    This is a tried and true method. I moved 400G of stuff from one laptop to another using an 8G stick. Took forever, but got it done haha.
    If you are moving massive amounts of data an external HD is worth it, plus you have a back-up. External storage is very affordable, and you get great storage space. Remember when we had random stacks of CDs all over our desks? Well now some of us have stacks of external HDs serving pretty much the same purpose as the CD lol.

    I put all of my files in a zipped folder and uploaded it to my google drive. Then created a link for the zipped file and sent it from my email address to another email address that I created. Then I opened my email on my new computer and downloaded the files where I wanted them.
    It is very simple and easy to do. Don't get me wrong! Your way works just fine but doing it with google drive is very fast and easy.

    Program or Software might be different, I'm not sure. Can you do a couple of software . I would like to copy a couple of software onto a brand new computer. ie. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere. Thanks.

    • @jamiewagner
      @jamiewagner  2 года назад

      Typically you need to reinstall those type of things onto a new system. There is software that allows for the transfer of things like that but it tends to have issues, so I recommend you do a fresh install of them onto your new system. It will help you have less headaches in the future believe me.

    Can you do the same thing to transfer programs from your old computer to the new one?

    • @jamiewagner
      @jamiewagner  5 лет назад

      Programs usually always need reinstalled because they also install to the registry. Transferring programs is sometimes more difficult to do unless you have a lot of stuff setup to do it. I usually end up just reinstalling all my programs.

    • @jamiewagner
      @jamiewagner  2 года назад +1

      I would hook up another monitor so you can see but if you can’t hook up a different monitor or a different screen then you would have to shut the computer off and remove the hard drive from the computer and you would have to buy an adapter and hook the hard drive up to the new computer so you could copy your files off at that way

    I have no idea if you still respond to comments here, but here’s my situation: I have a folder that’s 900 GB I want to transfer, but only 475 GB of external storage space, is there a way I can make sure I get through all the files in 2 attempts or do if you to guess and check that I don’t do to many files at once?

    • @jamiewagner
      @jamiewagner  2 года назад

      you can do two attempts, like split it in half, but your external drive needs to be bigger than 900gb so you can fit all the 900gb data on it. I recommend getting a 2TB external drive, then you can just copy the entire 900gb over to it one time.

    I have a question about the usb flash drive. If I copy over from my pc to the flash drive a documents folder with say 50 documents in it. If at the end of the month I have 10 new documents, can I just add them to the flash drive documents folder and then the folder will have 60 documents? Basically I want to have a backup but be able to add new things to it as time goes by so that it will always be current. Does a flash drive work like that or do I have to reformat (or whatever it would be called) and then do the whole folder again?
    As you can tell I am new to this particular technology

    • @jamiewagner
      @jamiewagner  3 года назад +1

      no you can do it just like your saying. You can just keep adding stuff and like you said it will go to 60 and so on. If you ever choose to format it again that will cause you to loose everything you put on it. Normally you don't really have to format it unless your trying to delete everything from it and make it new again.

    What about transferring software such as photoshop etc.? how is that done?

    • @jamiewagner
      @jamiewagner  4 года назад

      That’s fine differently than this, it’s because it’s actually installed on your system which means it’s installed in the registry and other parts of your computer and it’s not as simple as this video to just copy it over. There are programs you can use to transfer programs like that over to another computer but it’s best just to reinstall it on the new computer.

    I have about 1tb of games and documents can I use a external ssd with 256 gb and transfer bit by bit and then when it’s transferred delete it of the ssd then repeat it, would it work and not lose any data, since I have lots of presets in softwares ect would all of that go onto my new pc ? Or would I have to reinstall all of it

    • @jamiewagner

      Yeah you could do bit by bit but as far as installed programs or installed software you would need to reinstall that stuff, that’s not gonna copy over like pictures would or documents or videos and music would. If something is installed that’s different, usually you need to reinstall software and programs
