Hi, Mike. Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but that mesh part below the pump is not the filter. It's a strainer. The filter is the surrounding of the fuel pump, and separates from the top part where the hoses go in. Cheers.

Got an 04 Echo . I was stuck at Wal mart parking lot. I pulled up the seat, removed the cover and banged on the top of the pump with a Vise Grip to get it started so I wasn't stuck with a towing bill .
If that doesn't work, have someone work the ignition and someone bang the pump at the same time. Should get you on your way:)
    Thanks

Thanks for this video man. Very concise and easy to follow. I've got 3 Yarii' in the UK (two mine, one a family members) and my main one has decided to not start. It cranks but that's it. Narrowing stuff down it looks like this may be the issue (just ordered a Multimeter so I can test a bunch of other stuff before hand). This is the best vid I've seen for changing this pump. Bravo!

At last! I've found a useful video on the replacement of a Toyota Echo/Yaris fuel pump!!! ( the Yaris is basically the same as the Echo but a hatchback here in the UK) This has given me all the information i need to replace the pump. Mine turned out ok and seems to be an electrical supply problem even though I had already checked all the fuses and every relay in the engine bay fuse box. Looking for a dud wire now!

I have already done a lot of work to diagnose a hesitation from a stop in drive. The car is not safe to drive if I can't merge quickly. plugs, coil packs, cleaned throttle body, MAFS cleaning, fuel injectors, radiator, pcv vlave thermostat, air filter, and still have the hesitation. I am thinking fuel pump now, I just don't know.

YES, with minimun maintenance, they last a very long time! (SEE My post about my original with 647k on it. PS, original clutch which was getting a bit "notchy".
Thinking on rebuilding it, engine, front and rear suspension, replace the 5 speed with a slightly different "geared" 2004 to 2006 Scion 5 speed.
If grey market shipping wasn't so $$$ and simple parts hard to get (here), I'd get the complete 1.4 Turbo diesel and trans for it.

Excellent video! My echo fuel pump went at 307k kms. I let it get near empty too many times. I found it was easier and cheaper to put a full used fuel pump assembly in. It was an easy job with the one exception being that one attachment that Mike had difficulty taking off. It's nasty, make sure your screw drivers are very slim so they can get through the opening and put pressure on the side piece. I'll bet Toyota has a special tool for that which allows them to pop it off like nothing. The car died while coming to a stop at a parking lot. I got a friend to fire it over while I banged on the fuel pump assembly under the back seat. It started and ran for about a minute then died again, that's when I knew it was the fuel pump.

    • @edocsil1635
      @edocsil1635 2 года назад +1

For that fuel line, there is a special tool called a fuel line removal tool (something like that) it's just a circular ring that you press in to release the clips

My only worry is given the age of the vehicle, all this plastic will crack/crumble. Makes me want to find a good used, complete assembly, and do all this ahead of time on the bench for a complete swap out at a later date rather than wait for the original to have problems.
Btw, I just had to take a 2001 Echo off the road because of a bad hub and cv axel. Still original pump with 647k miles on it. Deciding to spend up to 1500 rebuilding the engine myself and compkete front and rear suspension. Now I'm driving a slightly beat up 2000 Echo that's hardly broken in with just 146k.(lol)

It’s in that end cap section he removed from the end of the pump.
      (Bottom of the assembly)
      Super easy to get to.
The fuel filter is the big cylinder above the pump in the assembly and should probably also be done at the same time.

The easy possibility could be the fuel line where it connects up top on the engine could have a leak that runs all the way down underneath the car. The more difficult one would be the fuel line itself may have rusted through somewhere. A thorough inspection is in order.

From top to bottom of the assembly it basically goes:
      - plate with connectors
      - fuel filter (big cylinder, 35 ish)
      - fuel pump (narrow cylinder, 75 ish)
      - attached pump strainer (10ish, he incorrectly called it the filter)
      - fuel regulator (15ish), sits inside the “cap” he took off with many snap connectors
      - the cap (No. 2 Fuel Suction Support)
You would want to get a new pump, pump filter, regulator, and pump strainer. About 150 total if you shop around and never need to touch this again.
