I hope the family is suing the Calgary police. He called and told them he was getting threatening emails and the cop said the way it was worded wasn't enough for them to do anything. The police should of asked for the emails and gone over them and contacted the killer. They were clearly threatening emails....who cares if they aren't correctly worded. Well another Judge alone making the decision of 2 murderers and she went against the jury of the 1st trial. Unbelievable…same evidence given at both trials , there is definitely something wrong with these Judges whom I think need training on a lot of these laws. The shooter practically had a flashing sign saying “look at me.” Talk about Dumb and Dumber!! The second judge was completely wrong in her rulings. It’s just so odd that a strange man (ie non employee) could access the building so easy. I used to work in the CIBC tower downtown Toronto and there were 3 controls. First you needed a fob to get into the elevator area; Second, if anyone extra was in an elevator who did not scan a fob all elevators would stop/stay open and security would have to check us all, there were scanners on the elevator doors that counted the # of people; third - once you get to the desired floor you can’t just walk in to an open office space - there are further locked doors that you need the fob for. All fobs were provided by the building security services with strict protocols and sign offs by company executives allowing an employee to have a fob - so every fob was assigned to specific individuals & they could trace us throughout the building. It felt safe.
when Mr Beuchamp reached out to the police in my view the policed failed him badly. if this was the judge's friends or family member, how would she sentence these two. One person dead and two criminals can eventually go free. the family should sue the police force for not taking Deers threatening emails seriously

Deer was not "granted" statutory release. Statutory release is mandated. Offender is released after serving 2/3 of the sentence and have strict conditions imposed on that release.
There was no doubt they'd be found guilty. If Jacques Beauchamps wasn't threatened, I don't know what it was. Those two are where they belong. And, considering their age, they might never get out. Much too late, but out of the way. This murder could have been prevented, however. Big time. My condolences go to his family and friends.

Officer Fontaine who took the call was absolutely wrong about the law. Deer could have been charged then and there but perhaps Fontaine was getting near the end of his shift and didn't want to be bothered to write up a report, or who knows why he lied and said the emails weren't specific enough? And you could hear in his voice and his clipped, nasty way of answering that, no matter what Mr Beauchamp said, it wasn't going to be enough to lay charges. So Fontaine was absolutely wrong. No need to change any laws, just the police who apply them (or don't bother to).

I don’t believe the criminal has more rights than a victim or the victim’s family. The victim’s family should have the right to appeal the judges decision. That’s mind boggling

They were the same emails after the murder. What changed? Nothing except the attitude of the police.

Shocking indictment of the Canadian police! Mr Beauchamp received a written death threat and the police don't even talk to Deere!?
Yet they charged him with criminal harassment .... AFTER the murder. Same emails, same wording. Had he been charge before the murder when Mr Beauchamp complained and was fed a line of BS by Officer Fontaine, this tragedy may never have occurred. Laziness, incompetence, disinterest, lack of training ... who knows. But they have to do better. This case took place years ago .. my experience with the police as recently as 6 months ago is pretty much the same. They try to make you feel like you're a nuisance, your complaint isn't valid, you're the one in the wrong...anything but pick up a pen and do some actual work.

And they were enough of a threat to charge Deer AFTER the murder. What changed? Nothing, except the police acted, but too late. The cop on the phone was flat out lying about what constitutes a threat. Lazy, incompetent, badly trained...whatever. But charging Deer before the murder could have easily headed this tragedy off.

They immediately charged Deer with harrassment after they killed they guy. This could have been easily averted with a police visit - they would have stopped if they knew there was heat on them. This is by no means surprising.
They didn't have to conduct a visit. They could have charged him before the murder. Same emails. The cop on the phone was flat out lying to avoid having to pick up a pen and fill a report. Had Deer been charged before the murder, he might have thought twice about going through with it knowing cops had their eyes on him. Or he might have been in jail for the emails. Either way, it would very probably have averted the tragedy.

Deer was not "granted" statutory release. Statutory release is mandated. Offender is released after serving 2/3 of the sentence and have strict conditions imposed on that release.
There was no doubt they'd be found guilty. If Jacques Beauchamps wasn't threatened, I don't know what it was. Those two are where they belong. And, considering their age, they might never get out. Much too late, but out of the way. This murder could have been prevented, however. Big time. My condolences go to his family and friends.

It was unfortunate about the police and the emails, but the police were following the law. We dont give the police enough credit for their hard work. They must get so frustrated when they work all those hour on a case and to have it go through 2 trial and the criminals get away with a slap on the wrist.

Why??? It was perfectly fine AFTER the murder. Deer was charged with criminal harassment for exactly the same emails Mr Beauchamp called the police about. Officer Fontaine who took the call was absolutely wrong about the law. Deer could have been charged then and there but perhaps Fontaine was getting near the end of his shift and didn't want to be bothered to write up a report, or who knows why he lied and said the emails weren't specific enough? And you could hear in his voice and his clipped, nasty way of answering that, no matter what Mr Beauchamp said, it wasn't going to be enough to lay charges. So Fontaine was absolutely wrong. No need to change any laws, just the police who apply them (or don't bother to).
This case is like 20 years ago. come on crime beat, this is too old especially with all the cases that happen every year SMH

Yes, nothing about the emails changed after the murder, yet police saw their way clear to charge Deer with criminal harassment for them The officer on the phone sounded combative, argumentative, confrontational, closed to discussion or explanation, almost acting as a defence lawyer for the author of the emails. He locked his brain on one thing and nothing would have caused him to pick up a pen and write a report like he should have done. The threats clearly constituted a crime, at least after the murder.
