It seems strange that the clutch would suddenly slip now. For the bonnet, I used to use Gaffa tape, the best racing toolbox accessory going.

I know the feeling Dave, I suffer with "inertia" myself. My advice would be to try and remove everything that you can before painting. Having it sprayed will give the best result but does mean masking the whole car.

Pleased to say the car came back in one piece, but the clutch is slipping, gearbox needs looking at and I need to try and get the bonnet to stay down!

You could install a clear bra to protect from stone chips
In the time you fixed that I’ve literally just stared at my empty engine bay and scratched my head at how I’m going to tackle painting the area.
