  • Team Hamachi had a magical run to Hawaii. We power reached across the line at 16 kts at 2:21 am Sunday (7/21) morning to complete the 50th Transpac in 8 days 16 hours and 21 minutes, which gives us a corrected time of 8 day 0 hours and 52 minutes.
    It’s been a hell of an adventure and one that will not be repeated anytime soon. We were fortunate to start on the “right day” and the high pressure materialized in a manner that allowed us to power reach the whole way to Hawaii in winds that averaged between 15-20 kts. We never saw winds above 22 kts except for a few minutes, and always between midnight at 2 am to make it more exciting. We couldn’t have asked for a better crew and having one additional crew member became a clear advantage in the heavier wind versus the other J/125s. It’s going to take several days to catch up on sleep and begin to process the magnitude of this adventure and accomplishment. We have really appreciated all the support from our friends, family and Pacific Northwest sailing community.
    Mahalo!
    Team Hamachi

    This is one of the great sailing stories... from your blog I see you started buoy racing just six years ago, and here you are - winning TransPac! Well done guys! Hope you show a video or two at Sloop Tavern once you’re back.

    These j125's would be a chance of winning overall in thhe Sydney to hobart. Most times its down wind all the way to the bottom of Tasmania. Thanks for posting this amazing footage

    Brilliant drone footage. That blue asymmetric looked powerful. I wonder if you adjusted your sailing angle v course to optimise the polars. That was some consistent stable, 'through the wave' speed.

      The big asym is what makes the J/125 a true downwind unicorn!

    This is just the greatest. I am guessing you got the top spin halyard the wrong way around the fractional halyard, and hoisted a guy to get it the right way? Am i right?

    There's a guy climbing the mast under spinnaker _and_ you're filming it with a drone?! You don't back down from a challenge, do you? 😁

      All aerial footage was taken by the Hamachi crew using a Mavic air drone in the middle of the Pacific. Most of it is from our half way party 1250 nm from hawaii.

    Also... it’s just stunning how barebones J boats are... you pay like 300 grand for the sheer performance, but you still have to bring your own camping burner...

    • @jason_andrews
      @jason_andrews  5 лет назад +6

      The J/125 is not your normal J/boat. Its a stripped down racing sled and most have been modified to make them lighter. For example, the boat originally came with a two burner stove.

    what is the speed at 2:54?

    • @jason_andrews
      @jason_andrews  3 года назад

      Somewhere between 17-20 kts. That was typical high end surfing speed that was repeated over and over for five days.
