You mentioned gender-neutral pants. Something that a lot of people don't know is that the dungarees the guys in the navy wore in the 70s were actually a womens cut! Which is why they made hubby's ass look so fine!
A comment on the history of women wearing pants; in 1968, we girls were required to wear a dress to evening football games and after dances. This wasn't fully lifted until 1971.
I feel like there is SO much to say about women and pants honestly, and one minute isn’t nearly enough time to talk about it fully. It’s so wild to me how an article of clothing can cause such a rise in people!
@@GunnarDeatherage That's how it was for me too...skirts stopped being required in my senior year the 1975-76 school year. Skirts were real short then too. The length made me feel vulnerable. My mom always made matching Short shorts (aka:hot pants) that I wore under my short skirts...it was liberating and cute. I was in a fashion class of my own....I have had very interesting tastes all of my life.
I remember in the mid 90’s working at an estate planning firm in North Carolina. The women working at the firm were forbidden to wear pants while at work. And, we all had to make sure we wore panty hose with our dresses and suited skirts. Let’s just say panty hose on humid NC summers was THE WORST. As much as I loved the job, leaving behind the patriarchal dress code was a definite plus.
@@GunnarDeatherage I remember the day in the 60s when we were finally allowed to wear pants to school. Trousers or bifurcated skirts have an interesting history, starting with the fact that they were derided by the ancient Greeks as effeminate because they were only worn by women in ancient Asiatic cultures. I've got, like, an essay on it somewhere among my ramblings on here.
@@kellyharper367...I wish my mother had thought of that idea too. I lived in Iowa during my childhood. So skirts were really a problem in the winters. I remember how much I hated skirts. The worst is that for school we weren't allowed to wear long skirts to stay warm.

In 1999, I worked in a corporate environment with a dress code that specified women could only wear dresses or skirts, knee length or longer and stockings were required. We froze in winter and sweating in hot, humid summers. We tried to petition to allow pants for women but were denied. One day, 2 women with a clipboard were going from one female worker to another. They got to our team and advised all the female employees they were required to offer up a leg so that one of the women could feel our lower leg to verify we were wearing stockings. 😲 I looked at them both and said, "No. If you touch me I will press charges of sexual harassment. There is no need for either of you to verify we are wearing stockings by touch when you can clearly see that we are. It's wildly inappropriate, abusive, demoralizing, and frankly bizarre and disturbing." The other women on my team also refused and the next day, we all wore pants to work and one of our male colleagues wore a skirt and stockings in solidarity 😊❤. I left that job shortly after.
this is pure sexism, and the women who came along to check your legs should be ashamed. Good on you for wearing pants the next day and well done for your male colleagues who supported you!

A friend of ours who meant well asked this question of my wife, and asked in a very apologetic and earnest way that made it clear that she legitimately was confused, because she was raised on the belief that men doing "masculine roles" and women doing "feminine roles" was intrinsic to family cohesion.
So my wife politely explained that the question of who is the man and who is the woman is like asking who is the fork and who is the knife, when in truth we are a pair of chopsticks. She immediately got it and loved the explanation.
What makes me sad though is how many times we've since used the explanation, and almost every married straight cis woman we've talked to has laughed and said "Wow, I wish I could have that kind of relationship instead."

Great answer, and yes, it's usually cis hetero women asking because they did not ask the right questions of their man before getting married.

I’m in a hetero marriage and we do have that sort of relationship, because we’re both very open-minded and logical, and give the middle finger to sexist traditions. We both support and guide each other as needed, and recognise each others’ strengths and weaknesses.
Fantastic metaphor! I've been married for nearly 36 years, man and woman, and I have been the one to carry and raise my children, handle the finances and run the house. I've made it so my husband "thinks" HE is the one in charge but I was raised by parents who split responsibilities equally. He and his siblings were raised by parents where his mom was in charge of EVERYTHING. She tried to tell me to "submit" to my husband because he's in charge of the marriage. BS! I've shown her and tell her that I am not going to lose MY identity as a strong woman. Unfortunately, LOL, my oldest daughter is too much like her dad and her grandmother. 😅
I grew up in Texas in the 1950's. Female students K-12 were not allowed to wear pants or sandals or patent leather shoes. Pants were masculine. Sandals showed too much skin. Boys could look up our dresses/skirts in the reflection from patent leather. It was a ridiculous way of living and stopped in the 1960's when students said ENOUGH.

Love the preciseness of your work. I wish I had stayed with this art rather than picking an academic major in college. Big mistake. Circa 1960 - high school, skirts had to be knee length or longer. No sandals. So Cal. I’m now in my 80s.
"Who wears the pants" is a backhanded question to reference who is the Superior or the control in the relationship. The only people who would ask this type of question are those that have no respect for anyone other than a male-dominated patriarchal relationship. It's about time to shrug off those gender stereotypes and celebrate love in all forms and people who come in all colors sizes and personalities!!

I just want to say, that I think it’s beautiful how we are breaking out of the binds of what love and a relationship “should be” in this modern age; I mean think about the women and men who fought for women’s rights and civil rights in the past. Sometimes I just breath in how free this time in history is, and though it still has many many problems, how proud those our ancestors would be at how far we’ve come. This world is truly so gorgeous and full and free in this time in history, I fall a little bit more in love with it every day it seems. ✌️🩵

I always hated the question about “who wears the pants”. Relationships are a give and take, and both people should be seen as a team. We need to get out of thinking that one partner is a master while the other is a servant. WTF?! It’s just an unevolved question.

I never liked the whole "who wears the pants?" issue, bc in a family roles are fluid and often times, roles and moments of greater or lesser influence can change.
No matter what, you guys do you, it's all that really matters. Your lives are yours to live on your own terms, and you're doing that beautifully❤
Dresses/skirt combos make me feel powerful in different ways depending on the style. I was all tomboy growing up and hated wearing anything feminine looking before 8th grade. It's quite the change♡ Any style we put on is making an outward show of ourselves and projecting how we want to be viewed, there is always a power in that. Even if it says let me feel hidden because that is as bold a statement as any other. ♡
I always like seeing someone who does not owe anyone an explanation of their relationship answering in a unique and creative way. It's even better when it answers nothing.

Yes!!
I don’t think the term “wearing the pants” always means that there is a negative or unhealthy power dynamic. It can also just mean that one person is the more dominant partner and usually makes the decisions. That can simply be due to personality and circumstance. Nevertheless, there is sometimes a need for a power dynamic in a loving relationship and you can absolutely still have teamwork and growth _inside_ that power dynamic as well - those things aren’t mutually exclusive.
For example, I’ve been with my husband over ten years now but because he owns his own company and has to make so many decisions at work everyday, when it comes to our relationship, I am the one who usually ends up making most of the decisions and is the more dominant of the two. It’s just the dynamic that works for us and it doesn’t mean that we don’t work together and grow as a couple.
@@nailartguy3363 different things work for different people, true. But I have never heard the phrase in connection to "who's the household administator" with a neutral connotation. Most often than not it has been used to identify the partner who is "the boss" understood as a recipient of all of the efforts of the other partner. Where the one cared for and "listened to" is the one "wearing pants". The problem here is how it's used. It doesn't matter who cooks or works and decides where to go on a holiday. Those are just tasks. The problem is that the phrase suggests the presence of the old-fashioned ways and people trying to "translate" the LGBTQ+ relationships into the 50's idea of a relationship. This is my problem with it. There's no need to "translate". Relationship is a relationship and it's not very kind to pry anyway. It's simply okay if you find what works for you. But maybe let's ditch the ridiculous saying 😉
@@sheimi91 Yeah I think it’s a stupid thing to say, especially to people who are in LGBTQ+ relationships, as I have been asked that question many many times, but I definitely prefer that to “So who is the man and who is the woman?” 🤣 I just wanted to point out that even a relationship where one person does technically “wear the pants” can still be a loving, caring relationship with teamwork and mutual growth. You might not have ever heard of the expression used that way, but if you look up “to wear the pants” it is often defined as “to be the person in a relationship who makes the decisions” or “to be the dominant partner in a relationship”. So while it is an old-fashioned expression rooted in a heteronormative, gendered view on relationships, it’s not _always_ used in such a negative way as you think. I agree that it would be great if we ditched it, but let’s also not make reductive generalizations about other people’s relationships, particularly not when based on our interpretation of an outdated saying. 😉

I just care a lot about how language influences the way we think, and the other way round. Precisely like the "man and woman" question is reaaaally bad 😅. I'm trying to pay more attention to how we speak about those things, both in English and in my own language. So maybe to sum up my thoughts so far - phrases and vocabularies aside 😉 - as long as we feel safe and loved and appreciated in our relationships it doesn't matter what the task distribution is. But I will definitely keep what you shared with me in mind ⭐

I'll never forget a traumatic event in my life when I wore pants to walk to my elementary school on a snow blowing day back in the 60s. I was sent to the principles office and made to stay in there until my mother could bring me a dress to school! I was a tiny thing and froze to death anyway., but was shamed and humiliated that day for trying to stay warm! Thank you, Gunnar for this beautiful tribute to fairness.
My father was an excellent tailor! On this vídeo, I went back to the past and reminded my loved father! He used to saw with my younger sister on his lap!❤
As girls, my classmates fought to be able to wear Jeans and pants to high school. We had to kneel to be measured if our skirts were too short. So I at 69, almost 70, really appreciate wearing pants. Due to a disability that requires wearing special shoes that do not go with dresses, I usually wear pants, looking forward to this pattern

They’re equals and take responsibility of their own actions and admit accountability for their mistakes. Gunnar, those pants are gorgeous! Not only are they classic, they're adaptable.
The pattern is perfect and can make a statement in every season, and in wide range of fabrics. And not only are they gender inclusive, they're size/shape inclusive! Tall, thin, broad, plus or petite - this garment will look tailored and fabulous!
Side note but I also hate how "wow, she wears the pants" is used as an insult anytime a woman shows "assertiveness" towards her husband in any form and to any degree. It could be about something as dumb as choosing a restaurant or vetoing a big purchase. Frankly it's insulting to both of them, labeling the woman as "bossy" and the man as a "doormat". Y'all don't know their relationship, as long as it's healthy, consented and balanced, leave them alone!!

My Mother was born in 1956 and wasn't permitted to wear pants in high school in the Chicago Suburbs.
I wear “the pants” in my relationship when it comes to the finances being brought in. My partner wears “the pants” when it comes to maintaining our food and the housework because he’s at home all the time.

While in the United States Marine Corps I had to climb ladders in a skirt. That was in 1980. I was finally given a “pants chit” in 1981 which allowed me to wear them. The struggle was real 😂I so love what you do and your insights. Be blessed.

Love the matching plaids in your pants. Learning how to sew, i was introduced to sewing with plaids. Matching them was the hardest thing to do in sewing. The garment was an À-line full length skirt. Now when shopping, I notice all the unmatched plaid garments being sold.

i remember when in the 60's my high school FINALLY allowed us girls to wear pants to school and my mother continued to say "No, thou shalt continue to wear skirts and dresses because i say so!!" and also on the premise that my grades would slip because she equated being comfortable with being lazy.
decades later, she finally confessed as to how ignorant her decision was given the amount of money she could have been saving. hehehe
moral of the story: comfort = lazy unless money is concerned at which point all bets are off and who cares about grades!!
