The vent under the steering column was even in early 80's Toyota cars in the US. Delco, then a division of GM, was apparently working with NASA to provide cooling for astronauts in the 60's. The research showed that directing heated or cooled fluids to the crotch and the armpits was the most effective way to cool the blood and the body core. GM started putting the crotch vents in their cars, in the '60's, as a result of this.
Yeh, my 93' troopy has that vent though it's a bit bent from being kneed 😂
Have it in a 2006 discovery 3. So great
I do like the 76, watching this made me thing, my 80 series does have electric mirrors, balls cooler, no hubs to lock or unlock, comfortable, not noise at all or rattles. Just maybe the 80 is one to keep as I always think on "upgrading". Nice honest review, thank you!
Mate, I reckon your rig's an absolute ripper; she's a bloody beauty!
Thankyou for all your time and effort in this series mate
All those sceptics about the 2.8 can soak this video up and understand Toyota doesn’t often miss when it comes to their brands. Good to hear it’s proving everyone wrong
The 2.8 is only good in the 150kw version, the 130kw is a slug.
One thing you can admire about Toyota is their constant little improvements on their products. The GD engine has come a long way. I've noticed they're a lot smoother now compared to the earlier ones ('16 Fortuner vs '23 Fortuner). Can't say the same about our brand new Nissan (Terra), that thing has the engine of decades past still behaves the same since the day it was introduced (earlier Navara) lmao
They miss plenty, they’re still trying to work out how to make a reliable dpf and a decent air box.
I've seen other reviews where towing isn't very good with the 2.8, and they were towing GCM for long distances constantly as they would in a labourers job. The extra cylinders and cc's help when doing that type of thing, but it's horses for courses
@@ShoeysAdventures that comment would be relevant if it had the 130kw but it doesn't.
I just hit 15000km in my 76
2.8. Couldn't be happier with it.
500000km in my 2010 V8 76 cruiser and still truck'n....
As a workmate puts it, Tommy Toyota is a smart man.....
I’m constantly impressed with your video editing and the time you take to share your stories.
Put aside the 4wd content of which I love, I appreciate and understand the time it takes to create what you give us.
It is one of my pleasantries of life, sitting down with a coffee on a Sunday morning and tuning in.
Thankyou.
The 2.8l will be a great setup for the "normal" consumer, the guys that overload and use the v8's outside the factory limits will struggle with a 2.8 and having it do the same work and lifespan.
Our hilux 2.8's struggle and often overheat when trying to do the same work as the v8s, I'm sure the new 79's will be the same.
Shame it's coming to an end, time for the yank trucks to show us what they can do.
Great job Ronny
I been enjoying the comparisons and the 2.8 70 series journey. Looking forward to more.
Rig is looking great. Seems like an awesome vehicle, mint review 👌
Another great unbiased video on 2.8, check at 4:28, what’s cavnas? Waiting for next Ineos video as I’m deciding on my retirement ovetlander.
Now that's a car review! Nice work. Not what I thought the outcome would be, but you cannot argue with those facts.
Thanks a million Ronny! Great information for us to digest.
Bull bar looks fantastic. This one is coming along nicely
I can remember in the 80s the turbo diesel automatic Mercedes G wagons was the preferred machine for driving across dessert because of the combination of auto keeping the engine on boost and always in the powerband.
The thing you.mentioned with the maintenance intervals...... Yeah, that isn't something new. If anything it's what we like to call Severe Service and just about everyone meets those conditions due to driving in extreme weather conditions, driving short distances, driving in dusty environments(Arizona for example) or driving Off Road. I wouldn't call it much of a Hack.
That all said I will certainly agree with doing maintenance to keep a vehicle going down the road safely and reliably.
My ‘91 Camry had the nut cooling vent too. Made driving very comfortable.
Thanks. Just ordered the 78. Love the bull bar and want the same.
Good to see mate... you have covered a lot that no-one else has. 👍👍👍👍👍
The seats are different to your Ute and troopy. Dpf model seats are much more comfortable than the older ones, good video and review mate.
Happy to hear your enjoying the new 76 Thanks for taking the time to review. It goes like the v8 should have from the start. a massive improvement in towing and driveability. Finally someone saying that the v8 was lacking. If you are impressed towing with 150kw and 500nm , 523kw and 882nm supercharged ram trx is smiles all round ,What caravan?.... Except for the price. Keep up the good work !
So glad you mentioned that the seats in 2024 comfortable because I’ve been thinking why do people saying they’re so bad when my 2023 Troopy it’s got the most comfortable seats I’ve ever had standard from the factory in New Zealand.
Also brilliant that there was there air cooling to the seat area sick of getting hot bum and never understood heated seats .
I understand off-road the rear track should be wider for better off-road driving but in the past I’ve been involved in building hill climbing racing cars and three wheeler sports cars and they handled extremely well because the rear track was narrower then the front track width.
I wonder if you’ve noticed this between the vehicles you’ve widened the rear track on and your new 76 that on the open road the 76 corners better?
thxs ronny you just fixed my disco 3 e-brake
Bodseys brake bible is your best friend for the EPB.
Ronny, you started sounding like an old man when you said you like the quiet when driving the 2.8lt over the V8 😂😂😂
That’ll be because the LC7x V8s make a nasty awful loud offensive din and are an abomination. The quieter an engine, the better.
you sound like an old man who hates fun@@jerrymyahzcat
@@jerrymyahzcat well that's your opinion. lots of people would disagree
I belief he's right, always so fatigued after a trip in our 76, that background rumble would have attributed to it, along with the wandering steering (white knuckled on arrival), the seats (very uncomfortable) and the infernal ride, yes after the hype wore off the despise moved in.
I do believe the new 2.8 auto would be a far superior vehicle but not swayed enough to go from our GU ZD30 CRC auto we replaced the 76 with. That 76 so turned us off ever contemplating another 70 series product.
But how good does his 76 look?
@@ianweal3081 His 76 doesn’t look very good.
91 FJ80 same vent. I live in the USA. State of Nevada, love the vent year round. Come on over and take a run .
I like it when you said “hey a quieter drive is nicer” I think the same way mate
Hi Ronny. The Toyota Pins for the fuse accessory box should be in a plastic bag in your glove box when you picked it up. I have a '21 Hilux and that's where mine were and where they're meant to be. If they weren't there, go to your dealer and ask for them for free.
I hooked up the relays for my front light bar and air compressor bluetooth adapter to my accessory box so far.
10LT per 100km on my 76 V8 2018 Just love it . (Stock standard) Only a DWIZ track correction. ❤
Something to consider the cable size and volt drop should be taken into account if you’re using your compressor at the rear of your vehicle. Also check the max amps output the compressor will draw. I mounted my Anderson next to the battery.
Great to watch another one of your videos 🤙😀
Would appreciate a growing list of changes/updates/ upgrades as the story progresses. Thanks in any case - great job.
Fantastic honest review. Well done
Ronny, thanks for an even and measured video - the decision between a V8 and the 2.8l auto is a difficult one and I think you have just helped me make my mind up. Much appreciated, keep up the great vids and thoughts.
You guys got some cool rigs in Australia! Just got myself a 23 green rubicon Gladiator. Pretty damn happy with it. Feel you about the power mirrors! I have a 2 door Jeep JK with manual windows and mirrors and it is not convenient lol
If Jeep made the gladiator the same wheelbase as my 2015 Tacoma i’d be driving that. I like the gladiator but in my opinion it’s about 1ft too long for me. Since Toyota doesn’t sell the 70 series Cruiser in the USA I’m getting a Wrangler to compliment my Tacoma…maybe a Grenadier.
I sold my toyota fortuner 2023 gxl to upgrade to lc 300 .. was devastated we enjoyed the 2.8 fortuner that thing get us to places while towing a small camper trailer. While GVM upgrade it not optional for the fortuner we have to let her go as our new 19 foot 6 caravan getting build . Love your car mate definitely have it own personality
How does the LC300 compare to the Fortuner? The Fortuner seems like such a capable car…hard to decide
@retepd1e you can't really compare the lc 300 to the fortuner. Lc300 is more luxury, alot more comfortable, alot more accessories available and can tow alot more than the fortuner .. we took the fortuner across Australia and can't fault anything on the car at all . Very capable on and off road ,fule consumption is amazing. But depend on your budget and what you gonna do with the car, also watch out for the gvm if you going to tow cuz they ain't much left in it after you add accessories.
"It's nice having a quieter drive" - that sounds like the getting of wisdom! Congratulations Ronny!😀Edit: and the handbrake tip is very 'old school - how to park', and for auto or manual. Also release the brake pedal before engaging Park (or first for manuals) if it will hold the vehicle.
My 1991 LJ77 (the pre-prado/76) also had that little vent under the steering column. I called it "ball A/C".
Yep, it's better! Thanks for the video mate.
Putting car from drive to neutral before park would be recommended for every car but people don't know about it
Why?
@@deepshallows He explained in the video just now
@@interceptor7905 ah ok. I missed that part
Simply, it ensures the car is holding on the hand brake and not the transmission
@@JL.765 parking pawl
The second you said that bull bar looks good made me question your judgement 😂
Good to see an honest review, I know you can build a more comfortable / capable vehicle for your $85,000 including customisations, whereas this one starts at $85,000 bare bones, and it still has the inherent problems from 40 years ago, each to their own.
True, but people buy $150000 vehicles and still spend 20 or 50,000g to get em right. Where do you stop.
what 85000k new, comfortable, capable including mods vehicle? serious question.
That's the best looking Bull bar I've seen on the facelift model 😅
@@eliwgreencomfortable? 😂
@@thomjanson9644 I’m asking him to back up his own claim. I never said anything about 70 series being comfortable.
If you want a V8 it'll have be a used one as Toyota have stopped all orders for them. I've just ordered a 2.8 to pull our 3.5 t van. Gotta wait 9-12 months. Ah well I reckon it's worth the wait. Thanks for these videos Ronny, watching them helped me make my decision on a 76 instead of a Y32. Thanks.

I had a crutch cooler in my Chevy Caprice Station Wagon in the 1980’s. Boy, it was so cool it made my privates smaller than I knew it could be. 😂
Just wandering how your back brakes holding up
I drove a v8 towing a trailer for 3 months last year and had to replace them every 15 thousand km and got told told that was common
How do the 76 ones hold up
Awesome content Ronny and thank you. But did you have any issues with the dpf. The fortuner hilux and prado all had this issue.
Is the new bar hoop blocking/restricting any air flow into the engine bar with the gap between the grill top and bonnet.
Hi Ronny , you are right about all new things in this new Land Cruiser but what about DPF ? What was changed with DPF , how works combustion proces any extra switch on dash? Any visible control on dash when in process ,also when DPF in process you can safe to stop the engine or keep running? Thanks.
Thanks for all the great work mate! Comparing to the 79 what would be of significant different to your experience with the 76?
Hi Ronny, did you wrap or paint the front bumper on the 76? Thanks love the channel.
I am a100% with you on the hubs. Absolute pain not to mention having to by a tool I can keep in the door just for this.😠
Love you and love your work mate
I might have missed it but did you regear the diffs when putting the larger tires on ? How about speedometer? Cheers
Looks like it’s going well, so far,,,,
My 100 series has the crotch cooler, very handy.
Good vid,enjoyed it.
DPF, Add Blue?
DPF Regen light on dash?
Do Toyota recommend a long trip of half an hour or more weekly at 80kmhs per hour to initiate a DPF regen burn, if you have been making multiple short trips such as a tradie may do?
Have had this issue with Hyundai iload vans, new DPF unit at 80.000kms and no indicator light to show when you are in a regen burn cycle, diesel in sump lucky not to hydraulic motor.
$6.000 to replace DPF unit.
Hope Toyota on top of this now.
Thank you Ronny nice review. With all the mods...any concerns with the warranty of the vehicle??
@@-WondersofCreation your warranty is only void if the parts you put on are linked to the failure. Example: if you put aftermarket suspension in your IFS and you have issues with your CV joints, you won’t be able to claim this back through warranty
I want the 76 for that mere reason , keep the guys happy down there with that vent😂
Ronnie, how good is this 76 looking, that bar, gorgeous 💋, the proportions with the lift and tyres, the wrap, mate, its looking great.
Aside from that I have a servere disliking for the VDJ76 after owning one, learnt to despise the bloody thing, so fatigued when getting to destinations but I suspect this replacement 2.8 is a vast improvement, however won't be swayed into purchasing another.
Yours is looking so grand though.
Also - where's the best place to put a 2nd battery in a 4-cyl? The old model would take one under the bonnet. Thanks. Regards Shane
New bullbar looking good 👌
love your work Ronnie, appreciate the love for the 70 but I choose comfort and a bit more tech.
Ronny towing a 2.5 tonne hybrid caravan in semi auto mode travelling up a reasonably steep incline out of Foster Victoria and warning for excessive transmission oil temp appeared. Would power haul mode have made any difference?....tia. Warning only remained for 30 seconds until we reached the crest.
Looks like a nice truck like the mods
Just love this rig of yours. Must say never thought that you would actually sell the V8 for the 2.8.. But I guess its each to its own
He is getting older, that's why.
Just wish to get your advice, I’m interested in the long wheel base/2 doors of the same vehicle.
What do you think ?
Hey Ronnie. Wondering if you can comment on this 76 2.8 vs the hilux? Been watching you for a while and wondering what made you keep this over tge 79 and if the same engine as the hilux why you sold the hilux rather then 79?
What brand/model OBDII do you use? I’ve seen one in the background on the dash a couple of times, and you refer to what gear you were in when doing the towing comparo with Harry.
Cheers.
Very good review, thank you. Will be very interested in the 100,000km review. Can you permanently turn off all the silly safety stuff in these new 70 series (lane alerts etc.)? Anyone out there know the answer? Thanks in advance!
My 4.8 GU has auto hubs and i have never bothered using the lock function, just leave in auto. There is a simple mod on the nissans which turns them into manual hubs so you can use low range in 2wd.
Best review on the net
Can you show us how you wire up your driving lights please. And thanks for the content.
My question is about the rear Anderson plug. Living at the coast I find the contacts corrode and that green gunk is a major issue when hooking up my caravan. Is there an elegant solution to prevent this ?
Looking at that bull bar for my 79 but undecided. What was your reason to go with that bull bar
I've noticed that the odometer and the gps don't match in driven distance, which affects my calculated fuel mileage (nissan np300). Any of you guys have the same experience?
love this video, love this car, but...I live in Chile how this lovely car don't come and the costs are really high!
Hi mate, love feedback hi low shifter on the new 76 just recently purchased one myself and I found a vibration through the drive line. Put your hand on hi low shifter and the vibration is really bad. Have you experienced that?
Will you be adding a catch can? Does that affect the warranty?
Cool rig 😍
How much lift and/or cutting did you have to do to fit 35 inch tyres on the 70 series? Also, do you suspect it would be similar in the dual cab version?
Ronni is the 2.8 tuned with exhaust mod yet? Would be interested to see fuel consumption changes
What's your opinion on the 4-cyl being loaded up with 1000kg of gear for a lap of Australia along with the Simpson and Canning SR? Thanks. Regards Shane
Any timing chain clatter noise yet? Happen on cold start after a couple of days. My 22 Hilux has 😢
Some of that stuff has been in the 7p series for quite a while. My 2019 78 gets 12L/100km on 33s all day around town so no real fuel savings.
The big question for me is how does this little engine go in the long run.
Sounds like you’re saying she’s just about perfect 😆. Not in the market for a new vehicle but I’d be down at Toyota sales counter ordering one if I was. I’m hoping I can change over to a hybrid 4wd next time.
A Ball Chiller! Wow!
Not so new; the 1980s Ford Telstar had them. Pretty rad for a 70 series tho’. 😊
WB Statesman's also had these in the front.
Few questions about the new 2.8L engine. Given the new 2.8L in the 79 series dual cab, what is there to really differentiate it from a Hilux? Except for styling and look. Does the hilux give you same engine and reliability but with a more modern interior and comfort? Does this move by Toyota start to make the 70 series utes more redundant?
I’m searching for the technical video covering the Auto/Locking front hubs…. which one is it?
I like the new interior color
I’ve got a question mate. Have you got any experience yet with the new 2024 Land Cruiser Prado? I’ve been interested in it purely because it crosses over into that luxury space, but they seem to have shaped it much closer to the 70 and moved away from the ugly prado shapes from the last decade. I’m a lifelong fan of the 70, and I tow a medium sized boat. But I struggle with it as a daily driver, and always choose my partners vehicle when I’m running around. I’ve been considering that the prado, might finally be the combination of luxury, speedier towing, and decent off road capabilities I’ve actually needed, given I don’t do quite the same level of off roading that you do. Would love to hear your opinions on it so far if you have any.

I have a Jimny with no intention to change it. But when the time comes for my wife to replace her Explorer I will argue in favor of the 76, no doubt. It is obvious one heck of a gods 4x4.
@4:29 🤣 it is indeed a “Cavnas”.
The pins for the acc fuse panel are available from Toyota and same part no as what hilux uses.
Ronnie, it would be nice if you could compare the 2.8 between the 70, hilux and prado. Figure out how the gearing is different, what the advantage has one over the other, etc
But they still have dpf issues and engine dusting issues.
Mate greetings from PNG. I was wondering, since here on our V6 manual version, shifting to H4 on the fly is possible ( to regain control, mostly on loose gravel on speeds exceeding 60km/hr). Is it possible to do this on the 4cyl auto version. I mostly seen videos where the new auto 70 has to stop and put in Neutral before being engaged to H4. Thanks
Good review. Clearly the 2.8 is better than the V8.
Is the 2.8 an advance over it's rivals, such as my 2009 Defender 110 2.4l, also a turbo 4?
Well, the auto would be easier than my 6-speed manual. But I prefer the Defender's rear coils to the 70's leaves at the back, particularly when the 70s rear track is narrower than the front, which is dumb.
Both are utilitarian vehicles. Both have headlight adjustment.
The 2.8 is more powerful, but the 2.4 mostly does OK towing our van, including a recent 56 nights in Tassie.
I think the 70 is overpriced for what you get.
I won't be changing.
Is it possible to replace rear weel track to match the width of the front track?
What’s your opinion
As to why the 70 series didn’t go with v6 300 series engine.
And let’s be real, if the auto box came out in the v8 as an option would you or anyone choose the 2.8? I highly doubt it
The ball cooler is such a needed feature
76 or ineos? What are your thoughts on
