. I’d say it was worth the wait.😁
It is a good looking kit and the motor fit in very well and it is just about right for my little track. The delay took the mind out of my sails about it but I did enjoy the build and it ran well. The ball diff slipping cut the run short so i did not fry it. I just ordered the gear diff for it and will get that swapped in as soon as it gets here. I like the build it and forget it convenience of the gear diff!
It's a great machine. I had mine out at PLBTF and it was fantastic! Just for reference, I used a Sidewinder 4 in mine. The ESC cover doesn't even come close to covering it. If you want it to go faster, use a 5700KV brushless. It's a whole different buggy.
I just got the gear diff and slipper clutch in it today. I took it out for a spin and now that it does not have the slippy diff it drove much better. I know I could have just tightened it up but I am not a fan of them! The 17t is good for my small track so I will leave that in there for now. I have not viewed the video but I know there was a few good laps out there! Maybe one day I may stick a faster set up in there.
I find that with Tamiya’s we wait so long for them that the excitement wears off. I was super excited by the BBX when it was announced but haven’t got around to ordering one yet
Yeah the delayed release and then the issues with the hobby shop really took the wind out of my sails for it. I am still waiting for the Boomerang! At this point I am likely to get the Squash Van before I get the Boomerang! It is a decent buggy and once I get the ball diff tightened I think it will be a fun one too.
Thanks Mark! Honestly if I would have waited the 7 months or so to buy it when it was available I may have been a bit more reluctant to buy it. I go right onboard the hype train and pre-ordered it right away though. It is a cool buggy and it is nice to have the first of any new chassis from them. Overall I am happy with it, just wish it had a gear diff in there and I could have finished my run with it!
Thank you! Unfortunately when I went out to take pics it was very cloudy so the metallic was not really showing too well but it still looks snazzy in purple. Of course the sun came out for the after run pics where it was coated in mud! LOL!
Thanks Steve, it turned out looking pretty snazzy in the purple. It was either this or the metallic green and I had just seen a green one done before I started painting so I went with the purple to se how it would look.
Love that purple Addam!! Looks awesome dude 🙌🏻 Looks like it goes well on the track too dude. I am going to have to go back and see how those times compare to some of the other modern 2WD buggies.
Hey Addam, It is a great looking buggy, and you are correct, just a little something (not much) to make it stand away from the norm. I never thought about putting deeper cuts into the front tires to help them get more bite on a RWD/2WD. BBX ran very smooth on the track, sorry to hear about the diff slipping, it was a great run. Like hearing your opinion on certain aspects of the build, diff options, clips to hold the wires as well as putting in quick run 1080 esc. Thanks for providing all the insight. Take care and stay safe. 👍👍👍👍👍
Hey there Al! I do like the way it turned out and it looks good in purple and the gunmetal wheels. The chrome wheels are fine, I don't mind them personally but I figured I would go ahead and paint a set to set it apart (although it is one of the more common mods for this one!). I ordered the gear diff today and once it gets in and get it swapped out I will definitely take it out for another rip, I think there is a lot more to get out of it on the track. Glad you enjoy the ramblings, some of them can go on for a while since nothing is scripted and these are the thoughts in my head. It is never a lonely place in there, always something whirring about up there! LOL! Take care my friend!
Awesome Addam lovely build dude, looks nicer without the spare wheel on the back., been looking forward to your vid on the BBX 😊 love this buggy.. reminds me of a new Rough rider.. I do think Tamiya made an excellent job of the BBX 😊😊 ❤Pete
Overall yes, a very good buggy. Of course with any new kit there are some quirks and I do think I was kind of harsh on it some as I really had a hard time getting excited about it. The long time getting it and then having to watch everyone across the world build and run theirs there was little excitement left when doing mine. I still have a smile one my face out running it until I could tell the diff was slipping. I cleaned it up and it is waiting for me to tear it down and tighten that up. I am not a fan of the ball diffs! I am glad you enjoyed the video and I do like the rear end with the cover plate on there. The spare tire thing wasn't doing it for me. Take care Pete!
It is a cool buggy. Other than the electronics being a bit tight to get in (depending on what you use) it is a fairly straight forward build. It drives well, a bit squirrely like any 2wd buggy but it it pretty controllable. I hope you get on to build and run this summer!
Thanks Trey! It is a great looking buggy and very unique. It drives well but I am ditching the ball diff. I found out the correct gear diff and will be plopping that in once it gets here. I will be much more content with it then knowing it is goof proof and I can just drive it without listening for slipping! Also grabbed the slipper clutch for it so while I have it torn down I'll upgrade to that as well. I would love to have a testing gig like that but I would probably have to move to Japan to qualify as they are super secret about all there stuff so I doubt an invites will be coming my way! LOL!
This is an excellent review. The car looks great. I like the purple and modified wheels. I thought it look great after the run with a little dirt on it. I think pointing out the issues you had with the car will be helpful. Out of all the things you pointed out, the front springs are baffling to me. I am sure Tamiya has many, many springs it could have chosen. Like I have said and heard from others, I don't understand some of the things Tamiya does. You did an excellent job on the build.
I am glad you enjoyed it. I do like the way it turned out and it looks nice out in he sun. Sadly when I took the pics of it the sun was nowhere to be found! The metallic looks great in the sun! When I am recording these I am just going off the cuff and telling you all what I think, never thought out or scripted for sure. Some times when I am editing it I realize I am kind of down on things and seem to be overly critical of stuff. I guess being an all new kit and a modern release I figured they would be able sort stuff out properly before sending it out the door. The springs were silly, they could have easily fixed that issue from the start by adding a few more coils to it. I have seen springs made, it is not difficult to add in a few more wraps! Overall it is a cool and good kits, just like all of them it has its quirks and oddities!
Yeah that little switch is a pain to mount anywhere but the ESC itself. I could done that but then I would have had to leave the cover off of it and really wanted to hid all the multi color wires the best I could! It would be different but they are including the HW 1060 in most of their kits so why not make it compatible with them! I get it on the older kits where retro fitting those molds is not feasible but a brand new kit they had full control over. The springs made no sense up front either.
Great review Addam! Tamiya being Tamiya I'm afraid, something we are used to by now.... Just can't work out how delayed some of their releases can be, it's certainly not a good business model, but hey, we keep buying them non the less! Loving that livery, and the custom body panel on the rear mate. It's great to see so many people straying from the standard box art, and getting creative on this one. Seems as though electronics space is a bit of an issue with many of their new kits, which seems kinda weird as these days all the electrical components are smaller, and there's less of them! (no longer needing a MSC, second servo etc) You brought up a good point regarding the battery lead clip, and the allocation for a commonly used switch.... something that bugs me to, and I'm sure pretty much everyone else who builds their kits to!! You joke about offering to help them with these design flaws, but in all honesty they have been doing this 47 years now.... surely an organisation as large as Tamiya must have many, many staff in research and development that would have flagged up these issues many years ago?? 🤔 Don't get me wrong, I love Tamiya, but their logic on so many of their business modules just doesn't make any sense!! She looked great around the track, posting some nice times..... but boy I don't envy you with the clean up on that one!! 🤣 I thought those mud guards on the TD2 /TD4 were awful..... but, maybe I'm seeing some logic now! 😉 Cheers for the very honest, and factual run down on this lovely model..... I'm still tempted to say the least! 👍 👍 👍
Hey there James! Tamiya certainly marches to the beat of their own drum and always has. You are right though, we are kind of a slave to them as building kits nowadays is very limited to them and some from Kyosho and that's about it. I still wonder why the do so many odd things. I m sure they have plans for something else on this chassis where the choice here may be explained there. All kits have some oddities and quirks about them that make you wonder why it was done this way so this one is no different! It is a cool looking buggy and it drives nice, too bad it start slipping the diff and cut it short. I ordered the gear diff and the slipper clutch son once both of those get here i will tear it down and replace the diff with one I don't have to worry about in the future. The slipper clutch is one of those since I am in there upgrades! Take care my friend and enjoy the rest of your week!
@@AddamsPlayground The slipping diff is to be expected mate..... these usually need to be tightened up after a bedding in period of a run or two. And yeah, they are a bit of an inconvenience! Good luck with the gear diff and slipper fella, it's nice that we have the option to be able to mess about with these kinda things. Being able to fine tune things to our own desired specs/preference is one of the reasons I prefer kits to all these ready to run things that you see so much theses days! Happy tinkering mate, all the best! 😊 👍 👍 👍
That buggy is sweet ❤ 😮 I had the Hornet it was my first real RC car got it when I was like 10 or 12 I love it still have it. It’s like 30 something years old. I’ve swapped the electronics on it at least 3 times. This thing is super cool 😎 I want this. Great video. Definitely looks better with the wheel 🛞 hack you taught us. Thanks.
The BBX is a cool one and it drives really well. Light years better than the Hornet (I do love the Hornet!) as it is a much more refines design. The build of the buggy goes well, not really any gotcha moments really. Fitting the electronics and cutting out the body are the more tedious tasks. I have seen them painted dozens of colors and they all look good which is not something that can be said about others. I am glad you picked up some tricks from the video and when you get yours I am sure you will enjoy building it and having a blast driving it!
To be honest I believe I got the Hornet in 89 maybe 1990 and I got it from my grandmother because I was into models. Well, long story short, she went to a local hobby shop where we live in Orange County New York and told the hobby dealer that her grandson like to build models and did he have any big ones and he sold her that saying it was just a kit car. Needless to say I was ecstatic. Every birthday after that was a total let down. But I it took me about 2 weeks with my dad and brothers it was the best gift ever. Like I said I still run it. I run my cats like you do👍🏻 I don’t best on them or use ramps like the average basher enthusiast it doesn’t make sense to me. Why would you want to break it you just got it. If like to set up a track like yours I think that’s an ideal yard. Thanks bud take care.
Thanks Will! it turned out looking pretty sharp and I am glad I went with the purple. It drove well but I could hear the diff slipping so I had to pack it up early. I just ordered a gear diff to swap out the tedious ball diff!
@AddamsPlayground I seen that in the video when you stopped running it I'm going to pick one up here soon if you don't mind let me know what diff you go with
LOL! I have fun out there, not as much as I should sometimes but it is cool to be able to head out back and get some laps in! The BBX is a good running car. I am much more confident in it and prefer the way it drives with the gear diff now.
That looks really good in the purple scheme. I'm just a little disappointed that it appears to not come with motor and esc like we're used to from Tamiya. You get my vote for going to work for Tamiya.. lol
Thanks! I like the purple and the rear panel, it all seemed to work well together. It does not come with a motor or an ESC. Since I run brushed a 1060 and a Home Hobbies motor is only about $40 all together so not too bad. If you wanted to upgrade it and to go with brushless then you are probably going to sink more into it anyways so that is an expected expense. It did get a little noise from not including any electronics but I guess they figured we could only handle hex hardware and bearings being included in this one, anything else and we may not be able to contain ourselves! LOL!!! I would love to be a tester for Tamiya but I don't think I am getting an invite anytime soon and I would probably have to relocate to Japan and take some super secret blood oath to qualify! They are pretty secretive! LOL!!!
Thanks Duke! It is a great looking buggy and ran pretty well. Ditching the ball diff and going to a gear diff to avoid the troubles of the ball diff. So as soon as that gets here and in it I will try and get it back out for a better run, I think it will get around the track a bit better.
Great colour combo! I have loved the look of this since it was first released but the cost has put me off...until now. Found one at a good price and finally decided to go for it. As a long-term Tamiya fan, this has got to be one of the best new products for many years and I couldn't resist any longer.
Thanks! I have seen quite a few different color schemes that look really good on this buggy. Not too many you can get away with that but it works with this one. It is a nice kit and it looks and run really well. It is a on the pricier side but I am glad you found a deal on one. The only issues I have with it is the tight quarters to get the electronics in and remain hidden and the need for a battery lead extension when using most ESCs as it is a pain to try and hook it up without one. Once you get the electronics in you are good and power the lead extension is a minor thing. Have fun with yours!
Thanks! It turned out looking pretty sharp! I am glad I went with the purple. This is one that looks good in a wide range of colors. I have the gear diff on its way as well as the slipper clutch so it'll be back out once those are in.
@@AddamsPlayground I'm an old school kinda guy too and think a gear diff will not only be easier to build needs no adjustment and will be much more reliable. I also have a few rc cars with no diff at all and it's great fun watching people's face when your little vintage rc draws a huge number 11 on the track! Not many cars now can do that. I hope the BB series of cars continues to evolve. Keep the awesome vids coming I'm a new subscriber.
Yeah, man, it looks great with mud on it! Ha ha, nice that you included those after run photos... Yeah, I was in a bit of pain watching that run footage, definitely some slipping going on, I thought it was the slipper clutch that wasn't tight enough... Oddly enough, it might have helped the handling, not too much rear end action, it did some decent lap times, probably comparable to the Gorgon, ha ha! I agree with you, I also much prefer gear differentials. But I think I am that single one RC enthusiast who doesn't love the HW1060, ha ha... Great to see you finally got it and got it going, I have same syndrome as you, the hype drops after a while... Was a bummer with that hobby shop and stuff...
Yeah it was a mess after the run, It seems the track is always either too dry and dusty or too wet and muddy. It is hard to get out there in that perfect in between times! I wish it was the slipper, but I did not put one in it. Balls are frustrating and I don't really see the point unless it is a legit race buggy to have one. I think 99% of the people that have cars with them wouldn't really notice a difference in performance between a ball and a gear diff. Sadly it was getting times in line with the Gorgon! Funny but kind of bad too. I like the 1060, and I think so many other folks do as for $20-25 you cannot beat it. Now there are a lot of knockoffs out there on places like eBay that will go up in smoke in a heartbeat so you do have to be careful where you get them from. The excitement of getting slowly disappeared as the release date got pushed back and then the hobby shop snafu pushed it another month. By the time I had gotten it, I had already watched dozens and dozens of unboxing, build and run videos of it so there was no magic in doing mine. same thing is happening with the Boomerang as I still have not gotten that and no idea when it will be here.
What a lovely looking buggy Addam. It looks like it has some great metal bits but far to expensive for me at the moment. Looks like you had a rather big clean up after that track day😟😟
Thanks Rob! It is a good looking one but it is a bit pricy, especially considering you have to get your own ESC and motor for it as well. I got sucked into when they announced it and it was so different I had to get one. Yes, there was a lot of clean up to after that run!! It is the reason I don't often go out there when the track is still wet!!!
Hey looks great Addam. It's good to know about some of the down sides with this as it's not a cheap kit to buy. Shame that you had to wait so long but good to see it all done. The purple looks great and I like the wheels without the chrome. Pretty decent around the track too. Best wishes mate 😁👍👍
Thanks Pete! It was either going to be the purple or the metallic green, I opted for the purple as I may be using the green on another kit soon. The wait did take the wind out of my sails for it some but it is a cool buggy. It is on the pricier side especially since it comes with not motor or ESC to get you going. The gear diff is on its way as well as the slipper clutch so once those arrive it will hit the track again, hopefully a little drier next time! It was a mess after that short run!!
I just got done building one these. I still have to paint the body panels. That back plate that you added is a great idea and I am definitely going to do that as well! It really adds to the look of the buggy! On another note, I did not enjoy this build as much as I thought I would. In my own opinion this did not feel like I was building a Tamiya kit. I hated building the shocks the most. I also agree with you on the front springs. They could have just used longer springs and it would have look much cooler. I also don't like how the electronics are so crammed into the chassis. So overall I didn't enjoy the build as much as I wanted to, but the end result is an amazing looking buggy! I do catch myself staring at it a lot because it looks so great! Again, these are just my own opinions. Great video Addam! And yours looks awesome! 😀
It is a cool one and it was a fun build. Like all of them they have their quirks and oddities about them that can leave you scratching your head on why they chose to do it the way they did. Who knows what else they have planned for this chassis and maybe some of the pain points with this one are considerations for another design of it. I did like the back cover I made and It cleans it up and makes the white from the hood to the roof to the rear nicely. Have fun with yours!!!
It is a super cool looking rig but it can get pricy as you have the buggy to get and then a motor and ESC which can be cheap but if you go brushless can really add to the cost quickly! I am very curious as to what they may come out with next on this chassis or is it going to be a single shot from them. Time will tell.
I do like that these look really good in a number of colors! I wish it had not been cloudy when I went out and got the pics of it as the metallic is not showing up in the pics. It looks really nice out in the sunlight and you can see the sparkles!
Great honest comments about the BBX Addam! It looks really cool. I think Tamiya can do better, I did see some steps in the right direction which is encouraging. And yes, 100% agree on the esc and the 1060… I actually gave up trying to switch it on/off and just keep it on always and just plug the battery in when using it … the tiny switch is hard to get to and it’s too loose just taping it to the chassis 😮. Couldn’t hobbywing make the switch bigger?
Like all the kits it has quirks and oddities so really no different than the rest of them in the past. Overall it is good build and drives nice. I just ordered the gear diff for it and will be replacing that annoying ball diff. I am not a fan and just want to build the diff and not forget about it! I like the HW 1060 but it can be a real pain to mount them and be able to get to the switch. I have a couple where I have done the same thing and just leave it on as it is too much to fuss with otherwise!
Thanks Richard, I wanted to do something other than the blue so it was this or it was going to be the metallic green. I have seen that an it looks good too. I am sure they will find something to rearrange it into. It is not like Tamiya to make a single use chassis. There have been a few but only very few. If it is one thing they do well is reuse things over and over again in effective ways (mostly)!
@@AddamsPlayground yeah, wish i didnt go box art, but couldnt decide what to go for 😂 im waiting for the mid worlds to arrive next, then i’ll be getting bodys sent of for matching paint jobs, gotta have the cars looking great for the track in 2024 😎
I am hoping I don't do anything that rough to need it in there! LOL! There may be revisions on the next item out on that chassis that may resolve it completely. I just wish I could get a gear diff for it! Dall diff and me don't seem to get along well.
Ball diffs loosen up when you have it installed backwards. Never knew this until I got my first updated RC10T5m. I've never had to adjust it ONCE since I assembled it. Just take the time and flip it over ;)
Solved it by installed the gear diff. Not a fan of the ball diffs and much prefer to tune with grease or oils than fiddle with the ball diff. It is possible it was installed backwards but I have had similar issues with them loosening up after a run or tow with ones you cannot install incorrectly. Given the choice I will ditch the ball diff and go with gears!
I would live to see an old school tamiya promo of this buggy. Undercranked video with the drawling accent of Bud Voss giving the commentary like the fast attack. “It’s almost too realistic” and “this buggy will go where you want it to.”
I thought of using bead locks but it adds so much rotating mass to it. Works fine for the crawlers as they are so slow but jamming on the throttle and brakes with all the weight out there on a buggy can add a lot of extra stress on stuff. I am with you with disliking gluing up tires, I am not a big fan either!
hey Addam! I think this has got to be One of Tamiya's best looking kits. There are so many modern elements to it that make this awesome, but at the same time some valid complaints about this that would make a huge difference to those building and running this kit. its like , why didn't they go the extra 1/2 mile? hopefully somebody's listening out there at Tamiya! They'd be smart to hire someone like you ! this thing did very well around your track though and seemed very easy to drive and very composed. All in all I'm very impressed despite the subtleties. Your body work and attention to detail makes this better than box art any day of the week! Wicked nice job on this quirky but still awesome kit!
Thanks Robby, It is a great looking buggy and overall a good build and it ran well. In all the kits there are shortcoming and quirks and oddities with them. I would love to be a tester for them but i don't see them sending any invites anytime soon but I can dream! LOL! I loved the way it turned out and the purple and the gunmetal wheels made it look great. It even looked good covered in mud even though it made me cringe a bit! LOL! I hate cleaning up muddy cars!
Well I am not sure how working at tamiya would go? But it sure would be awesome getting all the rigs. lmao. Addam? Just trying to catch up where I can. LOVE the color you went with for this thing. I thought it actually drove pretty well on the track as well. Even though they are suppose to have steering issues. I was going to suggest putting the spare tire on the Front!! Might look ok, as well. Not as a shelf queen though. But for weight? It could work. ;) Nice work once again my friend. Have a great weeeknd
The buggy looks great and it drove well. I have the gear diff on order and the slipper clutch has shown up and those will be going in. I cut the front tires to see if that will help give it a little more dig into the dirt and if needed I can add some weight up front to give it some more grip too. Overall it is a good one but a little pricy but most new things are!
Great informative video Seems that you could definitely make Tamiya cars better if they had you as an advisor Amazing a large manufacturer can't get everything right That said at 52yrs old I just picked one up as my first car build Not a handy guy and to me looks a daunting task at this stage but I guess I will take my time and hope I can get it done
LOL! Maybe one day I'll be asked to be on their team! I am sure it is very hard to get everything right and make everyone happy. The bad thing is the do tend to put form over function in same areas and it can impact them negatively. Sometime they just make horrible decisions but I guess we all do from time to time! Congrats on getting one and you will enjoy it! Just take the steps one by one and double check everything before moving on and you will be just fine. Tamiya has probably the best instruction out there. It is only once in a while they make you scratch you head. Make sure to read all the text in the steps as occasionally there is important info in them the picture does not show. Mostly they are general tips or info on upgrades but it is best to read them all. Have fun with it!!
Looks great Addam...it definitely has its flaws, but so does every other Tamiya ever made...lol. I'm curious what else they will do with the BB-01 chassis.
Very true, they all have some sort of quirk or missed opportunity with them. I would love to be a QC tester for them, I don't see them offering that position to me though!! LOL! I am sure they will do something else on it but not sure if it will be another cage buggy or some sort of clam-shell top deck to make into another style?? It is not normal for them to make a single use chassis, they have built an empire in reusing and recycling parts and chassis of almost all their stuff. It is very rare we see a single chassis from them. we will have to wait and see. Hopefully it does not have a 7 month lead time on the next one! LOL!
@@AddamsPlayground look at the spare parts from this kit...they definitely have something else planned. I think I even saw body posts on one of the trees. Also, even if you were hired, you would probably be let go after the first week...as soon as you say "Why would you do it that way?"
Looks like it drives pretty good! Managed to snag one brand new unopened for $160. I'll go brushed at first since I need to burn through some motors I have laying around then put in a Hobbywing Max10 G2 in there. Should be pretty spicy with a brushless setup in there.
That is a heck of a deal, glad you snagged that! It run pretty well, I had to end it early due to the diff slipping. other than that is was great. It is geared a bit low so the brushless will pep it up! It does well with the 17t on my small track but on a bigger one a little faster would be better.
I am old school and tend to gravitate to the brushed motors in general. I am sure it is a blast on brushless and think the buggy can handle it all day long. I still prefer to go cheaper with the power plants and put that towards other kits to build as I much prefer the building now over the driving. Most of my driving now is on the beater rigs like my Arrma kits to drive without care and not have to clean them all up perfectly once I am done. Silly as it may seem that I where I am now in the hobby. I never thought I would be here but I am LOL!
Great Video! Which servo did you use? Also, what are those bricks you use for stands? Finally, what super clean product you used for cleaning the rim chrome? Sorry for all the questions. Thank You.
No worries, happy to answer them. I used a inexpensive low profile servo from Amazon, I have used them before and have not had any issues out of them. The Super Clean you can get in a spray bottle or by the gallon, just make sure it say full concentrate. The blocks are just foam yoga blocks I get from Amazon as well and I cut mine in half to get two blocks out of each on on my band saw but you can cut them with a fine toothed hacksaw or a long blade razor knife. Here are some links to the ones I have gotten from Amazon - Servo - amzn.to/496VO9F Yoga blocks - amzn.to/45yZYno Super Clean - amzn.to/48R3dJT
It is a cool looking buggy, I am not sure I could put it that high up on m list, at least not yet. I just got the gear diff and slipper clutch in the other day from Japan and I will be sticking those in there soon. I am hopeful after that I can drive it and not have to fuss or worry about the diff (I really do not like ball diffs!). I think once I get some good laps around the track with it then I will feel better about it.
@@AddamsPlayground Nice. Sounds like a fun project. Btw, working for Tamiya or any Japanese RC company in R&D would be an awesome gig. If only us westerners could shed our "Gung Ho" reputation...
Cool Addam! Glad to see you got it built. Like you it took so long to get here it kinda got put on the back burner. I’ll get to it but it’s not actually a priority now. I’ve planned my time for other things. Servo…what are you using? My gripe with the low profile servos are they are a rediculous amount of $$$$ I got a cheap one off Amazon for $27.00, I think, just so I’ve got something but the prices have been a bit of a turn off. Some are almost $200 each. Anyways..great stuff! I’m sure over time you’ll have more to say about it once it’s really run in. I love the look of the car and I’m very happy that Tamiya have finally come out with something truly new. Maybe the new version of the kit that’s coming out with the included hop ups will fix the front springs issue?
Yeah the giant delay too all the wind out of my sails for it. It was fun driving it except for the ball diff slipping. I tightened it up a lot and still ended up slipping on me. Not a fan of them but hopefully they release a gear diff for it. I used a similar low profile servo from Amazon as well. I am not sticking in a an expensive race servo. I can buy a lot of replacement servos for $200 LOL!!!I have them in several other kits and have had not issues. I am sure it ill hold up fine in here too. Those front springs really had me wondering about what they are doing. I assume the are re-used ones from another kit but why?
yeah very good question. I guess i'll find out the same issue when I finally get to mine. Maybe I'll have some ideas then. Thanks for the servo input...I'm with you 100%...I can do a lot with $200 in other areas so I'm not going to blow it on just one servo lol - There's definitely been some overall gripes on the gear box so far...the ball diff, make sure you get the slipper clutch for it etc. so I guess time will tell. But a geared differential is definitely going to be preferred. @@AddamsPlayground
Thanks! It is a cool buggy, a little fiddly to get the electronics in there but overall a nice one. I have replaced the ball diff with the gear diff and I like it a lot better now!
Regarding the ESC mounting: problem is that Tamiya mainly produces for Japan, where they usually run brushed or VERY mild brushless setups, with LiFe batteries. Tamiya racing leagues are pretty big there and they only use Tamiya stuff for those.
I get why it is tight but it is a struggle to get stuff in there where it fits, looks decent and you can stull turn it on. I am not a fan of wiring to begin with and have me trying to cram things in there with these blunt object I call fingers adds to the difficulty level a lot!!! LOL!!
I just ordered the gear diff for it and I may try and find a slipper clutch for it and do all that at the same time. I thought about LEDs but space for the light controller is very limited so I opted against trying to cram that in there! Overall it was a good build and it ran well, just need to tighten up the ball diff, well replace it as soon as the new one shows up!
The light pods all come with the kit and they will all take LEDs. I did not install a LED kit in mine as there is limited space already for stuff and I did not wat the hassle of finding a place to put it and route all the wiring out of sight. Any of the inexpensive light controllers you can find on Amazon should work fine. Placement and wire routing I am not sure about since I have not done it but with plenty of zip tied you should able to without too much extra time. I am not a fan of wiring stuff in general so the less I have to do the better LOL!
@@AddamsPlayground yes it is. When I do hobby grade upgrades to Nikko or radio shack stuff I always save the switches for the Tamiya that ya can’t use a modern switch on. If I don’t have any of those, I’ve been known to either wire the 2 wires together so it’s on all the time, or just leave the switch in the on position connected to the esc. It sucks but is what it is . Tamiya should totally hire you lol
Thanks, I have seen a lot with the tire on the back but I think it makes it look a bit bulky. With the filler panel on the back it keeps the leaner look and fills in the void back there. Hopefully they are back in stock by the time you make it over there! It is a really nice kit. I do prefer it now with the gear diff in it.
@AddamsPlayground I hope it's back in stick on the weekend it said it's out of stock. They have some good cheap upgrades. I can get all the upgrades for the same price. I like your purple it looks great 👍🏻 I might do a camel yellow but still not sure also depends if I can get one.
Hi..first of all congrats for your build. Can you share exact code of purple you used? And how many layers of spray you used? Thank you for your attention , regards
Thanks! It looks good in the purple! It is Tamiya PS-18 Metallic Purple and I put about 4 coats of the purple on and then backed it in one good coat of PS-12 silver and the then one last light coat of the purple so it is purple in and out. Take care!
@@emilioubertini5100 not a problem at all! The wheels were painted with Tamiya TS-38 Gun Metal and the tiny nuts on there were painted with a chrome paint pen.
I’m digging the purple, and no spare tire. I wish they’d have done a fatter rear tire like on a traditional buggy, although I understand this is based on a modern sand rail buggy, I prefer old school fat n skinnies
Thanks, I think it turned out looking pretty cool. They may have opted for the skinnier rear as more rear bite would have made it push even worse in the corners under power. It drove pretty well considering the met and muddy conditions of the track. I cannot seem to be able to get out when it is not dustbowl dry or sloppy wet these days! LOL!
Yeah, it is a Tamiya so plastics are going to be the chosen design more often than not LOL! It is on the pricier side but I was all in when it was announced s I didn't worry about it. I may be a bit more hesitant now. Overall it was a nice build and runs fine. I just ordered a gear diff for it that will be a few weeks getting here from Japan but I am not a fan of the ball diffs so worth the wait! I was not sure if it was going to be purple or green but I liked the purple on the dirt master so I picked it. I also had just seen a metallic green one done so I wanted to see the purple!
Hey Addam! I sure do admire your BBX build. I built mine a little back with an XL-5 esc & Titan 12t motor. I plan to paint mine here soon with pink paint splatter and purple. Hoping it turns out okay. Also, I think they used the ball diff as a minor acting slipper system since the top shaft does not have a set up for a slipper. Otherwise, a gear diff would be amazing! Take care brotha, thank you for the great videos!
Purple with pink splatter sounds great together! The Titan 12 t is a solid motor, lord knows I have put miles and miles on some of them. The ball diff can slip a little but this was slipping way too much and I was going to cook it if i didn't wrap it up. I did order the gear diff for it today and I need to go look to find a slipper clutch in stock somewhere for it. Since I am going to have to break it down for one I might as well go for both. Sad that it is gonna cost me another $70 to make it the way I want it but they all can't be made for me! LOL! Have fun with yours and email me a pic of it once you get it painted, I'd love to see it!
I mean a girl can dream right? The too soft/short front spring was just a fail, it feel good where it is but you are at the end of the adjustment for it so you'd have to buy new springs to stiffen it up if you wanted to. Also the battery wire keeper is a golden Idea I thought. I would work cheap too if I was getting a steady supply of stuff to build and test...
@@AddamsPlayground 100% agree with the battery wire. The springs are soft for sure, i noticed understeer on loose surface right away. Luckily havent had issues with the collars yet and the way mine it set i have lots of shock left
I did not, I got the slipping diff! I did find out the correct gear diff for it and got that ordered and the slipper clutch too so I will get those swapped out whenever they show up.
If you have bought a BBX and still not assembled it, buy a TA06 gear diff. Much nicer than a ball diff Addam: one thing that have always annoyed me about Tamiya buggies and that are the small and tight spaces for electronics
I did not know the TA06 diff worked in here! I will be getting one of those on order very soon! I am not a fan of the ball diff and I certainly won't be able to tell any difference between them other than the gear diff will just work all the time! LOL! This one does not have much room for the ESC especially if you are trying to run a larger brushless one. The Kyosho Legendary kits can be rather limited as well. All the kits have their quirks and oddities and this one is no different!
Same here. I was hoping that once I canceled the one and reordered the other it would get sent out right away but I have heard nothing. The response I got back from their customer service email was "iT iS ShoWiNg aS bAcKoRdRed sO oNce iT aRriVes yOu wILl gEt oNe". so I am not very confident in their canned "I don't know anything about what is going on responses. Overall this is the worst experience I have ever had with a company online. I have been ordering from Tower hobbies since the early late802 to early 90s and never had an issue, now it is awful!
I love building kits but seldom get out with others! I only know one other person local to me that runs RC. I am used to, pretty much been this way most of my life! LOL! Now that this has the gear diff I am happy with it. I am not a fan of the ball diffs, too fiddly and unnecessary for me and my iffy driving! LOL! Take care!
Bonjour, j'ai utilisé le Tamiya TS-38 Gunmetal sur les roues. Je les ai trempés dans le nettoyant Super Clean pour enlever le chrome, puis je les ai lavés dans de l'eau savonneuse avant de peindre.
sadly no, I did not buy the slipper clutch for this! It is the ball diff slipping. I have to tear into it and tighten it up some more. I am not a fan of them at all, I prefer the simplicity and durability of a good ol gear differential. Build it once and forget about!
@@AddamsPlayground I’ve only had 1 ball diff ever and that was my original Blackfoot. It was problematic and I switched it back to stock gears. 11 year old me couldn’t figure the ball diff out
Nooo Tamiya dont watch your videos but they do have spycameras all over your garden and i even saw one of theire spys peeking out of the hole in the jump and taking a picture when the BBX was flying over there. 😆🤣😂
LOL! Maybe that is what dig that hole! That is the filled in hole, just got washed out some from the rain. It was a lot bigger before! Something was trying to make a winter home in there I guess!

I think it is tradition at this point LOL! They have been doing it on all their kits for decades so it seems like it is a feature not a bug! LOL! The too short front springs really got me though, it is so easy to wrap a few more coils on them to make it right instead of good enough. Overall it is a cool kit and a much better release than the flop of the TD4!
@@adrianharrison5208 After the initial buzz of it and the first round of folks getting found out there were lots of issues to address it kind of fell off the map. I personally think it is ugly as sin too but I have seen a few that are not awful. The body shell that Owen from Revive RC did for it does help it out. The diff nuts failing, the axles popping out, the difficulty getting in electronics and the looks all made it extremely unappealing to me.
@@AddamsPlayground the electronics is a real pain that's true, I had mine as soon as they came out and I never had a problem with those plastic nuts. Running 2s and brushless. I think with us Tamiya lot so wrapped up in the classics Tamiya is always going to have a hard time with something new 🙂 personally I love the way they drive. Loving your channel, it's come on along way and always one of my favorite channels to watch 👍
LOVE how this rig looks.!! And it's a true Tamiya through and through. This is not a buggy you see everyday. Super cool video my bro. 💪💪💪
LOL!
Yea it makes the Hornet sit in the corner 😂
This is one of the best looking buggies i have seen from any company way cool i want one looks good on the track to good build tips Addam
Love the colour Addam, great choice. Also love the panel you put over the back section. Well done.😎
Ps I'd buy tamiya kits if you designed there kits
@@AddamsPlayground same here (mostly because I don't trust LiPos). Thanks for the good advice
Hello Addam, its a nice little buggy great paint scheme. Keep up the great work.
Thank you! I just got the gear diff and slipper clutch into it and took it out for a spin yesterday. I am much happier with it and do not have to worry about the slippy diff anymore!
Looks great. Love the purple. All about the look on that rig I say
It was a toss up between this and the metallic green. I have seem the green and it looked cool so I tried the purple out to see and I like it! It really pops in the sun. Sadly it was still really cloudy when I took the before pics and then the sun came out as I started running but by then it was covered in mud.
Thanks for another awesome video, love the sharing on flaws and fixes. This is one very good-looking buggy! 😋
LOL!
Looks great, like the lexan panel at the back instead of the spare wheel, tidy 👍🏻
Thanks! I was not sure about the spare tire and I put it on there when building and it was not for me. I thought it looked unfinished back there so some quick trimming of some scrap lexan the rear cover made it much better. Plus it gave more room for sponsor stickers and stuff so that made the inner little kid happy too!
Omg Addam that bbx looks awesome. Great paint job
Thank you Paul! It turned out really nice looking with the purple paint, the gunmetal wheels and the rear deck cover. All in all it is a cool buggy and once I get the gear diff in there I think I will be very content with it. It will be back out for another run once those parts show up!
Nice to see another BBX out there on the track. Great video, Addam.
@@AddamsPlayground haha, ain't that the way??? 🤦
Purple looks great! Reminds me of the Wynns Racing livery.
@@AddamsPlayground Cool! I did go with the metallic purple also. Yes editing now :)
What colour did you paint the wheels ?
Purple looks great !! Excellent job !!
Thanks! This is one kit that looks pretty good in a lot of different colors but I do think the purple looks pretty slick. The metallic gets lost on camera but looks good in person.
Looking good Addam! 👍😎 I know what you mean about ball diffs. Not a fan of them myself, so the first thing I did was replace it with a gear diff.
I just ordered one for mine and will be replacing that ball diff for some trusty old gears! I am going to try and find the slipper clutch for it as well. Figured I might as well replace both while I am in there! I am very happy with the looks of it, just need to get it reliable!
do love the look of these older lookin buggies more than the weird modern angular ones.
I prefer the older rear cab buggies as well. Those odd cab forward ones just look odd to me. This one was a cool one and is somewhat reminiscent of the older Fighting Buggy style of scale looks first and performance second but it does well in both areas.
Hi mate😁
That's the best BBX review I've seen, thanks for pointing out the details on what to look out for and how it can be improved. We hope you get that job with Tamiya mate!.
We think it's a really cool looking buggy too and seems to have a lot of potential.
This is a must watch video for anyone building a BBX👍
We love the rear cover plate you made👌🏅.
@@AddamsPlayground
Looking forward to your new parts when they arrive, it's got to be a massive improvement over stock.
Thanks Addam we're doing ok mate, you have an awesome week and take care👍
Nice! Mine arrived late July and it is still in the box waiting to get built.
No matter what it's definitely a great RC and it belongs on the shelf 😜
Loved the video awsome work
Overall it is a good buggy and it looks great. I ordered the gear diff and slipper clutch so as soon as those arrive they will get swapped in and I will get it back out for another drive! I think it will pick up some time out on the track with the reliable setup!
Nailed it on the Cons. Looks great.
Looks like you’re getting better on your track Addam.
I have good days and bad days! But then again some days I try and others I try to hard! The try to hard days are the ones that usually stink! LOL! It did help it was not bone dry out there like it was all summer long too.
bnNice shot! I'm building mine in order to make video to explore the model. Great novelty of the year, have fun. Ciao!!
It is a nice kit, just a few things i questioned in their design of it. The buggy was a mess when I got done out there! Took quite a while to get that all cleaned up!
Thanks@@AddamsPlayground
@@AddamsPlayground We need a 10th scale Kärcher!
Great video mate 👌 love what you have done with yours 👍 bit to expensive for me but I'll get one eventually ☺️
Thanks Mark! Honestly if I would have waited the 7 months or so to buy it when it was available I may have been a bit more reluctant to buy it. I go right onboard the hype train and pre-ordered it right away though. It is a cool buggy and it is nice to have the first of any new chassis from them. Overall I am happy with it, just wish it had a gear diff in there and I could have finished my run with it!
very nice Addam , looks good in purple , 😎👍👍👍
Thank you! Unfortunately when I went out to take pics it was very cloudy so the metallic was not really showing too well but it still looks snazzy in purple. Of course the sun came out for the after run pics where it was coated in mud! LOL!
Looks fantastic Addam 🤩👍
Thanks Steve, it turned out looking pretty snazzy in the purple. It was either this or the metallic green and I had just seen a green one done before I started painting so I went with the purple to se how it would look.
Love that purple Addam!! Looks awesome dude 🙌🏻 Looks like it goes well on the track too dude. I am going to have to go back and see how those times compare to some of the other modern 2WD buggies.
Thanks Craig! Of course when I take pics the sun hides and then when it is covered in mud the sun comes out! LOL! it really pops in the sun!
I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these kits
It is a cool buggy. Other than the electronics being a bit tight to get in (depending on what you use) it is a fairly straight forward build. It drives well, a bit squirrely like any 2wd buggy but it it pretty controllable. I hope you get on to build and run this summer!
Oooo purple nice my favourite color
It looks pretty slick in purple! This is one of the kits you can paint in pretty much any color and it looks good on it!
Looks good. Opinions are valid and welcomed. Maybe you can land a part time gig and help them refine their design specs. 😆
Overall it is a cool and good kits, just like all of them it has its quirks and oddities!
lovely looking thing mate . agree totally with the esc switch . really annoying.
(no longer needing a MSC, second servo etc)
You brought up a good point regarding the battery lead clip, and the allocation for a commonly used switch.... something that bugs me to, and I'm sure pretty much everyone else who builds their kits to!!
You joke about offering to help them with these design flaws, but in all honesty they have been doing this 47 years now.... surely an organisation as large as Tamiya must have many, many staff in research and development that would have flagged up these issues many years ago?? 🤔
Don't get me wrong, I love Tamiya, but their logic on so many of their business modules just doesn't make any sense!!
She looked great around the track, posting some nice times..... but boy I don't envy you with the clean up on that one!! 🤣
I thought those mud guards on the TD2 /TD4 were awful..... but, maybe I'm seeing some logic now! 😉
Cheers for the very honest, and factual run down on this lovely model.....
@@AddamsPlayground
The slipping diff is to be expected mate..... these usually need to be tightened up after a bedding in period of a run or two.
That buggy is sweet ❤ 😮
I had the Hornet it was my first real RC car got it when I was like 10 or 12 I love it still have it.
Yea this the Hornet on steroids. Nice buy at least it was worth your wait.
The BBX looks great Addam and it got around the track pretty well
Thanks Will! it turned out looking pretty sharp and I am glad I went with the purple. It drove well but I could hear the diff slipping so I had to pack it up early. I just ordered a gear diff to swap out the tedious ball diff!
@AddamsPlayground I seen that in the video when you stopped running it I'm going to pick one up here soon if you don't mind let me know what diff you go with
@@ThompsonRc I was told to get the #54471 diff for the TA06. It looks like the same thing, just full of geared goodness!

Good work Ads, wanna come play at your place!
Love the smoothness of the BBX
LOL!!!
Sweet looking RC and cool run
@@AddamsPlayground I went with a brown colour scheme on mine. Not used that before and not many vehicles you could get away with that colour!
Nice buggy and some good advice. Top job
Great review, I’m a big fan of the look of the buggy but I don’t think I’ll be picking one up anytime soon
It is a super cool looking rig but it can get pricy as you have the buggy to get and then a motor and ESC which can be cheap but if you go brushless can really add to the cost quickly! I am very curious as to what they may come out with next on this chassis or is it going to be a single shot from them. Time will tell.
@@AddamsPlayground based off what I’ve seen on social media it’s been a successful kit so I would imagine something else will come out for the chassis
Thank YOU for review build video, Apriciate it
Thanks! I am glad you enjoyed it! I have since put in the gear diff and I love it a lot more.
Love the color scheme! Looks Great!
Love the purple 👌 its one buggy i wish i could of kept, but needs must. Im just wondering if the chassis will be used on anything else 🤔
@@AddamsPlayground yeah, wish i didnt go box art, but couldnt decide what to go for 😂 im waiting for the mid worlds to arrive next, then i’ll be getting bodys sent of for matching paint jobs, gotta have the cars looking great for the track in 2024 😎
I used the 3mm threaded rod in my BBX rear shock mounts. So far, it hasn't bent, but time will tell.
@@AddamsPlayground you do you boo! Nobody sayin ya cant! Have fun, RC4lyf
I would live to see an old school tamiya promo of this buggy. Undercranked video with the drawling accent of Bud Voss giving the commentary like the fast attack. “It’s almost too realistic” and “this buggy will go where you want it to.”
I agree, that would be a super cool video! They should do it again for their releases but I don't see them being that creative anymore.
It's already been done with perfect execution! ruclips.net/video/twB8nLUgB30/видео.htmlsi=GtCLTxqbyoi2x2A7
i put bead locks on mine and am very happy with the looks and strength. i hate gluing tires
Great informative video
Seems that you could definitely make Tamiya cars better if they had you as an advisor
Amazing a large manufacturer can't get everything right
That said at 52yrs old I just picked one up as my first car build
Not a handy guy and to me looks a daunting task at this stage but I guess I will take my time and hope I can get it done
Nice collection
Thank you! It keeps me busy and out of trouble LOL!
It does well with the 17t on my small track but on a bigger one a little faster would be better.
my BBX, i put in a hobbywing MAX10 g2 140A esc and a 4000kv motor, plenty fun on 24t pinion!

Aside from the Kyosho Ultima and Javelin reissues, this is my favorite buggy since the ORIGINAL releases of the Ultima and Javelin.
Looks great 👍 to me.
LOL!!
It looked quite smooth on the track. Any plans to mod it (add LEDs, slipper clutch, etc)?
I just ordered the gear diff for it and I may try and find a slipper clutch for it and do all that at the same time. I thought about LEDs but space for the light controller is very limited so I opted against trying to cram that in there!
Overall it was a good build and it ran well, just need to tighten up the ball diff, well replace it as soon as the new one shows up!
Are those light kits workable ? Which are they ?
Love the build about to start one myself
The light pods all come with the kit and they will all take LEDs. I did not install a LED kit in mine as there is limited space already for stuff and I did not wat the hassle of finding a place to put it and route all the wiring out of sight. Any of the inexpensive light controllers you can find on Amazon should work fine. Placement and wire routing I am not sure about since I have not done it but with plenty of zip tied you should able to without too much extra time. I am not a fan of wiring stuff in general so the less I have to do the better LOL!
Battery wires and switches have been an issue with Tamiya vehicles since the beginning. And the old style switches are hard to come by now .
I do miss the old switches as in some kits it is really hard to find a spot to mount these other more modern ones!
I like the back plate hoping to pick up one next month duty free as it's a bargain but currently everyone even in Tokyo are sold out again 🤞
@@kanenstuff This is a buggy that seems to look good in many different colors! some kits seem to pull that off and others look odd in other colors.

LOL!
I considered the bbx, but for the price, I thought there was just too much plastic used on this model. Like your colour scheme though. 😁
LMAO! I can work from home just send me kits hahahahhaah !
You get the slipper clutche?
I did not, I got the slipping diff! I did find out the correct gear diff for it and got that ordered and the slipper clutch too so I will get those swapped out whenever they show up.
If you have bought a BBX and still not assembled it, buy a TA06 gear diff. Much nicer than a ball diff
Addam: one thing that have always annoyed me about Tamiya buggies and that are the small and tight spaces for electronics
@@AddamsPlayground nice! The TA06 fits in several Tamiya gearboxes, XV01, TD2/4, M07/08 prob some others i forgot to mention too

Here are the links where I picked up mine. They are of of the fronts right now but you can use the part numbers to possibly find them elsewhere.

. . . ok . . . I'm going to ask this slowly . . is that car __________ ?
cool, neat, mine, purple.... yup all those....
Yeah.. Tamiya makes questionable decisions with stuff they make.
@@AddamsPlaygroundDo you really think the TD4 was a flop?
