I think the biggest difference is our opinions on Lady Tremaine. I find her to be frustrating and unsatisfying. Her lack of vanquishing ability is fine, but the glass slipper mechanic with the cane is so annoying because you rely on a single card to free up actions in two spaces, and its an activate card at that. Then theres the ball gown and regular daughter variants. If you get a ball gown variant early, u have to hold until the matching daughter comes out, which is too inconsistent.. Then of course is the multiple steps to actually make the wedding happen. Respect your opinion tho, you prob just know how to play her better
I highly disagree with Lady Tremaine. I think she is one of the toughest characters in the game. Bottom 5. She has only won one game in my experience playing as or against her and that was against scar where I forced him into a hakuna matata cyclone. I'm surprised how high she is on both of your lists

Def disagree but that’s the fun! Yeah I think she is brimming with theme and incredibly fun to play. However I was a playtester so I’ve played hundreds of games with her against every villain. Lots of time to practice.
I love playing Mother Gothel BECAUSE she’s so complicated and you hardly ever win, but when you do…. Oh it’s so sweet! Disney Villianous basically kept me and my husband going throughout lockdown, and probably I’m a bit more strategic and good at these games than he is, and I didn’t want to win all the time because then he wouldn’t want to play, so playing Mama G meant that he had a much better chance of beating me. It was like a golf handicap, so I recommend her if you like a challenge and know you’re playing someone who’s less good at the game than you - like someone much younger. Or my husband.
I agree she is complicated but my roommate, on the other hand, has never lost with her. She doesn’t play with us super often but her Gothel is superb. Maybe that just means I’m not as good as I thought though. Ha!
i played with her four times and didnt win with her until the last time. and each time, i was so close. i literally just had to start my turn. and i would have 11 or 12 trust so if i did get faithed before my next turn, i still had enough. but because she's a "start you turn with..." character, every time, someone beat me to the punch. i was so happy when i finally won.
I've always thought there was something beautiful about the choices the designers made for The Queen of Hearts. Like every villain has some dastardly scheme like kill someone, skin puppies, increase taxes, take over some place... but here's little Queenie, and she wants to win her game of Croquet, in fact her character is villainous all the way around except for this one happy goal. I find this both hilarious and mad, and that's exactly how I play her.
I love villainous. Even though the villains aren’t perfectly balanced, that’s actually what makes the game fun. The game organically balances out if you’re playing with more than two players because people will fate the stronger villains more.
I love that you ranked both the strongest and your personal faves! It really goes to show that there is a villain in this game for just about any player. My personal fave is Jafar, I think he's wonerfully thematic and if you're able to win with him you certainly feel like a Machiavellian genius!
Love to see you finally did a ranking! I think it'd be cool to see you rank them thematically next! Personally, I would put Gaston as the lowest thematically, it doesn't feel like there's any connection between the movie and what you're doing with the character. Glad that most of my favorites are high on your list though, Dr. Facilier, Evil Queen, Ratigan, Queen of Hearts. I've also got Pete and Lady Tremaine up there.
Great list! I think that Ratigan is the best designed character in the game, thematically and mechanically he just clicks in a way I don't feel like any other character does. Even if he isn't people's favorite I do feel like from a game design angle Ratigan just functions the best. Love the Ursula hype! Even with other characters with their other gimmicks I think she's probably the weirdest character design in the game, and being in the base set is impressive they came up with it. I think she would be better if she had a play card action at the Palace but I like seeing the new take on Ursula
I absolutely love Ratigan. He is my favorite Disney villain and I win all the time with him. In my opinion he's the easiest villain to win with, except maybe Pete, who I win with all the time but all of my siblings have never won with him. One of the greatest board games OF ALL TIME! as a HUGE great mouse detective, i was sold so hard on villainous by ratigan, since he's my favorite villain period, and he is perfectly designed in terms of the film. literally down to the time on the clock on the back of the card being when he's defeated. i knew i was in love with this game when i played him and saw how the company so clearly loved these characters, especially the cult ones like prince john and ratigan.

I honestly love this game so much and am glad this channel exists. It’s so crazy how each character plays soooo differently and how it matches with their story/theme so well. It’s a very original game. Never played anything like it. Personally for me Yzma is soooo fun even though it can be so frustrating when Kuzco gets shuffled back in. It’s very unique and fun - chance wise. I also love how Kronk is so strong and can easily vanquish without dying; it’s what keeps me coming back, idk why I like that mechanic so much lol. I can’t wait for the new expansion. My brother and I have pretty much tried every character aside from the Gaston expansion as that one is harder to find in Canada/more expensive. Ive suggested to him that we should change some balancing to make it fairer, like whenever I play Mother Gothel it takes so long to win and it’s impossible to win especially when others fate you. I want to change her win condition to be 8 trust at the start of the turn instead of 10 but he refuses (thematically her gameplay matches so well even though I hate it sometimes it’s still fun). Anyway, you should totally do some gameplay videos if you’d ever be down. I’d love to just watch you play a game out with anyone. Just a top down view so we can see everything but that might be cumbersome. Also, I agree with a lot of your list and keep up the great content! Your guides are always very helpful!

Glad to see my boy Ratigan so high on the power rankings. I love how if you set it up right you can put your opponents in a catch-22 situation where they find or move Basil to destroy the queen the turn before you win you can just swoop in and vanquish him with Felicia for the victory. Ofc this requires time to set up but I find it's pretty easy to fly under the radar in a 3+ player game as Ratigan since how close you are to winning isn't open information, aside from the amount of power, gears, etc. you have, which isn't a guarantee that you even have the queen in hand in the first place. (My friend who's played Facilier - I haven't yet - cites him as being good for a similar reason - how close you are to winning isn't open knowledge) The Horned King is my other favorite but I'd generally agree with him being middle of the pack from what I've seen. Not the fastest, and while much of his fate deck is pretty mild the cards that mess you up can really mess you up. Yzma is next on my list of villains to play. I only got the game last month so it's mostly just been me trying to git gud at Ratigan since I know I like his playstyle.

@@LordoftheBoard I have to say even though you have Hades below your list I still love him a lot I have won with him 3 times and a couple of times I have won with 4 Titans at Olympus and he is in my number 2. My top 5 is 1. Jafar 2. Hades 3. Pete 4. Ratigan and 5. Syndrome.
My favorite character in the game is Pete because he has my three favorite things for a card game: great artwork, random objectives that changes how I play every game, and cards that synergies well with each other. It’s super satisfying playing card combos and it feels like there is always 10 different decisions I can make each turn,

This was a very interesting video! I have been wondering for a while on your personal preferences and there were some that I agreed and some that I didn’t. (Seeing my boi Hades was just, oof 😅) I love Pete for the uniqueness he brings to each game and Gaston is such a puzzle of planning that I love to play. This is a great concept for a video. I like the power ranking along with your favorites to play. I only have the base game. When playing with my grandkids they always take Hook & Jafar first. I usually have to choose btwn. Queen of Hearts, Maleficent, and Ursula. QoH is just too easy and uninteresting. M is unappealing so I take Ursula unless Prince John is available. From your Tips videos I am most interested in Pete and think he would be my favorite. Thanks for all the great Villainous and Root content!

My personal favs are Jafar, I like the challenge of his game Pete (LOVED the black and white cartoons plus just he's fun to me), Evil Queen LOVE that movie and story so much fun with her and my all time favorite in the game is Ratigan I saw the movie and wanted the game he's so much fun in anything hehe least favorite to play Ursula she gives me a headache lol Thanks for all the Villainous love and tips Sam! =)
I've been looking for this all week, thank you for making it. Villainous is my favorite board game of all time. My play group generally would put Ursula as the weakest with Hades close after. When I have to teach new players how to play, I play Ursula to guarantee that I will lose, lol. We also think Dr. Facilier is the strongest and I have personally been on the receiving end of a turn 3 win by my opponent with him. What villains would you like to see in the next expansion Sam? I have my fingers crossed for Madam Mim.
I agree with some of your thoughts and disagree with others, but overall this is a great breakdown and you have made me rethink my opinions on pretty much all of these villains, particularly Ursula and Jafar. You have also earned my subscription; not much of a prize I know, but it is what I have to give!

I think your power rankings are pretty much spot on. While I might change around a few just 1 or 2 spots, the only one I really would change the most is Prince John. I would consider him around 7-9th position... he's slower, but that reliability when many others in the middle can have their day truly messed up puts him higher to me. Your personal rankings are completely different but that's cool LOL. I'm a huge fan of Pete, can't get enough. I adore Mother Gothel's gameplay. And maybe Gaston takes 3rd for me. It really depends on personal playstyles, and those really do it for me! One reason why I love this game so much is that everybody has a *different* take on who the best designed character in the game is, thematically and mechanically speaking. Also, I need to find those power/lock token accessories now!!
I'm glad to hear someone else agrees with how weak Queen of Hearts fate deck is!!! I'd have Cruella further up in terms of power as whenever she's in play her engine gets assembled very quickly! I do agree she's quite too strong, with very little challenge. I think I would get her a house rule to maybe reinforce her fate deck.... Like if Alice is in play, she cannot attempt her royal strike! Thumbs up for your channel! Super nice content! It helped me a lot to think about strategies and which expansion to go for!

She sounds like she’d be a good, basic, beginner friendly character. Get Penny, then attach a diamond to her then move both cards to a specific location.
Intriguing rankings, here! I agree that Facilier definitely packs the most power overall, and I actually have been hesitant to play as him in the past due to how easily his wins can come but I really enjoy his art and dynamic!
Terrific video. Fantastic game system. I love RPGs but my wife will never play, however she loves to play Villanous, which has become my sneaky “villainous” way of getting her to RPG with me - mwu ha ha ha! She almost always play Evil Queen, while I have played nearly every other. My Top 3 are Hook, Facilier, Hades… and now I know why I never seem to win with Hades! That said, I always have fun no matter which villain I play. Thank you so much for this video.

Its so facinating how different my list would be. Yes Hades is harder but he's one of my top, along with Mother Gothel and Prince John (who I believe are pretty easy/lots of strategy opportunities). Lady Tremaine is extremely hard way to many steps and can be so easily derailed. Horned King just has a super weird design. I will agree with Dr. Facilier is def at the top.

I've seen Yzma win quite a bit with varying player counts, and that's with the extra limitation of Kronk needing the dagger rather than just Guards. I also think Cruella's engine gets off the ground a lot faster than people give her credit for, giving you lots of actions in a turn, but have mostly just seen her in two player games against other complicated characters.
I love your take on all these characters. I'd love to make a video or even do a podcast with you sometime about the Disney Villains that have yet to be covered, and how they could work in the format of this game! Also, where did you get those awesome looking tokens?
What Villains would you like to see in the next expansion? I want to see Oogie Boogie, Gantu (Lilo & Stitch), Shere Khan (Jungle Book), or Shan Yu (Mulan).
I really want Oogie Boogie too. But my most wanted is someone from from Pirates. Either Barbossa or Davy Jones. I know it's live action, but they could make it work.
Scar is my favorite to play and yeah if Mufasa is near the bottom of the gate deck it takes a while to get there. Gathering power and discarding your hand is pretty strong while you wait for that play though.
I love the artwork in this game (I love Disney). I’ve only played once though and didn’t like it because it overstayed its welcome. But I really liked how all the villains were different and thematic! I was Ursula and won, so I’m now proud of that since she ranks lower on your power scale!

As someone who's first main was Queen of Hearts, I was shocked at first that you personally ranked her #18....but it was a sad moment when I thought about it and actually agreed with you 😅 Its no wonder Ive been playing other characters more.
The villain that is my favorite to play is Mother Gothel, mostly bc she's my favorite disney villain. But, I find myself mostly winning with are Facilier and Ratigan. Gaston, Lady Tremaine and Horned King I still haven't played enough to really judge.
This is why I love villainous because if you invest the time any villain becomes viable. I’ve been heavily practising and optimising Scar recently after getting hammered by Hook in my first game as him. Now I’m scary whenever I play him having decimated Facilier, Gothel, Maleficent and Evil Queen in my last 4 games (Evil Queen I beat before she’d even unlocked the dwarves cottage). Have to agree with you on Queen and Tremaine they’re great fun- I personally don’t like Cruella, Yzma or Gaston. Great video as well I’ve watched it about 4 times now
Hades is definitely a challenge especially because you have to forfeit moves to fate your opponent to slow them down while you work on getting your titans across the board after being fated a million times 1v1. The chariot hydra and Payne helps a ton.

love your channel. We've been obsessively playing 1v1 lately. (great way to learn all the decks) - would love to hear your take (maybe a video) on different strategies between "1v1" vs "multiplayer. - We are noticing that "whoever out-FATES the other player" has a very strong advantage in 1v1. Have you noticed the same? - Curious if "aggressively rushing towards your goal and ignoring fates / heroes" is more prevalent in "multiplayer" because of the "group politics" element Thank you for your content and passion!
Love this concept - I would have to think about differences. But I essentially describe it as 2 player villainous is like playing your villain at their worst - being fated a lot. So the main differences is avoiding and mitigated fates. Whereas most multiplayer games are more of a race
From hanging around the discord and thinking with some ways they do, the trick is balancing fates and progressing in your own objective. If you use up your turn to fate without it meaningfully helping your objective, you at best go even with them having a dead turn, but at worst you get a weak fate... Or even a dead fate and only hurt yourself.
Definitely agree on Dr. Facilier. Same with Hades. You’ve got these characters pretty spot on! Of course everything depends on how many characters you’re up against and which villain you’re against, but overall this pretty accurate.

Yzma is a solid middle rank for me. Okay to play, and I like setting up Kronk to defeat Tipo and Chaca and then Kuzco without a ton of moving. My favorite to play are Jafar and Pete. I love setting up Pete's long game, and I love hypnotizing the super powerful heroes like Carpet, Abu, Aladdin. I love Maleficent but hate her fate deck. I'd love to see a video from you on the worst fate decks and strategies to overcome it. I dislike playing Scar or Cruella-their fate decks are brutal and as you mentioned, it takes a long time to get only partway to your goal. Not a big fan of Mother Gothel either. It is so stressful to constantly prepping to defeat Rapunzel. I do win quite a bit with her, often quickly but that is when I get the hairbrush out early.
Two requests/questions: 1) could you please do a villainous series over how to play against the different characters? Knowing when to use the fate action and cards that can be used against your opponents could be useful. 2) have you ever looked at the homebrew scene for Villainous? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
I like some Fan created content. Most I do not like. But im picky. I think often time they are overally complex and I just don't see villainous needing that complexity. However I have made a few of my own for fun! darth vader has been a hit! I wish I had the time to do videos against. but that is immediately signing up for around 18 more videos.
Great video. Although, i think some characters need a little change or addons in their fate decks. For example: 1. Prince John, he needs at least 1 fate card that takes away 3-4 power permanently. 2. Captain Hook, he is done really good, and only thing missing on his fate deck is either Tiger Lili or Indians card. 3. Rattigan, killing Basil is too easy, so it is always smarter not to destroy Robot Queen, but instead always go for Airship. Rattigans cat is way overpowered, so maybe Tobey should have ability to destroy an ally when played. 4. Yzma, there should be only one Right Hand Man card, it is way too easy to find Kronk or bring him back from Heroes status. 5. Queen of Hearts, more brutal fate deck overall. 6. Lady Tremaine, they definitely need to make Lucifer a bit more useful. 7. Jaffar, they should have made Genie have some stronger effect. You are doing great work, it would be great if you could make video about what would you change in some fate decks or what future Disney Villains you would love to see.
1: Maybe something to try is have the ones that steal power then discard it over time, so you have to get it back asap? 3: Honestly, I think that Basil being easier is fine, as that objective is meant as a backup so losing the Robot Queen isn't basically a Game Over, you're still in the endgame, just have to make a change of plans. If anything, I'd say just like... Add 1 strength so you can't just use the cat to solo him... Or add a "needs 2 allies to kill" passive if anything?

With Basil, biggest problem is when there is Robot Queen and Flying ship at same time, and that is usually very often, and Basil card comes up, it is always better to discard Ship, and leave the Queen, because for queen, it needs at least 3-4 more turns to finish. And if we discard Queen, Rattigan player can end game literally next turn very easily. The point is, it would be fun to make killing Basil just little bit more difficult. And of course, make Toby immune to Cat, just for thematic sake.
I almost completely agree with your power list but for me my main is Scar. I just love winning with lion boi. One of my fave disney villains too. We don't 1v1 so having targets who aren't me helps. Frankly I don't think this game functions very well as a 1v1 since the group fates are supposed to reign in the big bois. Great vid!
Favorite has to be Pete, the fact he has so much Replayability with having so many varying combinations of where the goals can be just makes me love his play style. Least favorite would probably maybe be Gaston or Mother Gothel some of their fates are super harsh, even though I love the characters and their aesthetic. As for Yzma I also like her for how much is going on, with trying to find Kuzco in the unique fate deck set up, or controlling Kronk, Yzma is certainly high up on my characters that I’d play
ive been played with yzma lately (im going through characters, previously maining ratigan) and she is so, so much fun to play. the thing ive run up against with other players is that both times ive played with others someone else beat my by a turn or two.
never played the game, but found the video really enjoyable. Do Root next. Maybe after the final versions of the Marauders get released, taking some of the buffs that the new set up cards gave to some of the factions

Great video! I definitely agree with spots 1 and 18. However I do think that maleficent is a little to high because of her struggles with getting power.
So I’ve had only started to play and the first three villains I’ve played was Mother Gothel, Cruella and then Hades. Of course I didn’t win, and it did feel like for them, it’s a lot of setting up things on the board and having a proactive gameplan. But they ultimately land on maybe 5 or so cards in their decks to actually close a game. I do have to say Hades seems to be the most Fate-resilient of the three I’ve played. And I really like MG’s variety in realm management.
I haven't played every villain in Villainous but I played the Evil Queen probably half a dozen times already because she's so much fun. I only lost once with her. She's definitely my favorite.
Here's a thought. I would love a standalone expansion for the Disney Afternoon featuring: - Magica De Spell from "Ducktales" - Don Karnage from "Talespin" - Fat Cat from "Chip n Dale Rescue Rangers" - NegaDuck from "Darkwing Duck"

We are still missing the latest two extensions, so I can only speak for the base game plus the first - but for us Prince John is always the character we avoid unless we have a child playing with us, because we don't like that he's so easy to play and that he is basically a 20-round-timer. XD I personally love Hades, Dr. Facilier and Dschafar and my mother enjoyes the Red Queen a lot (which I don't understand, but hey~).
The agree with your power list a lot. Captain Hook should be just a wee-bit lower on power for me. However, Captain Hook is my #5 FAVORITE character to play! My other favorites are... #4. Cruella DeVil #3. Horned King #2. Scar #1. Pete I also bought the LOTB Tee! Can’t wait for it to get here! Looks super comfy!

Same. I just got the Syndrome expansion and at least both Lotso and Madame Mim seem pretty straight forward. Syndrome on the other hand.... Sheesh, what a pain in the butt.

Evil Queen is also my favourite character for all the reasons that you mantioned. Purple is my favourite colour and I recommend you to watch Once Upon a Time. She's just amazing! 💜
I agree with most of what you say, except for Maleficent being my own personal favorite. I do get the "just play cards" thing but I feel like knowing which, where and when to play them is the key so def requires planning and scheming... Besides you can get fated from having all four curses to just one in that "waiting" turn.
Honestly, Maleficent is one of the easiest villains to win with in my opinion. I was playing against three other people, none of which were any bad at the game, and I came to a point where I could have won within 15 minutes. However, I purposefully decided not to so that we could have some more fun, though I still won in the end.

I think the biggest difference is our opinions on Lady Tremaine. I find her to be frustrating and unsatisfying. Her lack of vanquishing ability is fine, but the glass slipper mechanic with the cane is so annoying because you rely on a single card to free up actions in two spaces, and its an activate card at that. Then theres the ball gown and regular daughter variants. If you get a ball gown variant early, u have to hold until the matching daughter comes out, which is too inconsistent.. Then of course is the multiple steps to actually make the wedding happen. Respect your opinion tho, you prob just know how to play her better
I highly disagree with Lady Tremaine. I think she is one of the toughest characters in the game. Bottom 5. She has only won one game in my experience playing as or against her and that was against scar where I forced him into a hakuna matata cyclone. I'm surprised how high she is on both of your lists
Interesting! Yeah I win with her a lot. It may have helped that I was a playtester and played HUNDREDS of games as all despicable plots characters against every villain
Def disagree but that’s the fun! Yeah I think she is brimming with theme and incredibly fun to play. However I was a playtester so I’ve played hundreds of games with her against every villain. Lots of time to practice.
To be fair, I played her three times yesterday and won twice, so maybe I was just playing her wrong before? Lol
I love playing Mother Gothel BECAUSE she’s so complicated and you hardly ever win, but when you do…. Oh it’s so sweet! Disney Villianous basically kept me and my husband going throughout lockdown, and probably I’m a bit more strategic and good at these games than he is, and I didn’t want to win all the time because then he wouldn’t want to play, so playing Mama G meant that he had a much better chance of beating me. It was like a golf handicap, so I recommend her if you like a challenge and know you’re playing someone who’s less good at the game than you - like someone much younger. Or my husband.
I agree she is complicated but my roommate, on the other hand, has never lost with her. She doesn’t play with us super often but her Gothel is superb. Maybe that just means I’m not as good as I thought though. Ha!
i played with her four times and didnt win with her until the last time. and each time, i was so close. i literally just had to start my turn. and i would have 11 or 12 trust so if i did get faithed before my next turn, i still had enough. but because she's a "start you turn with..." character, every time, someone beat me to the punch. i was so happy when i finally won.
Exactly why I play hard characters. Victory feels great. And it makes the game more fun.

I've always thought there was something beautiful about the choices the designers made for The Queen of Hearts.
Like every villain has some dastardly scheme like kill someone, skin puppies, increase taxes, take over some place... but here's little Queenie, and she wants to win her game of Croquet, in fact her character is villainous all the way around except for this one happy goal.
I find this both hilarious and mad, and that's exactly how I play her.
She is a well designed character i must admit!
I love villainous. Even though the villains aren’t perfectly balanced, that’s actually what makes the game fun. The game organically balances out if you’re playing with more than two players because people will fate the stronger villains more.
I love that it isn't balanced because I can play with my daughters or newbies and not destroy them
That’s really a sign of bad design. You should win due to skill, not because you’re playing a poorly designed character.
The most important thing in an asymmetric game is balance. An impossible goal. But it should still be the priority.
I love that you ranked both the strongest and your personal faves! It really goes to show that there is a villain in this game for just about any player. My personal fave is Jafar, I think he's wonerfully thematic and if you're able to win with him you certainly feel like a Machiavellian genius!

Personally, I would put Gaston as the lowest thematically, it doesn't feel like there's any connection between the movie and what you're doing with the character.
Glad that most of my favorites are high on your list though, Dr. Facilier, Evil Queen, Ratigan, Queen of Hearts. I've also got Pete and Lady Tremaine up there.

I think that Ratigan is the best designed character in the game, thematically and mechanically he just clicks in a way I don't feel like any other character does. Even if he isn't people's favorite I do feel like from a game design angle Ratigan just functions the best.
Love the Ursula hype! Even with other characters with their other gimmicks I think she's probably the weirdest character design in the game, and being in the base set is impressive they came up with it. I think she would be better if she had a play card action at the Palace but I like seeing the new take on Ursula

In my opinion he's the easiest villain to win with, except maybe Pete, who I win with all the time but all of my siblings have never won with him. One of the greatest board games OF ALL TIME! as a HUGE great mouse detective, i was sold so hard on villainous by ratigan, since he's my favorite villain period, and he is perfectly designed in terms of the film. literally down to the time on the clock on the back of the card being when he's defeated. i knew i was in love with this game when i played him and saw how the company so clearly loved these characters, especially the cult ones like prince john and ratigan.

I honestly love this game so much and am glad this channel exists. It’s so crazy how each character plays soooo differently and how it matches with their story/theme so well. It’s a very original game. Never played anything like it.
Personally for me Yzma is soooo fun even though it can be so frustrating when Kuzco gets shuffled back in. It’s very unique and fun - chance wise. I also love how Kronk is so strong and can easily vanquish without dying; it’s what keeps me coming back, idk why I like that mechanic so much lol.
I can’t wait for the new expansion. My brother and I have pretty much tried every character aside from the Gaston expansion as that one is harder to find in Canada/more expensive. Ive suggested to him that we should change some balancing to make it fairer, like whenever I play Mother Gothel it takes so long to win and it’s impossible to win especially when others fate you. I want to change her win condition to be 8 trust at the start of the turn instead of 10 but he refuses (thematically her gameplay matches so well even though I hate it sometimes it’s still fun).
Anyway, you should totally do some gameplay videos if you’d ever be down. I’d love to just watch you play a game out with anyone. Just a top down view so we can see everything but that might be cumbersome.

Glad to see my boy Ratigan so high on the power rankings. I love how if you set it up right you can put your opponents in a catch-22 situation where they find or move Basil to destroy the queen the turn before you win you can just swoop in and vanquish him with Felicia for the victory. Ofc this requires time to set up but I find it's pretty easy to fly under the radar in a 3+ player game as Ratigan since how close you are to winning isn't open information, aside from the amount of power, gears, etc. you have, which isn't a guarantee that you even have the queen in hand in the first place. (My friend who's played Facilier - I haven't yet - cites him as being good for a similar reason - how close you are to winning isn't open knowledge)
The Horned King is my other favorite but I'd generally agree with him being middle of the pack from what I've seen. Not the fastest, and while much of his fate deck is pretty mild the cards that mess you up can really mess you up.
Yzma is next on my list of villains to play. I only got the game last month so it's mostly just been me trying to git gud at Ratigan since I know I like his playstyle.

My favorite character in the game is Pete because he has my three favorite things for a card game: great artwork, random objectives that changes how I play every game, and cards that synergies well with each other. It’s super satisfying playing card combos and it feels like there is always 10 different decisions I can make each turn,

This is a great concept for a video. I like the power ranking along with your favorites to play. I only have the base game. When playing with my grandkids they always take Hook & Jafar first. I usually have to choose btwn. Queen of Hearts, Maleficent, and Ursula. QoH is just too easy and uninteresting. M is unappealing so I take Ursula unless Prince John is available. From your Tips videos I am most interested in Pete and think he would be my favorite. Thanks for all the great Villainous and Root content!

I've been looking for this all week, thank you for making it. Villainous is my favorite board game of all time. My play group generally would put Ursula as the weakest with Hades close after. When I have to teach new players how to play, I play Ursula to guarantee that I will lose, lol. We also think Dr. Facilier is the strongest and I have personally been on the receiving end of a turn 3 win by my opponent with him.
What villains would you like to see in the next expansion Sam? I have my fingers crossed for Madam Mim.

I think your power rankings are pretty much spot on. While I might change around a few just 1 or 2 spots, the only one I really would change the most is Prince John. I would consider him around 7-9th position... he's slower, but that reliability when many others in the middle can have their day truly messed up puts him higher to me.
Your personal rankings are completely different but that's cool LOL. I'm a huge fan of Pete, can't get enough. I adore Mother Gothel's gameplay. And maybe Gaston takes 3rd for me. It really depends on personal playstyles, and those really do it for me!
One reason why I love this game so much is that everybody has a *different* take on who the best designed character in the game is, thematically and mechanically speaking.

I love playing all the vilains except Queen of Hearts. I do agree she's quite too strong, with very little challenge. I think I would get her a house rule to maybe reinforce her fate deck.... Like if Alice is in play, she cannot attempt her royal strike!

I love RPGs but my wife will never play, however she loves to play Villanous, which has become my sneaky “villainous” way of getting her to RPG with me - mwu ha ha ha!
She almost always play Evil Queen, while I have played nearly every other. My Top 3 are Hook, Facilier, Hades… and now I know why I never seem to win with Hades!
That said, I always have fun no matter which villain I play.

Its so facinating how different my list would be. Yes Hades is harder but he's one of my top, along with Mother Gothel and Prince John (who I believe are pretty easy/lots of strategy opportunities). Lady Tremaine is extremely hard way to many steps and can be so easily derailed. Horned King just has a super weird design. I will agree with Dr. Facilier is def at the top.

I've seen Yzma win quite a bit with varying player counts, and that's with the extra limitation of Kronk needing the dagger rather than just Guards.
I also think Cruella's engine gets off the ground a lot faster than people give her credit for, giving you lots of actions in a turn, but have mostly just seen her in two player games against other complicated characters.
She is interesting to say the least 😄

What Villains would you like to see in the next expansion? I want to see Oogie Boogie, Gantu (Lilo & Stitch), Shere Khan (Jungle Book), or Shan Yu (Mulan).
I really want Oogie Boogie too. But my most wanted is someone from from Pirates. Either Barbossa or Davy Jones. I know it's live action, but they could make it work.
They just released Oogie Boogie and Shere Khan recently.
Scar is my favorite to play and yeah if Mufasa is near the bottom of the gate deck it takes a while to get there. Gathering power and discarding your hand is pretty strong while you wait for that play though.
I love playing with Cruella, it does take some time to set up, but totally worth it.

I love the artwork in this game (I love Disney). I’ve only played once though and didn’t like it because it overstayed its welcome. But I really liked how all the villains were different and thematic! I was Ursula and won, so I’m now proud of that since she ranks lower on your power scale!

As someone who's first main was Queen of Hearts, I was shocked at first that you personally ranked her #18....but it was a sad moment when I thought about it and actually agreed with you 😅 Its no wonder Ive been playing other characters more.
The villain that is my favorite to play is Mother Gothel, mostly bc she's my favorite disney villain. But, I find myself mostly winning with are Facilier and Ratigan. Gaston, Lady Tremaine and Horned King I still haven't played enough to really judge.

This is why I love villainous because if you invest the time any villain becomes viable. I’ve been heavily practising and optimising Scar recently after getting hammered by Hook in my first game as him. Now I’m scary whenever I play him having decimated Facilier, Gothel, Maleficent and Evil Queen in my last 4 games (Evil Queen I beat before she’d even unlocked the dwarves cottage). Have to agree with you on Queen and Tremaine they’re great fun- I personally don’t like Cruella, Yzma or Gaston. Great video as well I’ve watched it about 4 times now

Hades is definitely a challenge especially because you have to forfeit moves to fate your opponent to slow them down while you work on getting your titans across the board after being fated a million times 1v1. The chariot hydra and Payne helps a ton.

- would love to hear your take (maybe a video) on different strategies between "1v1" vs "multiplayer.
- We are noticing that "whoever out-FATES the other player" has a very strong advantage in 1v1. Have you noticed the same?
- Curious if "aggressively rushing towards your goal and ignoring fates / heroes" is more prevalent in "multiplayer" because of the "group politics" element

Love this concept - I would have to think about differences. But I essentially describe it as 2 player villainous is like playing your villain at their worst - being fated a lot. So the main differences is avoiding and mitigated fates. Whereas most multiplayer games are more of a race
From hanging around the discord and thinking with some ways they do, the trick is balancing fates and progressing in your own objective. If you use up your turn to fate without it meaningfully helping your objective, you at best go even with them having a dead turn, but at worst you get a weak fate... Or even a dead fate and only hurt yourself.
Definitely agree on Dr. Facilier. Same with Hades. You’ve got these characters pretty spot on! Of course everything depends on how many characters you’re up against and which villain you’re against, but overall this pretty accurate.
I would agree. It all depends who’s playing up against who as well! Yeah I have so many games of villainous under my belt now it was pretty easy to pick out! :)
Yzma is a solid middle rank for me. Okay to play, and I like setting up Kronk to defeat Tipo and Chaca and then Kuzco without a ton of moving. My favorite to play are Jafar and Pete. I love setting up Pete's long game, and I love hypnotizing the super powerful heroes like Carpet, Abu, Aladdin. I love Maleficent but hate her fate deck. I'd love to see a video from you on the worst fate decks and strategies to overcome it. I dislike playing Scar or Cruella-their fate decks are brutal and as you mentioned, it takes a long time to get only partway to your goal. Not a big fan of Mother Gothel either. It is so stressful to constantly prepping to defeat Rapunzel. I do win quite a bit with her, often quickly but that is when I get the hairbrush out early.

Two requests/questions:
1) could you please do a villainous series over how to play against the different characters? Knowing when to use the fate action and cards that can be used against your opponents could be useful.
2) have you ever looked at the homebrew scene for Villainous? If so, what are your thoughts on it?
I like some Fan created content. Most I do not like. But im picky. I think often time they are overally complex and I just don't see villainous needing that complexity. However I have made a few of my own for fun! darth vader has been a hit!
I wish I had the time to do videos against. but that is immediately signing up for around 18 more videos.
IMO Yzma is the most fun character in the game to play. it REALLY feels like you are looking for kusco, and it makes you have a very fun experience

1. Prince John, he needs at least 1 fate card that takes away 3-4 power permanently.
2. Captain Hook, he is done really good, and only thing missing on his fate deck is either Tiger Lili or Indians card.
3. Rattigan, killing Basil is too easy, so it is always smarter not to destroy Robot Queen, but instead always go for Airship. Rattigans cat is way overpowered, so maybe Tobey should have ability to destroy an ally when played.
4. Yzma, there should be only one Right Hand Man card, it is way too easy to find Kronk or bring him back from Heroes status.
5. Queen of Hearts, more brutal fate deck overall.
6. Lady Tremaine, they definitely need to make Lucifer a bit more useful.
7. Jaffar, they should have made Genie have some stronger effect.
You are doing great work, it would be great if you could make video about what would you change in some fate decks or what future Disney Villains you would love to see.

1: Maybe something to try is have the ones that steal power then discard it over time, so you have to get it back asap?
3: Honestly, I think that Basil being easier is fine, as that objective is meant as a backup so losing the Robot Queen isn't basically a Game Over, you're still in the endgame, just have to make a change of plans. If anything, I'd say just like... Add 1 strength so you can't just use the cat to solo him... Or add a "needs 2 allies to kill" passive if anything?
@@alsenddrake7764 Yes, first one is good suggestion. With Basil, biggest problem is when there is Robot Queen and Flying ship at same time, and that is usually very often, and Basil card comes up, it is always better to discard Ship, and leave the Queen, because for queen, it needs at least 3-4 more turns to finish. And if we discard Queen, Rattigan player can end game literally next turn very easily. The point is, it would be fun to make killing Basil just little bit more difficult. And of course, make Toby immune to Cat, just for thematic sake.
I almost completely agree with your power list but for me my main is Scar. I just love winning with lion boi. One of my fave disney villains too. We don't 1v1 so having targets who aren't me helps. Frankly I don't think this game functions very well as a 1v1 since the group fates are supposed to reign in the big bois.

Favorite has to be Pete, the fact he has so much Replayability with having so many varying combinations of where the goals can be just makes me love his play style.
Least favorite would probably maybe be Gaston or Mother Gothel some of their fates are super harsh, even though I love the characters and their aesthetic.
As for Yzma I also like her for how much is going on, with trying to find Kuzco in the unique fate deck set up, or controlling Kronk, Yzma is certainly high up on my characters that I’d play

ive been played with yzma lately (im going through characters, previously maining ratigan) and she is so, so much fun to play. the thing ive run up against with other players is that both times ive played with others someone else beat my by a turn or two.
never played the game, but found the video really enjoyable. Do Root next. Maybe after the final versions of the Marauders get released, taking some of the buffs that the new set up cards gave to some of the factions

So I’ve had only started to play and the first three villains I’ve played was Mother Gothel, Cruella and then Hades. Of course I didn’t win, and it did feel like for them, it’s a lot of setting up things on the board and having a proactive gameplan. But they ultimately land on maybe 5 or so cards in their decks to actually close a game.
I do have to say Hades seems to be the most Fate-resilient of the three I’ve played. And I really like MG’s variety in realm management.

I haven't played every villain in Villainous but I played the Evil Queen probably half a dozen times already because she's so much fun. I only lost once with her. She's definitely my favorite.

We are still missing the latest two extensions, so I can only speak for the base game plus the first - but for us Prince John is always the character we avoid unless we have a child playing with us, because we don't like that he's so easy to play and that he is basically a 20-round-timer. XD I personally love Hades, Dr. Facilier and Dschafar and my mother enjoyes the Red Queen a lot (which I don't understand, but hey~).

I agree with most of what you say, except for Maleficent being my own personal favorite. I do get the "just play cards" thing but I feel like knowing which, where and when to play them is the key so def requires planning and scheming... Besides you can get fated from having all four curses to just one in that "waiting" turn.

Honestly, Maleficent is one of the easiest villains to win with in my opinion. I was playing against three other people, none of which were any bad at the game, and I came to a point where I could have won within 15 minutes. However, I purposefully decided not to so that we could have some more fun, though I still won in the end.
