I'm late to the discussion, but regarding complaints about the short hour hand, think about it from a design engineering perspective. The GMT hand needs to clear the applied indexes. The minute hand needs to clear the GMT hand. The seconds hand needs to clear the minute hand. All of that needs to clear the hour hand in a 10.5mm tall case, half of which is occupied by the movement and dial. The only way to do that is to shorten the hour hand so that it can be recessed into the plane of the indices. Otherwise, the watch would be at least 12mm tall. It's truly impressive design work that deserves to be admired rather than criticized.
Just picked one of these up in that blue. Recent ones have the quick adjust clasp, which is super nice. Mine unfortunately does not have the perlage on the movement, which is a bit unfortunate, but it's minor gripe considering how comfortable this watch is on wrist. The finishing is also gorgeous. This one is a keeper for sure. I have to agree, though, that the Atlas is *the one* from Monta, at least until they come out with something that's even better.
The white dial of this version is STUNNING!!!!
Couldn't agree more.
Another great video my man! Really good looking watch!
Thank you and agreed!
I like the brushing on the bezel. It seems Monta is really developing their own DNA across the range of watches. Their new watches "look" like a Monta if you know what I mean.
Ordered mine a month ago. Looking forward to receiving it!!!😎
flipped my Skyquest to put in the order for the Atlas as soon the news released. Thanks for your review!
🤘 No wrong choice there.
It's a cool new addition to the Monta lineup. Glad i got to see them and this blue and white dial versions at the W&W Wind-Up a couple weekends ago in San Francisco. The Atlas would have been in consideration currently if ai didn't already own 3 gmts. Well, sold 1 not too long ago, but still trying to keep my watch collection smaller and more carefully considered this year.
I hear you... My personal collection consists of four Seikos, an Adanac, a Monta & my Helson. That’s excluding gifts and so forth... I think I have enough diver’s at this point, all three of which are black (would like to change that), that’s the only thing I’d like to reduce in scale. Not sure which goes though.
@@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett ahh... decisions, decisions..
Patrick, what are your thoughts about the dial text "GMT-150 m"? I keep thinking that it looks unbalanced. The "m" seems to be floating by itself on the right, and the "GMT-150" seems too close/connected on the left. I feel like it would be more balanced and logical to separate "GMT-150" with a bit of space around the "-" since those terms are communicating completely different things, and/or join the "150 m" by reducing the space between them a bit since they are related terms and used together to communicate the WR. Sort of like going from "GMT-150 m" to "GMT - 150 m". This would balance the top and bottom lines of text spatially and read more logically. I sent this feedback to Monta after noticing someone else saying the same thing online. It's obviously nitpicking, but I can't help but think that it looks like a typo and could be fixed with a tiny adjustment to the spacing.
Personally... I am not a fan of the convention of placing "Diver's," "GMT," or any such text at the bottom of any watch dial... I think we add too much superfluous text to watches in general. "Atlas" should *imply* "GMT," as "Oceanking" implies "Diver" for that range. Rolex does it right: when you read "Submariner," you know you are looking at a dive watch... Seiko suffers from this issue of unnecessary text... Anyways, I digress. More to your point, as this is the standard for watch designers: I agree! It didn't bother me day-to-day, but as you've brought it up... The "m" should be closer, most certainly. That "GMT - 150m" could afford to be tightened up and centered under Atlas, same font size. It stands out now, haha. Thanks for that.
@@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett It's one of those things that shouldn't matter very much, but once you notice it, it's hard to unsee. Looking at the Oceanking and Skyquest, they seem more balanced with their spacing around the "-", so I'm kind of surprised that they did the Atlas this way. That said, I did preorder a black Atlas and love it otherwise. Hoping that someone at Monta will agree and tweak the text in the production run, but that might be an unrealistic hope. Also, excellent review, as always.
Yep...nice watch...great presentation...another one in the bag Patrick...well done man :)
Hi! Did you ask me about buying my Squale Tiger a month back? If so, let me know. I finally have the watch back. 👌 (Email is in Description).
Would love this watch if it was time only and had the ratcheting clasp. Possibly the perfect watch with that navy blue dial.
Thoughts on GMT’s sans date?
Take Time, w/Patrick Marlett Would be interesting to see a GMT without a date but not sure how many people would actually like that design. I’m just not a complications guy. I love 3 hand time only watches and there just aren’t that many. I see many great designs and then they muck it the symmetry with a date at 3 or even worse, 4 or 4 1/2. And then sometimes a non-matching colored date wheel really throws off the overall aesthetics.
Luckily for me, I have the Omega Railmaster 2503.52 which is as close to a perfect watch for me. If only the bracelet had micro adjustments.
Anyway, navy blue is my favorite color and would love to find a time only in that dial color around the desired size 40/20/48/12 with a bracelet that has screws and a ratcheting clasp. One can dream.
Thanks! This could be my next watch. What do you think of the Atlas with a leather strap instead of the bracelet as a dress watch?
Their accessories are top notch. The fitted leather strap I’d go for on the blue dial would be the light/tan strap. I think it’d make for a great dress watch with one. 👌
Take Time, w/Patrick Marlett Thanks! Was thinking maybe the opaline silver with the black strap, except the white stitching puts me off.
Shhhh. Don't tell, I'm watching this review at work as we speak, I could not help myself, I loves me sum Take Time reviews and loves me sum Monta
Haha, which Monta you own/looking to own?
I knew there was a reason not to pick-up the Monta Triumph earlier this year. Here you have about the same case and bracelet and get the GMT function to boot from this Atlas. I always thought the Triumph would be a good alternative to the Rolex Exp. I (Not A Replacement for all you pitch fork carrying Rolex fans). But now you an extra GMT feature! Very cool...
It’s kinda the perfect choice for those wanting something quintessential “Monta.”
Patrick, I tend to shop for sports watches that are slim (11 mm and under) and a bit more dressy because they can be dressed up or down. Can the hour hand on this jump hours free of the minute hand when setting time?
Sorry about that. It’s a quickset date/GMT hand jumps an hour to set secondary time zone. The main hour/minute move like any other watch in the second position.
‘Traveller’s Watch”! You’re welcome! And the hair is MAGNIFICENT!
💁♂️
The bracelet of the V2 Ocean King will fit all the Monta watches (besides the V1 OK). I have the V2 Gilt OK and pre-ordered the Altas in Monta Blue. So I’ll be wearing my OK on rubber and the Atlas with the OK bracelet. Can’t wait! Thanks for the sweet video Patrick!
Great video. The atlas is so tempting. I picked up a skyquest earlier this year thinking I would have it for a while and then move onto the next watch. BUT DAMN! I can't stop wearing it. Its become one of my favorites.
That’s awesome to hear! I really do love the models they’re providing. Looking forward to all future designs as well.
I own 2 Monta's currently. By far my favorite watch brand. Can't recommend them enough.
Monta is killing it!
All these Monta offerings seem appealing to me, great review mate. Cheers
Monta’s logo is just killer!
Hey Patrick,
I've had my eye on this since it was announced. You didn't show us the crown adjustments. Does the SW330 movement have a quick set hour without hacking like some other GMTs? Does it have quick set date or does one have to run the hour hand around to change the date? This is a gorgeous watch and I'm glad I held off on the Triumph. Great content as always Patrick!
Sorry about that. It’s a quickset date/GMT hand jumps an hour to set secondary time zone. The main hour/minute move like any other watch in the second position.
I am on the pre-order for the silver Atlas, and am trying to get funds together for the gilt No-Date Ocean King. I think those two watches could be a perfect 2 watch collection (although I will still have a Nomos Orion and Oris Pointer Date on my radar)
I really want a no-date, Gilt Dial OK... Really bad.
please review the yema superman heritage!
Great review! I can't wait to get mine!
This is the watch review I’ve been waiting for!
This is probably my favourite watch I've seen this year, well among the ones I could maybe afford in the foreseeable future. The case construction looks solid as heck, the blue dial is gorgeous and the red accents give it just enough pop. I also love the bracelet with those subtle beveled edges, the clasp looks great as well. I just wish the price was a tad more affordable.
How does this Monta compare to the Christopher Ward?
Monta > Christopher Ward. In terms of styling, craftsmanship and customer service? They’re both damned close, but I prefer Monta. On a budget, C. Ward is great value.
Christopher ward is nice for the price but Monta destroys them in quality and feel.
Once again a really good looking watch from Monta.
I would love to see some decoration work on that movement tough. Looks a bit boring to me.
Yeah, I wasn’t positive that the movement finishing was accurate to the end product... As it stands, it’s similar to the Triumph’s. Nothing too ornate, with the Monta Logo on the oscillating wheel.
Silly question, but can you set that GMT hand to another time zone, or is just the same time but on a 24 hour scale?
Not silly. 👌 It can move independently, I just had it set as a twenty four hour recorder.
@@TakeTimewPatrickMarlett Thank you! Love Monta watches, got a Triumph already (after seeing your video) and really enjoy your videos with the Monta people. I think they are really something very special.
I really like the styling and aesthetic of Monta but for my taste all the hands could be a few milimeters longer.
Also, nice to see a reviewer with the same size wrist as I do. I have a hard time getting past Teddy Bulbasaur or TGV's thin wrists and their constant complaining about how thin their wrists are; "If only it was 28mm it would fit me perfectly!"
Teddy Bulbasaur lmao
Weird...I always hear people complain about the numerals on the Triumph dial when talking about Montas. I happen to like the hour hand.
Likewise, but that’s the stylistic complaint I hear most... In regards to numerous watches, but often with this one.
The blue hue is different from the one from wtheir website (which I prefer). Shame
nice review
but I dont like this watch. it's just does not look right to me personally. I figured what I dont like about this watch the most is the shape of the case.... it's not the flowy elegant with a lot of curvature kind, it's not masculine bold angular type, I dont know. it's just weird, it's like chipping in a bit of everything, cooked up together to form the case.
"xcellent thorough review"
I don't like the bent GMT hand, outside of that great watch.
It’s interesting... Had to be done that way, but I’m a fan. It’s fun/stressful questioning whether it’ll hit the three o’clock hour marker every time it passes, haha.
Nice, but very much a Rolex 1655 homage IMHO....tho I do like it. Cheers 👍👍
Fantastic review, but I totally don't get this watch. It's just below $2k, it has a Sellita (aka knockoff ETA), it's somewhere between boring and ugly, and the details are all so wrong. The font they use for the 24 hour track is particularly blah. What am I missing?
Great video but the watch and brand are garbage!
What exactly do you not like about the brand/watch. I am thinking of picking up a Monta or 2, but am curious if there is anything negative I am missing
Chad Francis Have you ever held one in person?
I wont call it garbage, I only refer fake watches as garbage. i do respect watches that are hard worked, designed and made by a brand of it's own.
but I gotta say it is true that there are quite a lot of things I dont like with this watch.... I cant name them one by one. it's just aesthetically, not pleasing, I wont have it on my wrist I am sorry Monta. I saw someone spoke of how this compares with c ward. personally c ward any trident 3 are much better looking imho. and beat this both on spec and price wise.
