This is a crazy idea but what if the planet we’re on is actually Skaro and the Citizens of FineTime are the original ancestors of either the Thals, the Kaled’s, or both?
Most of the previous episodes so far were basically fairytales with no real sci-fi science behind them. If we find ourselves in a hotel labyrinth with a Minotaur on the loose, it would be revealed that they were on board a spaceship with an alien Minotaur. if they were ghost bar of Charles Dickens on Christmas Eve, it would be revealed to be aliens from another world. But lately there have been no scientific explanations on most of the monsters or villains in the shows here though it’s straight up sci-fi that’s what I love
Absolutely loved this and didn’t really notice any of the micro aggressions which I’m annoyed at myself for but it’s my own fault for being seconds away from sleeping while watching it. And I was so salty Ricky died cause he seemed like a nice guy. It kinda reminded me of the whole ‘I can fix them’ thing
I think pepper-bean will be a returning character. I’m curious to see how they’ll bring her back, maybe the planet there on ends up being important later
While I picked up on all the obvious racist stuff, rewatching it again now while this uploads, it’s insane how many small micro-aggressions you can miss. Because we assume she’s a good bean, like every other Doctor-lite episode lead, it was easy to assume I’d misunderstood what she said or gave her the benefit of the doubt. The Doctor’s pop-up did look a bit spammy, compared to Ruby’s more careful approach. The disgust that they were in the same room at the time made a sort of sense, seeing as all their community is addicted to Skyping each other. But with the ending, going back it makes all those nasty lines form an insanely well-done picture, and there are so many other micro-aggressions I missed. Amazingly well done.
I have resolved after 73 yards to only watch the rest of this season through the eyes of reviewers, however your comment here makes me think of what people of color can go through. When something happens you ask, was that racism or was that something benign? Though that wasn't the highlight, I supposed RTD did that successfully if only on second viewing you go, YUP YUP, thats was racist. On the one hand we cant see racism everywhere but on the other, we cant pretend that it stopped existing.
@@doro626 exactly. You can assume all sorts of things. So many comments she makes are blatantly dodgy, I just assumed she didn’t know better, or that it was just a wonky bit of script, but oh no, actually intentional!
I know a lot of analogies can be made from this episode... destructive influencers, mindless followers, obvious racism, etc... and they are all valid analogies. The one I see jump out is the intense hate without reason. When the Doctor tries to warn the girl she won't listen to him until Ruby (someone who resembles her) convinces her to listen to him. At the end she would rather hold onto her hate and prejudices than follow the man who saved her. The way she turned on Ricky in order to save herself seems to be an oft played out theme within hate groups as well. I really loved the subversion of the Ricky character showing that not everyone has the same brainwashed mindset even when they're lumped together. I truly loved this episode and as heartbreaking as it was, there was a lot to absorb from this. Thank you for the review! You gained a new subscriber.
I agree. My favorite episode and I was not expecting it. At the end I sat there stunned. Powerful. And for the first time the Doctor acts like The Doctor.
@@DeusLucifer The Doctor has been angry all through his career. Even if you only look at New Who he's been angry so many times, and he cries a fair amount in the more dramatic episodes. What have you been watching?
@@Scumner He doesn't cry over this kind of stuff, he's used to flashing his universal badge to blend in and not caring at all about a society's personal hang ups, he will trick dumb people into getting saved cause he's seen all of time, he knows generational racism can wane over time just like in real life. He's not a doomer Gen Z. He's supposed to be the Doctor. And this was one of his MANY most un-Doctor like moments. @@9751matt He's never had to go through these situations before, The Doctor has cried plenty of times throughout the modern era, and he's a new regeneration, they're all different, that's the point.
I really enjoyed this episode and it’s mostly due to the ending. What’s so clever about this episode is that it doesn’t explicitly scream “They’re all Racist”. It’s brilliantly subtle and the ending could have different meanings depending on who’s watching the episode. For example I thought the reason why the citizens of FineTime didn’t want to travel with The Doctor was because of him being perceived as poor from the Uber Rich citizens of FineTime. This is because I found the ultimate demise of the FineTime citizens to be Prejudice of anyone that was not within their BUBBLE. Originally it’s their external AI Bubble’s that are trying to Kill them, and in the end it’s their internal Prejudicial Bubble that ultimately Dooms them. It’s completely Tragic and the Acting from Ncuti was absolutely phenomenal in this scene. To Go from Hope and optimism, to disbelief, to still trying to honestly save these awful citizens of FineTime, to laughing at the absurdity of Prejudice, to anger and sadness was just perfection from Ncuti. Honestly the 15th Doctor is becoming one of my favorites of all time up there with Tom Baker and David Tenet. Just what an ending to this episode.
This is RTD showing us all that Doctor Who is so back! That was really good. It looked in the trailer it might be a weak one but NO! Lindy was such a jerk towards Ricky and The Doctor. I ended up really liking the story and it's one of RTD's best stories ever!
Here are my thoughts on the symbolism in this episode. Here are three possible ways to understand the episode. I think the symbolism they were going for is the rich young people had locked themselves away from perceived danger, but the real danger was themselves. They were completely self-centred and self-obsessed. I think the commentary was about the rich elites who live in secure bubbles, secure from their perceived dangers, but unaware of the real dangers they face. It could also be a commentary on how pretty young attractive women prey on young men via OF, but they themselves are preyed upon by rich older men. For example, Andrew Tate. I think it was symbolic of a rich gated community. They think they are safe from their perceived dangers, but the real dangers is the systems they set up to protect themselves. Look at how predatory Home Owner's Associations can be with their rules and fines.
I think a lot of it is about racism though (pretty much the biggest theme there throughout), and how we accept micro aggressions every day without confronting them before they grow into major actions
@@Scumner I've watched it again and the racism is more obvious to me. I suppose I saw it more as rich snobbery rather than racism. Probably because I have more experienced with snobbery than racism.
