    Hi Kelly,
    Watching you and your husband put this table loom together so clearly, convinced me to take the plunge and buy my own! Although the instruction manual that came with it is very clear, it's sometimes helpful to check a video from someone who's already done it, so thank you both - and for giving me the inspiration to upgrade from my homemade rigid heddle loom. I'd already adapted the latter with heddle rods so that I could weave up to four shafts, but my new eight-shaft loom will open up a whole range of new possibilities which I can't wait to try out!

    Thank you Mr and Mrs Kelly ( smiling). Video was great, informative and useful. My only question is re the 8 shaft 24 inch loom and the back warpstick. The booklet shows 2 sticks and the loop using the shuttle spacer. Your video shoed 1 back warp stick and the spacer. The kit , assuming I use 1 in the front and 1 in the back, leaves me with 3 extra warp sticks.
    Do I need to tie the knot closer then the 10 cm, or ….?
    Thanks again.

    Thank you Kelly. I just bought a 4-harness Ashford table loom which includes a table and 4 treadles. I can't see to find any directions on how to hook up the treadles. if you can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Also, at the end of this video you mention adjusting the texsolv but I don't understand how to do that.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  2 года назад

      Congratulations on your loom!
      I have never used treadles with a table loom, so I can't help you with that. A PDF with setup instructions is available on the Ashford website here (where it says "downloads")- www.ashford.co.nz/products/weaving/product/treadles-for-loom-stand
      You can adjust the height of the shafts by adjusting the texsolv cords they hang from. You use the holes that are in the cords and place a hole over the screw on the inside of the shaft to either make your shafts higher or lower.

    I just finished putting together my new Ashford 8 shaft 24" table loom yesterday and for the most part thought that the instuctions were good, and all of the parts fit together very well, and I was able to do it by myself (although I did go to an electric screwdriver because my hands were getting sore using the manual screwdriver!) But like you, I thought that tying on the rods was the hardest part due to it being "fiddley" like you say, and the instructions could be a little better here explaining where to tie the knots etc. I also had a little trouble with putting on the heddles at first because I thought the rod went through the very top sections and they were all stuck together! But at closer reading of the directions I then saw the correct location of where the rods should go through and got them on correctly (but decided to cut the heddles apart as the directions mentioned might be necessary or desired.) I did run into one problem though that you did not show (maybe 16" doesn't call for this?) but when I was connecting the castle to the frame my directions called to put a washer on the end of the bolt before putting on the plastic knob to tighten the castle in place so it can't collapse. My problem was that the washers supplied did not fit over the bolt - the hole in the washer was maybe 1/32 or something very tiny narrower than the bolt so that it would not go on. So I put the plastic knob on without the washer so I could finish building the loom, and afterwards went to my local hardware store and got two washers with a larger center hole! So not major, but a minor hassle, but otherwise thought that the loom went together pretty easily and my only previous experience putting together any loom was my 16" Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom. Wish I would have seen your video first but still managed to get it together myself - great job on the video! Now waiting for my order of lots of new weaving fiber so I can start warping my first project!

    Thank you, Kelly, for this very helpful video. I only have one problem, and that is at the very end, tying on the warp sticks. Ashford's instructions are very sparse on this. You said to measure 10 cm from the back beam and tie a knot, but I can't tell where on the back beam he is measuring from. It's over an inch wide. Does it make any difference, as long as they are all the same? Also, why do I have so many warp sticks? It looks like there are 5. I have your course and want to get started, but I am confused here.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  2 года назад +1

      Hi Helen, It will become clearer as you work through the course. Don't stress too much about the distance, as you said, consistency is more important. The additional sticks are lease/cross sticks which you will use in the warping process.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  4 года назад +2

      Yep, that's the way to do it. • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  2 года назад

      The main thing is that the shafts don't touch the table (don't set them so low that they do this). I've got a feeling there is a height recommendation in the booklet that comes with the loom? Mine are not entirely level and it's fine as long as the discrepancy between them is not large. I just keep adjusting the cord with the holes until I'm satisfied that they are level enough.

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  3 года назад

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  2 года назад

      The strings come with the loom, so they are pre-measured. You could make your own as well if needed, you would need a strong, not too thick cotton - a tapestry cotton is ideal. I don't remember the length but I'll have a look later when I'm in the studio 😉

I've had my 8 shaft Ashford table loom for years, yet have only used it a couple of times as I get frustrated by not have the weaving tools or the knowledge that I need to put on the warp! My looms are from three different companies -- Ashford, Glimarkra, & Schacht. All are excellent yet different! I realize this is a old video but i had a question i have the 32'' 4 shaft and i warped it today and direct tied on instead of lashing on and found that my warp stick ''bowed'' i realize the loom comes with 5 sticks... are certain ones meant for the front tie on? or is this because i direct tied on and didnt lash on? for reference im doing a weaving with of 14'' out of the 32'' but i do have strings tied on through all the holes of beam to the warp stick. I have been told i could take off the outer 2 threads that are attached from the beam to warp stick but before i do that i just wanted to ask maybe im using the wrong stick ? or maybe i should lash on? ty for any guidance

      This is actually pretty common. The best way I've found to combat it is to use either a metal or wooden dowel rod, slip the end of your warp onto that and then tie that securely onto the back apron bar. It's an extra step, but it does help a lot.

    Hi. This is not related to setting up a loom. Just wanted to know, how long does it take you to hand weave a metre by metre fabric using very fine silk yarn, tightly woven on; 1. A table loom. 2. A floor loom

    • @KellyCasanova
      @KellyCasanova  5 лет назад +1

      That's a very specific question, and unless I sat down and did this to compare the two, I couldn't tell you how long it would take. I can tell you however, that the actual weaving would go much faster on a floor loom 👍

      Do you know roughly how long it would take on a floor loom

      @@ml5684 There are so many variables - the width of the weaving for a start. I actually make a point of not timing myself with any of the weaving process, it helps me to enjoy it and accept that it's going to take as long as it takes. Sorry, I'm no help with that question! 😄

      @@KellyCasanova 🤣👍👍that is true. I agree with you 100+% I will intentionally enjoy the process and weave until I achieve the best I can possibly achieve. No time intended 😊

    Hi there! Thanks for this video, it's super helpful. I'm a super new weaver and have come into possession of a 16 shaft version of this (it was not my choice, it was something my dad got for me). I have a question (for the 16 shaft version of this loom): in the directions, it says to re-adjust the Texsolv so that the front heddle frame hangs about 25 mm or 1 inch below the castle top, and the rear heddle frame hangs about 10mm or 1/2 inch below the castle top. But when I do this, it gets really difficult to move the levers and seems like I'm going to break something-- is it okay if all of the heddle frames hang at the same length from the castle top??

      Congrats on the new loom, wow, 16 shafts, that will keep you busy! 😄 You can absolutely hang them at heights that work for you, the main thing is to not have the bottom of the shafts hitting the table (if your loom is on a table rather than a stand) when they are down (levers are up). Play around with the heights until you have something that feels right. It sounds like your shaft is sticking at the moment, something is too tight or there is not enough space for it to move freely. Let me know if adjusting them fixes the problem!
