R.I.P Original Destiny
You could have changed the world.
Clyde Hasz what game is this? never heard of it before. is it a new bungie game?
+Clyde Hasz It's all there. Staten just wasn't there to explain it to us. 19:38 24:53
Here is the true source of our problems: 32:00 *-* 34:10 .
The Science Fiction clashes with the Science Fantasy in Destiny and often without transition or explanation.
Everything about the game is so ambiguous and vague, it confuses players. Bungie fans are used to a rich narrative. Story telling 101 is that you need to set boundaries and limits, rules for every element. Like in Terminator 2, it was established that the T-1000 can't change its mass or form complex moving parts. It paints the picture and explains new concepts for viewers. When you have artists passing off little things as simply "It's his soul exploding", they are already limiting their own creativity by failing to go that extra mile. Staten's approach would have created more depth and background for the characters (which seem to be HIVE). How ironic.
more and more I am starting to believe this game never had any real cohesive foundation to begin with, the game we thought it would be never existed and never could exist. It's simply impossible.
Anyone else really want to see that Fantasy game from that concept art made. Really badly.
yeah you will in a few years it is called Matter and bungie are making it right now.
@@greggkenshin360 no they aren’t lmao, they’re making an Overwatch/ Valerent hero shooter, it’s supposed to be all fluffy and cartoony and just a monetization money grab

Yeah I miss these nerds, they knew how to design a game, and revolutionize multiplayer as we know it... and had a since of humor, and humbleness you just don't see.

Derik NA The fellow on the right has worked for Bungie this entire time. 😂
It saddens me that Destiny went through development changes in 2014. I feel sorry for Joe Staten. I'm sure he put a lot of hard work including others, building this rich story line but something happened down the road. And that is why Joe Staten quit. His story would become altered and he felt like he had no part in this universe anymore. I hope he tells us why he truly quit Bungie. What happened during that time? Was it Activision?
Probably an influx of resources from Activision caused a lack of organization. They might have had to pull a Halo 2 and chop some stuff out. I'm confident that after Staten left, their new writer gutted the story severely.
@@BungieStudios Aka Luke Smith who had a "casual" take on the game, and even went as far as retconning Destiny 1 lore due to their incompetence.

@@tardwrangler1019 Its funny, IIRC I wrote this during Season of Arrivals expecting us to maybe get a taste of the true Darkness in Beyond Light. But nope, a year down the line and MAYBE we'll get a shot in Witch Queen's raid. With all the time its taken, all the hype, the true Darkness better be the best thing Destiny has ever delivered.
@@zanolsena It will either be in the raid or directly in Lightfall.
The game I always wanted, is the game that will never get made.
If Joe had stayed, this game would be the greatest game of all time
Chris Franz no, no it would not, it would have been better. Being he took the story with him to flip, the man off as he left with a good bunch of the employees of bungie.
Bungie has always been, rebellious we've seen it with Microsoft, issue is they went from the greedy hands of Microsoft, to the hands of the devil.
Actually, Joe should have stayed, but it is understandable why he left. Activision made Statin rewrite the story over like 3 times cause they didn’t like his vision for Destiny, so Activision forced Joe Statin to quit and have taken over Creative Control of Destiny and now Destiny is a shithole now. Bungie would have had much more freedom with Digital Extremes that publishes Warframe.
@@ResidentRecon89 it's sad to see that all the true fans of the game that we were promised in videos like this have evaporated from the game essentially, since it's become nothing like the game we once saw. Destiny 2 is trash and caters to a young and childish demographic that doesn't require much brain power to play. The visuals and sounds are also awful once Staten and Marty left. You can really see the legacy Marty left on the first game with his incredible scores that give you that nostalgic feeling even when listening to them today.
Sad to see, and I doubt there will ever be a game like this ever again. To say that this could've been the greatest game of all time is an understatement. This game was destined for glory man...
@@haandawg Jesus christ the amount of nostalgia that blinds you, the game is still amazing and the music is probably the best OST a game has ever had, Michael Salvatori is a fucking genius, you should hear Journey or Penumbra, even the remixed OST of the planets with the darkness theme it's amazing, they always play with the motifs and make an amazing soundtrack
@@Gerkion1994 I'll give you that, Journey is a phenomenal track and it really is up there with some of the best music for the whole franchise. But I still stand by my word that Destiny 2 isn't even half of what Destiny 1 was. They didn't learn from their mistakes and they actually went backwards in many areas which was sad to see i.e. 4v4 crucible, no random rolls, microtransactions that weren't entirely cosmetic. Even the first DLC- there was so little content it should have been rendered free. I know a lot of these issues have been resolved but it was still 1 step forwards and 3 steps back which upset a lot of the fanbase, myself included. I haven't touched Destiny 2 in months and I much prefer playing Destiny 1 still. Everything about the game is fantastic and I don't know why they abandoned it entirely for Destiny 2.
So cool how they explained the merging of Sci-Fi and Fantasy artistic genres. Brilliant idea, honestly, what a team!
Man, hard to imagine this was mere months before Bungie started to make terrible decisions, perhaps this presentation happened during those events.
I will still stand on this hill: Destiny, conceptually, was and is one of the coolest IPs ever. You could tell they had passion and direction. I for one didn't mind the ambiguity and vague storyline of the finished product AT FIRST, but now that I know what it could have been if Joe was kept on the team, I just feel disappointed in Jason and Bungie Senior Management.
Here's to a fantastic IP which failed in its execution, for the most part.
Agreed. A nice mix of wonder, sci-fi and gloom, Destiny on paper was to be a insanely good franchise.
Years later, and it's still such a shame that it is now a marvel movie basically.
Hell, when they were talking about the center of the world being a city under the Traveler and said that you give people just enough detail and freedom to fill the holes with their own ideas (and added that they tend to come up with something much better) - they just affirmed something I thought about Bungie the whole time. I felt it in every Halo game - they left much for imagination and it made the game so much better.
Watching this hurt, alot.
Tears, for what could have been...
How far it's fallen. I'd give a lung to get the whole original story from Joe, and I'd give the other lung to have the original game.
as an aspiring novelist creating his own fantasy sci-fi world from the ground up, this video is golden. Love the direction Bungie is going and hope this project is a great success.

If only for Staten, this franchise would have been so different by now.
This is all Activision's fault. I'm sure of it. These are the people who created Halo, arguably the greatest video game franchise in history. They would never let us down like this unless there was heavy negative influence from, say, a greedy publishing company?
How is it Activision's fault? They only funded the game. Bungie partnered with them for the reason so as not to have the publisher interfere like Microsoft always tried to do with Halo.
Here is the true source of our problems: 32:00 *-* 34:10 .
The Science Fiction clashes with the Science Fantasy in Destiny and
often without transition or explanation.
Everything about the game is so ambiguous and vague, it confuses
players. Bungie fans are used to a rich narrative. Story telling 101 is
that you need to set boundaries and limits, rules for every element.
Like in Terminator 2, it was established that the T-1000 can't change

+HaloModder555 actually he's right. Every bit of it is activision's fault, but maybe some of it comes from the sci-fi clash. But reason being, activision takes all of this juicy content they put years into developing, take out all of the awesome details that made this game what it used to be, cut out like half the story and sell it all as DLC. Three letters that activision love.
logsterr912 That was Bungie's fault entirely. Staten and his team presented JJ and the ancients a whole story outline/roadmap for the game, and what does he do? Criticize the entire thing and tear it apart to make it less linear and more open. Staten quits soon after and JJ appoints other employees to oversee and piece the mess together. They described it as game designers doing a writer's job. They hire some no name to fix the story in the form of grimoire cards (he quits after launch). Then we had the mess Destiny is today.
Taken King comes and presents its story in a more linear fashion than before. It was more influenced by Staten's remaining team members. After Taken King's release, many of those same members left Bungie. It's a big success and praised by the community for improving on the story presentation.
Last I heard, Staten was consulting for the Game of Thrones title from his perch at MGS.
I don't know. I'm starting to think some of the foundational ideas behind Destiny were just always incompatible with compelling storytelling, like the whole shared world "a million heroes" and fuzzy visual cohesion... it's too bad. We all thought there was a game here, but the development hell probably went much further than we thought it did.
5 years later... and we know it was bungie. bungies internal clashing and incompetence ..

I still feel pissed after watching this. Damn the bungie higher ups for changing everything and damn Activision for pushing more unnecessary bs
The true flaw of destiny is that you are are surrounded by darkness, and stand as a savior of a nearly extinct civilization, yet everything feels so light. There should be a Lord of the Rings, dark/ominous vibe throughout the entire game. It should feel like you are on the edge of losing hope, not comical and cheery. As a "T" rates game, it never stood a chance, but in the future titles, it needs to feel like you got dropped into a futuristic/apocalyptic dark souls.
It was like that. They dropped it all unfortunately. That's why the guy that was on this conference left bungie after 20 years.

Not even. He went to work for MGS and the Game of Thrones game. He MIGHT end up in the subdivision of 343. Probably wouldn't have much effect. The Halo story took a 90 degree turn in the wrong direction.
They wanted to put you in a post apocalyptic world that feels like theres hope left

mikes5637 You're partially right. The stuff on the disk is unfinished. Empty maps, junk like that. Completely unusable anyway. Not like there's anything to play or equip.
I feel like Destiny has been moving away from its fantasy elements the past few years, I hope they can reignite that spark, I’d love the higher ups at bungie could patch things up Joseph Staten and maybe have him return to Destiny after he wraps Halo Infinite
After Jason Jones called for that story rewrite Staten will never ever work for Bungie again

Poor Joseph man, I really really wonder how things would've been had they not messed things up with him (just to see how everything would've turned out, for better or worse). AND if somehow, hypothetically, he was still working with the Bungie team, he wouldn't be working with the guys at 343, makes me wonder then how H: Infinite would've turned out near the end since 343 brung him on the team. Unfortunate that right now 343 seems to be struggling when it comes to needing workers, things aren't going so great. (a tad off topic, but oh well, seems Joseph can't get a break wherever he goes)
And then it launched, and there was no story, no time to explain the story and no time to explain why they didn't have time to explain.
I remember Engrams could pop DOWN in rareness
It's amazing Destiny didn't flatline in year 1 and I'm legit shocked that it ever managed to be successful.
We'll always be here.
Anyone notice on the gear sets the fourth is the TTK Vanguard and Crucible gear, and on the Warlock the 2nd helmet is the Spektar Hood.
Isn't it funny? When Joe presented the higher ups with the "super cut" of his original story vision, they complained that it was (allegedly) too messy and too complex for the players (thanks for insulting my intelligence, Bungie & Activision). Yeah, right. As if the story we got in the final games was any good AT ALL. Fuck you, Bungie & Activision. Firing Joe Staten only because you thought that your fanbase was a bunch of 6-year-olds who would rather listen to corny jokes (looking at you, Destiny 2) was the death sentence for this franchise. You tried fixing it, but now, the franchise truly is dead. Especially since Eververse is now basically the endgame. Give me a fucking break.

Jeez, after watching this again after release it's apparent that we got a husk of a game.
I can't even take in the massive magnitude of this game. It is not an open world, its an open solar system. The idea of a mythic futuristic world(s) where you can just get in your ship and fly anywhere has to be the most appealing thing for a video game. I get the feeling this game will break new grounds.
You did build a world that mattered.. Unfortunately all that hard work was scraped when Activision watered down what could of been one of the most inspiring games ever.

The planet backdrop, the lighting, the colors, everything in that picture is extremely similar to what I dreamed. It had this lonely yet hopeful and inviting look. All that would be missing is the exploration of mysterious and dangerous alien worlds with a feeling of grandeur, mystery and danger to them. The stuff of dreams!

Maybe if we gave them another year, destiny could have turned out like this breath taking concept art. Another year could have let them focus on story (although I believe they should have not even made a story, so you could make your own given some backstory.
