You better be in perfect shape! I actually had the job (conductor) in February 2012. I was told,"Your hired'if you can pass all the checks & physical".Well! all background checks were done and finished.I took a Physical here in Birmingham Al. I then was instructed to go to Atlanta Ga.for another test. this is the one that got me! A "3 min, step test",strength test, and a back test! All hooked up to a heart monitor! I was in trouble when he introduced himself as the aerobic instructor! DREAM KILLED

Yes brakeman or engineer got to go off the line so brakeman first and engineer second. I really admire you guys it's tough work and I would do anything to get a ride on railroad that would be the ultimate I'm disabled I have no. Functionality on my right side but I left side perfect thank you very much. Oh yeah thank you.

Sounds like my class when I went to trucking school. We was suppose to have 18 and after the first day we had 10 by the end of the third week we had 5. I appreciate you going over this and explaining everything.

I work for UPRR as a conductor and it is a hard lifestyle being on call 24/7. Missing Holidays is a bummer. I plan on demoting myself back to a switchman and to work in the yards with a set schedule on a daily preference board. Anyway I would like to see a small town High School be built. Plastic people have to go to school too! Thanks for the great videos and keep them coming!

I can believe that. Since we have to work in this weather, they may see it as a precursor to this repeating when he is needed for work. They are very strict about their training classes lately. Our crew callers are in sunny jacksonville, and have no idea how much snow we get up here.

Great little project this week. That big sheet of "bricks" is very useful.. I have to find something like that here in Europe :)
Good luck with the job and everything!

Aw. What a cute little post office. (Or other tiny office building)

  • @djstrains

I'd say zinc coating plants offer another cool industry. You run boxcars and coil cars into the building where they can do the coating. Then coils can go straight to auto makers. Also go from coil to pipe making.

I worked for PennCentral in the summer of 1968 while in college. That was enough for me. The extra board schedule was brutal and I had a three hour drive to Cleveland to get my trains. My future mother-in-law got me the job. It was OK for a summer job, but not a career. I agree that you should have your fun firs then join the railroad, unless you want to be on call the rest of your life. I'd rather run trains in the basement.

it's not the only job where you get waved at. I've done horse and carriage tours in Philadelphia, that gets waved at all day too.
but your eperience as an engineer is thumbs up.

hahaha, I told you there was going to be a lot of math involved. lol. Basically, every time he said a requirement, we lost half of the remaining class..it was like a mass exodus.

you go where the work is. You have a 2 hr call to get to work, so it helps to be close. If your terminal shuts down, well, then it is time to either quit or move. I moved once, so far.

my HONEST advice, and you may not want to hear it, is don't join the railroad until you are in mid 20's. The reason is because you will never get to experience all the fun of being 18-23 while on the rr. Those yrs are my favorite memories of chasing girls, seeing new places, making new friends, getting in trouble (see girls, lol). When you are in your 40's, you'll look back on those years as the greatest in your life. But the railroad will take that away.

Outside of a steel mill, what type of industries use coil steel cars? Scratch building is really the way to go cause the model manufactures don't always produce what we'd like to have on our layout. BTW CSX has a training center at Tilford Yard in Atlanta Ga. Its best to try on get on with the railroad and get some tenure before getting married etc at least you'll some good senority.

Thanks DJ for the the vid like the post office should of gave you something harder like a gas station lol. But I feel you on that railroad stuff I drive a semi for a living and that takes a lot away in your life but I started in my late 20s it has been real good to me but latley I have trying to get in with up or bnsf where I live in socal.

A good video DJ, I've been considering a Railroading Job. It's that or possibly one in law enforcement, I know BNSF has a start at conductor and after about 10 years they may promote to engineer. Does one have to move with the job?

About the military: Does JROTC count?
I don't drive (at all) I'm a white male, and I have PTSD and a felony (expunged record so it doesn't count) but my attention to detail is absolutely superb (Asperger's Syndrome will do that) but I LOVE trains, especially steam. Got a Lionel Vision Line Big Boy (4014, hope she runs for real some day) and I love it to death. I even "dress it up" and take it to cosplays as the star attraction (Big One from the anime Galaxy Railways was a modified Big Boy.)
I want a job with Union Pacific someday.

Occasionally. My issue is that offer no discounts or sales ever. It is an hour from my house, so I must NEED it to make the drive and price. Their selection is fantastic though!

    • @modelman2174
      @modelman2174 9 лет назад +1

They do have good selection. You are right bout the sales though, there are none usually. 2 years ago I bought an EMD NW2 switcher, dcc on board with paragon sound, was 3 yrs old. paid original msrp for it. whatever. I'm in there so much they should just give me free stuff lol just kidding

You lose friends, cause they will never understand your schedule. Young girls will not like you living on call, and missing so many holidays, etc. You have to trust me on this, get your memories now! The railroad will still be here when you are in your mid 20's. They may not even hire you, because they fear your age will put you in party mode, and not be a reliable worker. Sorry, but I always tell the truth.

+Union Pacific Fan obviously you knew I meant each time we lost half of the remaining applicants. We went from hundreds down to about 25 very quickly. They only needed 6 and I made it in that 6.
