    So something terrifying about this prototype is it’s designed to have a greatly reduced thermal signature, and the hybrid diesel/electric drive has an electric only mode. This means at night, the tank would be almost completely invisible to 1st and 2nd gen thermal optics, and make very little noise.

      You can run all the surveillance equipment for hours on the battery. It can sit there and observe while the engine is cold. It can track the enemy, fire on them and the enemy can’t fire back because you can’t be seen.

    The Abrams X is a testbed maybe 70% of this tech will be used. The US army is reluctant to give up it's 4th crew member and the autoloader. Tho i could imagine keeping the 4th member on as a WSO (Weapon System officer) that would control the drone as well as defensive systems and as a pair of extra eyes defending the tank and extra set of hands during field maintenance.

    • @woiace

    • @SasoriZert
      @SasoriZert Год назад +9

      Autoloaders aren't always a good idea have you ever considered why Abrams don't have one. It's cause the ammo when the loader isn't grabbing a fresh round to load up is behind a big plate of steel in a ammo compartment. So unless your hit while he is grabbing a round you don't have to worry about the ammo all going off at once. But with a autoloader you can get hit at any time in a the turret and have it explode on you and kill all of your crew before they even have a chance to escape.

    • @mr6johnclark
      @mr6johnclark Год назад +1

      @@SasoriZert of course its faster... depends on the stamina of the 20+ year old slinging the rounds. We're just discussing here keeping the 4th crew man if they DO keep the autoloader. None of these systems arent adopted yet.

    I was an M1a1 crewman in the mid 90s. There is a down side to not having a loader, that was the guy that got send it do all the dismount duties. Like observation and listening posts, guard duty and so many other things. Though he was used as a runner a lot of the time because he was the least experienced in the crew what he did still contributed much to the readiness of the tank as a whole.

    My ex son-in-law was a combat medic, stationed at Ft. Stewart in GA, and I got to see a number of tanks during my visits to the daughter and grandbaby there. The Abrams is an amazing beast as is. To be totally honest, as a big fan of the Armored Cav, Artillery, and all things Infantry (daughter was infantry at the Big Red 1 in Kansas), the "X" is a terrifying leap forward. After working in IT for a number of years, seeing AI taking over so much of the information technology world (IT and IoT (Internet of Things)), I hate to imagine having machines with this capability being controlled by some dictator somewhere. And, as we all know, it's not a matter of good guys keeping the best toys, it's a matter of who can afford them.

    My take on this whole ordeal - Remember: what you know, our enemies know. A project so advanced being brought out to the public sphere like this indicates a propagandistic value rather than a strategic one. If this were truly a skunkworks-level military project - the silver bullet that destroys anything and everything our enemies could possibly fathom to field, we wouldn't be hearing about it until a year from when it had already started production and neither would our enemies.
    If anything, this tank is a several billion dollar threat; it isn't going to be fielded anytime soon because if even one is destroyed it loses all of its value.

A 4 gauge tank mounted shotgun that is guided by radar to target and shoot down drones could work. It's greatest ability upgrade seems to be that it will remotely share the info of what destroyed it to air assets. The air assets can then destroy whatever it was that targeted our tank. I prefer the AI package and the tank operating as an unmanned vehicle. At least in high threat environments. But something tells me we are still a long way from being able to do that efficiently and effectively.
