DIY denim corset top - JEANS upcycle - how to turn jeans into a top

  • Hello there! :)
    This is video is short but sweet: I had these jeans for ages, I've worn and washed them so many times! When the zipper broke I wanted to recycle them and realised that the denim was so nice and stretchy, I could easily make a corset top out of this!
    Unfortunately you can still kind of see the wrinkles from my knees - no washing or ironing got them out, however I am still happy with the result and how easy it was. I will now thrift some more denim and create more of these tops!
    Please don't forget to like and subscribe - it's totally free of charge and I appreciate it more than you can imagine! :)

    I've been wanting to be a seamstress since I was a teenager.. but I'm not really good at math and I get stressed so easily. This quarantine I've seen lots of tutorials but I was still feeling that this was not for me, everything is so fast and they have a lot of confidence and everything seems to be done at the first try. But this tutorial is perfect for someone so anxious like me. The way you explain and the calmness of your voice make me feel like it's simple but not like "is just like putting butter on a toast" easy. It was an everything can be fixed easy. I am grateful you putted the way you double checked the symmetry and the way you fixed the excess 💕❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
    thank you! I'm trying this tomorrow 💝

      wow, thank you so much for such a sweet and thoughtful comment! I am so happy to hear you would like to try my tutorial! I honestly can't tell you how many times I messed up - sewing is definitely challenging - even my mom who sews since she's a teenager gets frustrated and upset with her DIY's still! I would love it if you would like to share your result with me on Instagram! ❤️️❤️️

      So how did it turn out?

    • @judithbeens7389
      @judithbeens7389 2 года назад +1

      Don't be discouraged, the people getting it right on the first try now have had years of failure and redoing stuff so that now they are experienced enough to know what mistakes to avoid. Any time you mess something up is a learning situation about what doesnt work (or just doesnt work for you) Im fairly good at sewing but seeing all these people on youtube makes me feel like Im not good enough, but thats also what my friends think when they see what Im working on. Good luck on your journey

    • @recreatefulchannel
      @recreatefulchannel  3 года назад +79

      I am quite new to sewing myself still and I can only say that patience and perseverance are the most important parts of it :) I just get frustrated easily and need to take breaks as otherwise I hit a wall :D This design was actually really easy, especially because my fabric was suuuper stretchy - so make sure you use stretchy fabric and try it on along the way and always cut it bigger to be safe as you can always make something smaller super easily :) 💖 I'd love to see your result if you'd like to share it with me on Instagram! 💖

    • @recreatefulchannel
      @recreatefulchannel  Год назад

      If you use fabric that is equally as stretchy as the reference top it would still work :) if it is less stretchy you could drape the pieces on yourself to take them in around the waist and having a tie up back would give you more flexibility too :)

    • @recreatefulchannel

      It should be a tight top, just bear in mind that if you do go for a tighter top the stretch in both tops need to be roughly the same so she can put it on and off easily. Otherwise you can add an opening to it :)

    • @recreatefulchannel
      @recreatefulchannel  2 года назад

      It's two different patterns - I traced the shape of the top and then cut it in half. One side is for the front pieces and one side is for the back pieces. The front is longer and has wavy shapes, the back is shorter and straight. Because we cut the patterns to mirror the sides anyway i only used half the top to create the patterns for each side

    This is a very good tutorial!
    But it will only work out for skinny girls or girls without a lot of curves.
    It’s because the way the pattern is made, the fit won’t be great on people like me, unless I would use a really stretchy fabric. But in my opinion really stretchy denim can look super cheap.
    Nevertheless it’s a really good tutorial!
    I just wanted to mention that because I can imagine a lot of curvy girls trying this and being sad about the outcome.

      I didnt add any closure to it as the fabric is super stretchy. But for stiffer fabric I would just add a zipper or a lace up back :) ❤️

      I haven't - since its denim and quite a structured fabric the seams wont fall apart as easily, but I recently came into the habit of zigzagging the raw edges on the inside of my diy's :) but so far I have not had any issues with raw edges even in less structured fabric :)

    Hey can we hand sew it instead of a machine?

    • @recreatefulchannel
      @recreatefulchannel  3 года назад +2

      Sure you could - I would just make sure that your stitches are really small as the top is tight fitting and maybe stitch over one seam twice so that there are no gaps. A handheld sewing machine is quite cheap to buy so that might be an option? Or a second hand sewing machine, just in case you'd like to sew a couple of things :)
