The Legend is Retiring- Ep34- Outsider Log Cabin

  • My dad and I have been on a journey to build our own log cabin. This series of videos is a 'behind-the-scenes' look of our bigger "Log Cabin on a Budget" series. This spring, we have been hauling logs to our portable sawmill, and processing them into lumber. In this episode I also reminisce about all that we've been through over the years to get to where we are today. And finally, I make an announcement... the legend is retiring.

    I enjoy your videos which I recently discovered, Thank you for being family friendly; i've never heard a single offensive word on your channel, and your explanations are clear for my 73-yr-old brain. I hope Mrs. Outsider is doing well. Please give updates on her and little outsider. I love your spirit and your openness in giving God the glory for all things. I'm an old admirer from Alabama, USA.

    Replacing one good ol tractor with another good ol tractor! I've ran them both, and they are good tractors! You'll like the modern conviences of the power steering over the armstrong steering! The three point hitch is a plus, also!

    At 9 years old I learnt to drive on a Massy 35. Now 42 years later my sister still has it on the farm back home in West Wales. A triple roll over lottery win wouldn't buy that tractor. A legendary machine that my grandfather bought new in 1963. It has caught fire 3 times and been rebuilt. Good luck with yours and keep the videos coming.

    Loved watching the old iron work. I have a few old Farmalls. Easy to work on, and keep going under the toughest conditions. Too bad your W-4 didn’t have a 2 point Fast Hitch. That would have given you a good lift system. If you can, show us the W-4 after it’s been restored by the guy you sold it to.
    Nice score on the Massey. That looks like a solid tractor.

    • @tyfrank3427
      @tyfrank3427 4 года назад

      None of the standard tractors had a fast hitch. You can get live hydraulics but they are a rare option on a W-4. More common on a W-6 or W-9.

    • @PeterEmery
      @PeterEmery 5 лет назад +2

      Looks like it may have been used in an orchard, that could account for the underneath exhaust. Have it pointing up, keep it out of the snow & mud. The MF 35 (I thought I saw 35x on one of the stickers) is a great machine, especially if it's the 3-cyl Perkins, they were rated at almost 45 hp. There's also a differential lock for sticky situations. The pedal for that feature is operated by the heel of your right foot.

    I had a 1955 R110 straight 6 International Harvester Robin's Egg Blue pickup up I bought from the Cheyenne, Wyoming Conoco Oil distributor. It was 1977 after I graduated from high school. Oh man It had a low low 1st gear. I could throw bales of Alfalfa Hay to my uncle's farm. Then when college rolled around I drove 600 miles to Texas at 50-55 mph, 60 down hill! I handed it down to my younger brother in 1987. There years before marriage. He rebuilt the engine, wow so beautiful! Sadly it sits in his garage while he travels all over doing Insurance Appraisals for hurricane or other major damaged areas. He refuses to sell it back to me. I know I know everyone he doesn't have to. I miss it horribly. I'm 61 and a retired OTR driver and handicapped. I can drive still. Geez I shouldn't post. But I guess I'm saying is that vehicles from that period were solid and stout. I hate computer and electronics. I can't fix my vehicles. $$$$$$ out the wazoos to the garage. Sorry for the windbag post.

    Consider getting a carry all. You could roll the log on to it and lift it up and roll it off onto the mill. Save a lot on the back. I use mine to move firewood logs and lift them off the ground to cut them up. also good for moving anything you can get on a pallet.

I went to law school, did the whole corporate America ladder clumbing, houses, cars, etc. Everything changed when I lost my mom and my brother...my mind and soul shifted. They are also not as capable. A W-4 is 26 horsepower but a new 26 horsepower tractor is much less capable. Why? Because they are built so light. a W-4 weighs about 4000 lbs, a new 26 hp tractor is about half that heavy.

    Truthfully I am kinda glad you getting rid of the tractor. It was a great old machine and I don't mean to be the safety police but I seen that tractor get a bit light on the front end and could tip with no roll bar. Perhaps your new one will have a roll bar option. My Kubota is a 2010 which can be seen on my channel. It already has more rust then your old beast. Not likely will it make it to even 20 years Take care and keep them rolling. I enjoy your channel.

      I have a 1944 model W-4 which my grandpa purchased in 1951. For 11 years that tractor farmed a half section of land by itself. Can you imagine a new 26 horsepower tractor farming 300 acres? Much less one that has done it for 11 years and still heavily used afterward for many years and it will still run when it's 76 years old? If the battery is dead, I can start it with a crank... That wouldn't happen today.

Snatch block hooked up high you could pull the logs up easy,, logs tongs with a swivel time savers... those heavy ones could tip you over without some weights up front or a loader..A loader would be the cats!! stay safe my friend,, s**t happens fast,, tractors ,, chainsaws, heavy logs over head,, only takes one mistake.. Aloha for a name "RED LADY TWO"!!!

    That 3pt hitch will really open up what a tractor can do. At least now you can keep the logs from digging into the ground when pulling them. At first I thought you were going to get a newer one with 4wd and a cab. Best of luck with the new one, the old one was for sure a workhorse.

    • @TheOutsiderCabin
      @TheOutsiderCabin  6 лет назад +3

      I can't wait to utilise the 3pth. It's really going to change how I do things in the bush. And my sawmill will certainly thank me for the cleaner logs. Someday I might have a 4wd with power-steering and a bucket, but I'm more than content with the simplicity and toughness of these old machines.

    i bought a mf-35 deluxe last year...i could barely turn the steering wheel...i put a new steering column on it , and it steers great now...but a new steering column is pretty expense.....now i have to deal with a transmission oil leak.....it is a great running diesel....it may need a little love to get it in top shape , but for 3k$ , and it came with an almost new bush-hog , i believe it was a great deal..........i hope you have good luck with your mf-35.......allen

    You should have kept it and mounted a buzz saw on the front for cutting firewood.

    I have 2 tractors and I will never get rid of them because they are way better than any new tractors my first tractor I have is a 1945 Farmall H it pulls logs like nothing and anything else I use it for and my second tractor is a 1947 Ford 8N and the same thing it pulls logs and everything else.. both tractors start every time and they are easy to fix and easy to get parts for .. but a 3 point hitch is great to have

    Nice up grade.
    We used a tractor to harvest many logs from the woods for fire wood, it helps to lower the three point hitch drape your strap over the draw bar and clevis it to the tow bar, when you raise the three point hitch it will raise the end of the log off the ground . makes for a easier drag and less dirt.
    Good luck with he build.

      Thanks for the tip. I actually started doing that today with my logs. It's SO nice to finally be able to pick the log end up while towing.

      A friendly FYI: dragging a log is called skidding.
      Skid the log out of the woods to the mill.

      Charles Bynum When I finish the cabin, I'll probably be as busy with the sawmill as ever.

    Congratulations for the new tractor. It's a Diesel one, more comfortable and secure (cause the seat is ahead of the rear axle).
    You will spend less money in fuel, drive it better and will may link implements on It.
    Hurray!

      Yes I'm already loving the better seating position on the new Massey. The W4 had me sitting right off the back end. lol

    You are exactly right.... They don't make tractors like they did back in the 50s or even earlier......

      lol Yes, I'm glad it's finally gone for the summer. We have winter for approximately 5 to 6 months. Believe it or not, this is an improvement from when I used to live further north. Winter was 7 months long there.

    The “new” tractor is a great upgrade now you just need to search out a bucket loader for the Massey and make a huge improvement getting wood onto the sawmill.

      I wouldn't recommend a bucket for a ST tractor, it puts lots of stress in these old tractors' front axle

      the bummer about loaders is it would make it less agile for trails
