Within a single night, over 10,000lbs of snow fell on my cabin roof, which threatened to collapse through the tarp and into the cabin, burying our tools. The snow was too deep for my snowmobile to travel in, so I snowshoed into the cabin instead. I needed to see for myself if the roof tarp had survived the night.

    Fun fact of the day:
    - Fresh snow weighs *at least* 7 pounds per cubic foot.
    - The roof footprint is 765 square feet.
    - Roof square footage X 2.5 feet of snow X 7lbs of snow per cubic foot = 13,387.5 total pounds of snow that fell on the roof.
    Crazy, eh?

You and your father are masters of your craft! And your videos are well-produced, too. Seeing all that snow brought back memories of living on Newfoundland in the 1960’s. My father was stationed at the American Air Force base, Enerst Harmon AFB, outside of Stephenville. In the 3 1/2 years we were there, the total accumulation of snow was over 900 inches! Being in grade school, I loved it, but during one blizzard, my Mom watched me disappear as I walked to the bus stop. And it was only about 50 feet from the front door. Prayers are still being lifted up for your wife and family...

I literally shivered when the wind lifted the tarp on the roof of the big cabin. The pop-up looked so cozy and tranquil. The fire in the stove made it seem like the warmest, best place in the world to be. I loved the wildlife caught on your game camera. I would want to take a stack of books, warm down duvet, art supplies, plenty of tea, coffee and soup and just hole in for the rest of winter. You are making a life as close to nature and God that one can be. Beautiful video and narrative...as usual.

What a great thing to be able to tell your children, that you and your dad built the cabin together. Most kids today rarely think past their next day off. I asked the kid at the local T-mobile if the power went out tomorrow for an extended time and he knew it was coming what would be the 1st thing he would do. Be proud of yourself and your accomplishments. Hope we see you doing some gardening in the near future. Order you a copy of Clyde's Garden Planter to help teach you when to plant what. Thanks again for the awesome videos.

One comment, for what it`s worth: Harbor Freight does sell truck tarps which are extremely strong, but are made with an open weave, so wind will go right through it, but it will hold snow from going through. If you put that down on the beams first, then the standard tarp on top of that, the heavy snow will shed, but if the top tarp gets trashed in a wind storm, the bottom tarp will not be affected by heavy wind. I know this because I live in PA and we get regular lake effect storms in winter and 80 mile an hour winds from Canada (thanks a bunch, LOL). These open weave tarps are worth their weight in gold when it comes down to brass tacks.

Holy Snow Drift, Batman, 2 1/2 FEET of snow!!!!!😨😨 Sorta of hard for those of us who live in warmer climes (few days of mid-70 degrees F here in south central Texas this past week). I had a 20X24 steel pole tarp garage with an 8/12 pitch. After two years the tarps deteriorated so I added steel rafters at 2’ centers and corrugated polyethylene roofing. The roof had purlins halfway down each side. The pole frame was joined with welded steel tube brackets. The roof survived twenty three years through three snow storms, two at 2(+)’ and one over 3’. Snow in Seattle is wet and heavy. In reality the roof was starting to deteriorate in about twenty year and required yearly repairs for three years. The roofing was sagging longitudinally between rafters and distorting at the purlins. If I had added intermediate purlins it would have lasted longer. With the steep pitch heavy snow slid off the roof although towards the end the material wasn’t as slick and it accumulated.

In future cabins, if you had made a loop at the bottom of your tarps sufficient enough to run a small tree through and fasten it to the structure, instead of relying on the grommets, you might have fared better. Also, a used billboard vinyl which would otherwise be thrown away, could suffice as a more durable shelter cover. On a personal note, what a privilege to have your father working with you and having these times to look back on with appreciation that his knowledge and presence helped you do all you have done. I trust you will have children of your own to pass this legacy down to them. This all reminds me of life near Saranac Lake, NY.

Both those roofs holding exemplifies the NEED for good planning when building in snow country ir just about anywhere! Take into consideration the elements of where you live and the build accordingly.
Your videos are great, by the way. I've learned quite a lot and your care for the woods, only using what is already dead or diseased or dying shows how WELL your elders raised you! We are Shepherds of this world, not destroyers.
I don't mean to use your channel to pontificate but I see it all around. Houses SO big you need a map, THOUSANDS of McMansions built and then left empty, woodlands destroyed for absolutely no good reason. Farmlands destroyed, insects and wildlife decimated through HORRID farming practices and the list goes on. All in the name of progress! What progress? We NEED to reconnect with the earth and our spirit selves and learn to live again and not simply take and take without giving anything back.

If they could come back in time you'd have one of their uncomfortable boots as a permanent tattoo on your ass. To assume that was the life, full of disease , war, hunger and fear is so idiotic. You wouldn't survive a month without a single modern instrument. 😕🙃🤔🤔🤔😉😉😉

Interesting facts on the snow load. We have a 45 degree pitch with a steel roof on our 24x24 log cabin. When the snow decides to come off, one had better not be below it. It makes a huge sound. You have built yours well like ours. The 4' overhang is an absolute must, i think. keeps it away much as possible. With the steel roof it scoots out quite a always before landing. Greetings from the woods of N.E. MN. Have a blessed day and hello to your Father.

That scene when you came came into the clearing of the pop up cabin, fairy tail stuff. I recon as soon as you heat up the inside all that snow would have just slid off anyways - great concept - there could be a patient in there somewheres?

Bungie cords ... use bungie cords to hold the tarp always tight/taut. Or use a jug of water/log and gravity to keep it from flapping. The wind will tear it apart in no time at all.

    • @gettintheresafelywithpatf2869
      @gettintheresafelywithpatf2869 4 года назад

Donald Hofman why would you need plans for such a simple build, each joint is cut 1/2 of the board width, and to the thickness of its mating board. So if you are building with 2x8 lumber, your notches would be 2 inches x 4 inches, two of the sides would start with 2x4 lumber on the sub floor, while the end boards would have the interlocking notch, and be 8 inches wideThe side walls will always be 1/2 the height higher then the end wall, until you build the gable ends.
Notice: I used dimensional lumber sizes of ruff cuts, and I’m working on theory lengths for all sides are not given because I don’t know the square footage you are planning on building. If you are thinking of building this cabin, I would start with a scaled down version big enough for one or two people and small enough to tow behind a bicycle. This way you can perfect your notches, and any structural issues you might have. Please note that he reinforced the small tang of the notch on the exterior side of each board, this is because of the grain of the wood would be weaker in this location. I would have preferred seeing a saddle created to support the ridge beam. But none the less, this was a great build, and a very creative thought process, the hinged rafters were a cool idea by them selves, this can also be accomplished in a few cost effective ways, a drilled hole with threaded rod and nuts is one way, the old mortise and tenon could be another. Remember it is up to us to express our creativity as well!
I also noticed that the walls had a gap at the base, so on the outside, he should have placed another strip of wood like he did for each stack of boards to close the air gap.
For the size of his cabin, I would use ruff cut materials and surface only on side and both edges, either 2x6 or 2x8, keeping 2x4 or 2x3 structure supports and rafters and foundation supports (for a smaller cabin) 4x4 or any larger timbers can be used for foundation as long as each one is equal in height in one direction.
For a scale model build, you could use tongue and groove pine, 3/4x4” 12 or 16’ this way you get 2 walls, in one piece of lumber!

Heads Up... When you put that ladder up against the tree the best thing you can do is climb it with someone else standing on the bottom rung [with the claws/feet poking into the ground] and after you you climb up slide a rope though the opening on the ladder rung out through the other side and then tie it tight around the tree trunk preventing the top from ever sliding off it and the long fall that goes with it...
