If he was a Superstar in todays league it would be foolish to risk gambling away your career when Superstars today sign for no less than 150 mil. So it’s highly unlikely to see a Superstar in this position. Superstars also must have great stats to even become a superstar, so you won’t see them throwing away games. You have to be mediocre or less to take this risk.

It’s just so weird that this is a lifetime ban penalty but yet an actual dangerous act of waving a gun around, threatening people and supporting violence isn’t? That can actually cause harm and kill to all parties involved and the fact that OTHER NBA players had lasers on them in a car is extremely serious. Yet they ban this for life that doesn’t harm anyone. Sucks to be him shouldn’t have done it anyway obviously but man the double standards and world we live in smh. Btw neither should be a life time ban imo but still serious penalties regardless but this should be the less severe by far

A dose of reality for people blaming legalized sports betting:
Gambling will always exist - whether or not it is legal. If it's illegal, gamblers will just move to the black market, where this stuff is much harder to catch. For example, sports betting companies actually informed the NBA about suspicious betting activity which sparked this investigation. Given how much data these companies generate, it's a lot easier to identify irregularities and catch guys trying to do this. And it's also in their business interest to catch them, so they will likely continue cooperating with sports leagues.
For people worried that the league won't punish stars that attempt this:
Stars in the major American sports leagues make WAY too much money for this to make any sense from a risk/reward standpoint. The most likely people to try this are players like Jontay - basically fringe players. But after this incident, I feel like even these players are probably not going to attempt this - at least not on any legal platforms.

One of the more bizarre athlete wagering stories that received minimal national coverage:
In January 2022, leading Parx Racing jockey Mychel J. Sanchez was suspended a (meager) 60 days by the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission for betting against himself in a number of races.
He opened a TVG account in his own name in late December 2021 and started placing bets. Sanchez was allowed to return to the afternoon oval after exiting the sin bin and continues to ride at the track.
From the jockey's attorney -- with a little research, Porter had a ready-made defense on his offensive behavior: "(Sanchez) started betting. Not in any cheating way, just as a way of coping with the pain he was experiencing. He's been feeling low for some time and it's been building up in him."
