      Honestly? People don't care. They don't realize that seconds can make the difference. They don't consider it could be themselves or their family we are going to help one day. They think "oh well I'm just going to turn right ahead so it doesn't matter". This happens all the time by the way.

      Way back when, when I was a firefighter (1990s) I had someone tell me they hated the sound of a siren, because it meant someone was in trouble... I said it was a beautiful sound because it meant help was coming! (And Federal Q-2s are just plain sexy!)

      They came out in the late eighties, initially as halogens. Had a couple on my old department (I had since left for law enforcement.) One clear lens and two reds. They've since gone to LED lamps.

      @@Just1American1966 You're off by a few years: "Buckeye Iron and Brass Works of Dayton, Ohio was issued the patent in 1929 and began production in 1930. They produced the lights until either 1962 or '63, then sold the rights to another manufacturer, Machine Products Corporation, also of Dayton."

    Very nice. Can anyone tell me about history of the spinning red lights on the front of the engines ? I may be old, but, the first time I saw that was in the movie “The Blob, of the 1950’s”. It’s still cool, from this Old Vietnam Marine. Thanks

    In Indiana fire apparatus are all red or red/white or red/white/amber. No blue. However volunteer firefighters are required to use all blue on personal vehicles. Police are red/blue. All green is an EMT personal vehicle. The whole Chicago green lamp is something from the old days when the Chief at the time (perhaps 1940's) was an avid boater and felt the green light along with the red was the right thing to do...like a boat. It's more of a traditional thing now...unless I'm mistaken.

      Paul Storer agreed. The time they could save getting out of the house faster would allow them to go without lights and sirens. Why a full response on an alarm? This isn't the 1920s.

    • @dobermanxxxl
      @dobermanxxxl 6 лет назад +3

      Mark Mangarna
      1. Better to start with more resources and cancel them rather than request more at the scene and be behind the 8 ball.
      2. Politics. Pad the call volume for the truck and other units.. this avoids getting fire houses shut down. Show they’re needed and show they’re running. It is what it is.

    • @mikej9470
      @mikej9470 6 лет назад

      Paul Storer I know about calling more resources, but alarms have false activations in excess of 99% in this country. Your reason #2 is more on mark. This is New Jersey. Search for the NJ AG report on apparatus purchase rigging.

What if they angle the fire road out more so that way the trucks don't have to make a 90 degree turn on a 2 lane road, make it more of a 120 degree turn instead improving the speed getting the hell outta there. But if there is a reason why it's like that pls let me know
