Ahh, to hear him speak his own poetry, what a treat.
Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?
This gave me goosebumps...

What's odd is that I always think the "How did it come to this" line is part of the poem, but as you can hear here, it isn't.
Peter Jackson didn't think people could follow "Where *now* the horse and the rider," had to switch that to "Where *are*..."; the "how did it come to this" just closes out his presumption in this scene that his audience is stupid and childish and can't deal with anything archaic. Not to mention that he could never allow something like Aragorn knowing the horse and rider poem, chanting it in Rohirric a/k/a Anglo-Saxon, then translating it on the fly. It's sort of a miracle that the poetic force at all survives all of Jackson's monkeying around
