@@grizzlygrizzle I wonder if any animal behaviorists have weighed in on this video. To me it's super obvious that the otter has had some prior playful interaction with either domesticated dogs, wild canid puppies, or some other non-otter species; otherwise he would have given up after the first dozen play solicitations were rejected by the doe. I'm also guessing that otter play styles are similar to dogs' -- he keeps soliciting play with the "here's my tummy" move, and if she takes even a single step toward him, he pops up and yells "Now we chase!" and runs away. I think if he put in enough time, he'd eventually train her to chase him, but she seems like a slow learner. We can't all be as smart as otters!

Otter so cute....wants to play so bad & the Mamma Deer is cautious but seems intrigued a bit by silly otter because she could run away with her babies but instead keeps near & watching the entertaining otter...LOL
This is how otters lure their prey into an ambush. There are more otters hiding ready to pounce once the the bait otter grabs one of the fawns. The mother deer is on to the ploy and isn't going to let the hungry otter and his pals get close enough to grab one of her fawns. This otter isn't playing.
I love the way the little otter sort of waddles around. The kids are dying to play with their new friend but the Mommy isn't so sure. "You otter be careful!", she says.
Only an otter can get this close to a mother doe with babies and not provoke so much as even one cautionary hoofstomp from the mother..... It almost looks like the mom was gonna play for a moment there. Pretty impressive!🦌🦡
Once, while hunting, I came across a family of river otters playing in a small creek in the mountains of Washington State. Rather than hunt, I spent 3 hours just watching them play. It was a real life Disney movie in front of me. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!
This is what I'm seeing. Otter sees fawns and thinks they're play-sized. Mother deer intercedes repeatedly. Otter rolls in a "don't step on me" sign. It becomes a game for the otter, a confusion for the doe.
it is predator behavior. Similar to this other member of the weasel family ruclips.net/video/ODEUK5sB5vE/видео.html There is a reason we never trust weasels. They are tricky little predators.
I'm far from a animal behaviorist, but, maybe, the otter had been to this yard before and found a "friendly" dog that played with him! Maybe! Now the otter is back and confusing the deer as its past playmate! Curiouser and Curiouser says Alice in Wonderland!
Zarah Lucree animals know their playmates, he's not confused but it definitely seems like he's playing or trying to like a dog would... he probably has or had a dog friend
Otters are playful and deer can be pretty trustworthy with things that are smaller than them and clearly not aggressive. I practically live on a deer reservation and we have seals, otters, rabbits, some friendly raccoons. A lot of them actually get along.
To those saying that Otters don't eat large animals: If you take a look at the size of the otter compared to the fawns, you'd see they're kinda the same size... The otter wasn't going for the large animal mother, it was going for her approximately otter sized babies, I mean there's no denying the fact that it is continously trying to inch its way towards the fawns with it only rolling over when the mother reacts to it. Baby deer would've been an easy kill for a seemingly adult otter, if only it would have gotten the mothers guard down. Baby deer is an easy kill for an opportunistic predator.... The parts in between 3:15 to 3:33 and 4:51 to 5:04 really gave me a suspicion about an ulterior motive from the otter. Also by 1:32 the otter is sort of charging towards the fawns but the mother quickly jumps in the way and the otter lays on its back. So to summarise: The otter isn't hunting a large animal, it's hunting babies.
It is hunter behavior certainly But that otter could even kill the mother if it got a grip on her. Otters are in the weasel family and they hunt differently, but pure carnivores. That's not playing.
Momma is so protective even though the otter keeps showing his/her belly to show he's not threatening. What an awesome place to live... an otter and deer in your back yard on the same day... WOW!
I’m so jealous, lol! I’m totally narrating in my head their conversations, lol! Like mother deer “Stay back children, I thinks it’s on that wacky weed!”
Thats precious.❤👍☺ If only humans would accept each other and our "differences" and play well with others❤👍☺ Thanks for sharing. I love it. Made my day.

The way the otter threw himself down on his back made me laugh. Probably one of the cutest videos ever. I think all of us have had a moment like that in our lives. When we can’t stop looking but we kind of want to run away.
Otter: Hi, Mama Deer! Can I play with your babies? See, I'll show you my belly to prove I'm OK. Mama deer blocks him, stands between him and her babies. She ain't buyin' it; her babies are more important than "playtime." She's being a good mama.
What a beautiful video. The name is a bit misleading though. The otter wanted to play. The mother deer wanted nothing more than to protect her babies from what she mistakingly perceived as a threat! Notice how she was sure to keep herself between the otter and her babies at all times. Had the otter gotten a little more frisky, I believed the playful thing would have gotten hooved by mom.

Have to agree. This otter was up to no good. As much as you want to attribute human characteristics to animal behavior it would be too much a risk for the doe. Just like the photo of a polar bear with his paw around a husky in a bond of friendship-turned out to be his lunch
Mama deer is wise to keep her distance. Animals that behave uncharacteristically often are rabid. It's quite possible that the otter was simply up for a good game of tag, but Mama was playing it smart.
True! This is probably not the first otter she's ever seen, since their territories obviously overlap, but it looks like this is the first time she's seen an otter act like this! Otherwise, she would have made up her mind more quickly whether to run away with her fawns, chase the otter out of the yard, or just turn her back on it and ignore it. She keeps sniffing it (from a few feet away); I wonder if she's trying to smell whether there's some sort of disease or intoxication at play (no pun intended!) It's interesting that the otter is soliciting play mainly from her and not her fawns; maybe she was his playmate before those weird polka-dotted mini-deers came out of her belly! (Although that wouldn't explain the sniffing.)
Mama deer was having none of it. Watch how vigilantly she stays between the otter and her babies. Good and loving mama! That otter was far too persistent to just be playing. It was definitely after the babies.

What a great interspecies communication. Otter seems only interested in play, but can tell that the doe is trepidatious. So in his frenzied, goofy antics, he continually flips over and show his belly every time he’s near her. Even though the otter is no threat (and keeps reminding her so) the mama deer is having none of it. “You see children, that is why we stick to our own kind. Those otters just can’t take anything seriously.”

@@SykingAmerica... Hi Wayne... He or she was a little smaller than the one in the Video... And was playing a "Catch me if you can" type game, mixed w/ a little Cat and Mouse Game!!😍🤗😙... Very Frollicy and bouncy!!!😍
And Sooo Cute and playful, like a Puppy... It would run towards me like a long lost Dog coming home... Then get just within reach... and Dart the other direction!!!.. LOL!!!🤣... This went on over an hour!!...
I sat on My shirt in the grass trying to get him to come to me... even tried laying down to look less threatening... But he'd just run circles around me... just out of reach!!... Sometimes at Mach 5 speeds... Then he'd stop and collapse from exhaustion... Again... just out of reach!!😞...
I could tell, He really did want to play... But he was too nervous and finally ran down the road to the Canal that leads to the Big Lake behind our Home, After a neighbor kept yelling... "Mary... What is that"!!??... And I finally had to yell back... An Otter!!... And Zoom!!!... off he went!!😞😣...
Anyway, Years prior to this a friend of mine rescued a Baby Otter that had lost it's Mother (after she was hit by a car crossing the road!!😓😢... It too.. like a Puppy was Sooo Flippin' Cute!!!😍😙🤗... I played w/ him on a regular basis and they Truly are just like Puppies!!!😍... And Truly AMAZING Precious Creatures!!!😍🤗😙
Eventually she released it in the Canal behind her Home and it visited regularly and even brought her Babies to Visit!!!... We would catch bait fish, Snails, and Mussel Clams, etc... from local Lakes and put in a LG. Kiddie Pool to teach her Rescue Baby how to feed herself... And would do the same for her Babies!!!... "Sooo Cool"!!...
Well, I Hope this answered All your questions... Thanks for asking... And Have a Truly Blessed Day Wayne!!!💖😃😉

Haha I like your commentary!
If they could talk you nailed it lol
The mother is so protective, always ahead of her kids with a raised tail
I love how the mama deer is just like, "Seriously, dude, WTF is your deal...?"
Would be nice if you had a kiddie pool for the otter when he visits 😃
I'm had a young deer that chased the geese out of "her" pool ❗
It has been tried, but otters have teeth and don't understand the weaknesses of kiddie pools :-)
Mosquitoes
Taunja Brockway 80th Thumbs up and that’s a great idea 💡
Haha then he would never leave lol 😆😂
Otter ONLY wants to play, REALLY adorable creatures, fun watching!💖 Such innocent precious animals!😍
The otter gets an A-1 for effort!
Deer: “This one is definetly not like the otters”
Hell no, BEST JOKE ALERT
🤗😁
"Otter plays while deer watch". There was no convincing mama to play, but she seemed curious, while staying between otter and babies. Adorable.
Yes, she wasn't sure what to think lol But she didn't bolt off, it was a good learning experience for all of them : )
She had that tail twitching...She was definitely on alert.
"Back off, water weasel!"
"Hey, I just wanna play!"
That little is trying so hard to be those deers playmate.
Zarah Lucree Or he thinks all animals act the same.
Otters are playful and deer can be pretty trustworthy with things that are smaller than them and clearly not aggressive. I practically live on a deer reservation and we have seals, otters, rabbits, some friendly raccoons. A lot of them actually get along.
Zarah Lucree I agree: the otter knows it can play there.
Le9endary Nine how lucky are you?that would be amazing
To those saying that Otters don't eat large animals:
If you take a look at the size of the otter compared to the fawns, you'd see they're kinda the same size...
Otters eat fuckin fish ???? Lol
Momma is so protective even though the otter keeps showing his/her belly to show he's not threatening. What an awesome place to live... an otter and deer in your back yard on the same day... WOW!
I wish i was half as social as this otter.
That is a great video to see first thing in the morning 😊 Thanks for sharing, I'm still smiling!
I’m so jealous, lol!
I’m totally narrating in my head their conversations, lol!
Like mother deer “Stay back children, I thinks it’s on that wacky weed!”
This has the same awkwardness as when a slightly slushed bloke approach a group of women he doesn’t know in.the bar
Thats precious.❤👍☺ If only humans would accept each other and our "differences" and play well with others❤👍☺ Thanks for sharing. I love it. Made my day.
Mama stands in front of her fawns to protect them. Adorable!
Lol that otter wants to play SO BAD.
he is hunting
Sweet baby otter. It wanted to play. Unfortunately for the otter, mama's are so protective of their babies.
not a baby though....who knows what it wanted. Why so far from water? Fawns are a bit big for its usual prey.
Deer are stupid anyway, the otter can do better 🤣
Fawns are cuter

@@archaeologyteensyoungadult4477 That was typical weasel family predator behavior. The stoat is even better at it. ruclips.net/video/ODEUK5sB5vE/видео.html That mother was right to be wary. The otter was trying to eat the deer fauns.
This should have 10M views.
Playfulness is the embodiment of GENIUS
Momma is trying to protect her babies, but otter just wants to play...so cute
And who are these people with otters and deer in their backyard? What the!
IKR?
I was wondering the same thing...Where in the world you have deer and otters at the same place?????
I saw a walrus and a rhino playing in my yard one time. Very cute uwu
@@dutchseawolf Vancouver Island where this is filmed has the highest density deer population in North America and probably otters as well
Life in the Northwest
Otters are awesome. If you ever meet one at a party, don't walk away. Otters are very entertaining.
Deer "Oh Deer, this otter otta be crazy" Otter " You otta love me deer"
It's an old otter trick, you play cute then grab a baby deer, head for the pond and eat for a week. Good thing mama wasn't buying it.
When you're trying to make friends with other kids but their parent is being a stuck up snob.
What a beautiful video. The name is a bit misleading though.
The otter wanted to play. The mother deer wanted nothing more
than to protect her babies from what she mistakingly perceived
as a threat!
Notice how she was sure to keep herself between the otter and
her babies at all times.
Had the otter gotten a little more frisky, I believed the playful thing
would have gotten hooved by mom.
conrad b She was really curious about the otter tho
Otters are so playful.
THIS IS PRECIOUS!!!! So beautiful!
Made me smile. Thank you for sharing!!!
What a privilege to see interaction like this in your garden even if it didn't turn out as the otter hoped because mum was so protective. I could watch this all day.
This is really a beautiful video!! The Otter knows the surroundings...eg hides in cubby house...appears friendly..wants to play with deer who definitely is concerned for her bubs..Otter probably has encountered humans before...ood..The humans were kind-- the Otter overcame natural wary instinct.!! Thank you..whoever set this up..It really shows the magic of the animal kingdom..~~
Nooooo... the otter wants a MEAL.
@@oldyellerschannel4676 oh BS! It wanted to play! And was totally submissive to let the deer know that was all it wanted! Which is way cool
@@tamradawn1732 learn your facts love. Aside from being cute, they can be vicious killers. It's very possible that the otter WAS trying to get one of the babies.

The otter is just like a dog, rolling over exposing his belly, but mama doe just isn't having it. He has to win her over first.
very similar to martens, weasels - prancing one moment, next they have they prey by the throat
Otters are smart. Hes not playing.. Hes sizing up dinner!
Nah! Rolling over, exposing belly, running around, and peeking out of bushes and playhouse show s/he was trying to get a game going.
How the mother naturally puts the barrier up in shielding ....the otter however just wants fun
marten/mink could kill prey 3 times their size. mother deer is right to be cautious
Smart mom. She clearly doesn't trust water-weasels.
very similar to martens, weasels - prancing one moment, next they have they prey by the throat
That otter wanted to eat those Babies. If mom hadn't been there he would have. Otters are brutal
@@philomalley1510 I have yet to see an otter taking down a deer and eating them.
Lol
Oh Deer. How otterly gorgeous...😁
You did that on purpose, don't try to weasel your way out of it...😊
Aww the otter was so cute + just wanted to play but Mama deer kept getting between to protect her adorable twin babies. How adorable, thanks for sharing

this was a super cute video, so glad you were able to film this attempt at interaction. that otter did everything possible to let momma deer know it was safe and just wanted some friends to play with......it was so obvious in the way the otter kept exposing it's belly. thank you so much for sharing this. I loved it.
Otters are the cutest thing but that Otter want to eat venison. Anyone that thinks otherwise is kidding themself.
Shows you how advanced they are as hunters. Trying to lure the deer in close to it could attack.
Similar things doing martens when they hunting rabbits.
public displays of otter indecency
That otter is not trying to play with the deer. That otter is perfectly capable of eating one of those fawns.
Otters don't eat deer, dogs or humans. They eat fish, lizards, shell fish and amphibians. They will attack a mammal if they feel threatened or their pups are threatened but they won't eat a mammal. I am a state licensed wildlife rehabilitator. We have to know the diet of all our patients.

Boy you could sure see how momma was very protective of her young. Mr. Otter just wanted to play though. Loved the video, thanks for showing us ❤️...
Oh no, I want one now. That is one of the most adorable things I've ever seen, like a giant ferret. Poor thing is trying so hard, but mom just doesn't get it.
Today I learned otters are great at charming friends...
Not true , the hind positions herself firmly between the playful otter and her twins. No way will she let it interact with her babies!
Over a decade ago I had a spiritual experience where I recognized three symbols: A Winding Forest Path, A Polar Bear Mom and Cub, and an Otter..... I recognized the path at Oswald West State Park on the Oregon coast, the bear as my friend John, and the otter as myself. This video makes me want to play, just like the otter. What a special thing to capture on video! Thank you for posting.
