8:02 Fun Fact: that basket is actually an art tribute to the course called Iron Maiden, not the 1st disc golf basket ever. It often confuses people. All the original baskets have been swooped up (i.e in garages & living rooms across Los Angeles 😅) and are no longer on the premises.
It really upsets me that there’s no coverage of the Wintertime Open on RUclips anymore. I used to look forward to that coverage every year. Not only is it one of my favorite courses but it was always a sign that the season was about to start soon again
@@from_fresno2443 I’m always busy doing things for disc golf in Fresno, Spider-Man. Like the event at the fairgrounds last November. It took nine months of full time work and planning to make that happen. The fact is I know people that played the Wintertime Open last year. They said there was a crew there filming the lead card. They just never did anything with the footage. I’ve been told that no one cares about this tournament anymore because Mcbeth and the other top pros don’t play it anymore but I love this course. If there’s footage why not post it for those of us that would watch? It doesn’t cost anything.
Got curious about the old course and happened onto this video. I'm 67 and began playing there shortly after it opened. I left the state in the late '70's and haven't been back to this course. Good to see it still has the old charm. My city just added a course to the park right next to my house so I've started playing again. The throwing skills are still pretty sharp but my distance throwing has waned a bit over the last 50 years. 😂
What a blast from the past happening across this video. I worked in and around that area when they put the highway through and the side road wanting to create a recreational area. The side road had a wide designated bike lane then folks had the wild idea of putting in a Frisbee golf course. The revised baskets for the course were intended to be vandal proof thus the sturdy post deeply set in concrete, heavy chains and solidly welded basket and halo that could withstand somebody standing on it.
This is my home course! In Pasadena California near JPL NASA. And if you run into an employee there ask em if they work outside or deep inside the mountain lol you'll love their reaction.
Great job, looked really fun. I rode my Honda Goldwing out from Affton, Mo to Riverside in April 2017, and I wanted to play the course before riding through Death Valley. Motel owner in Riverside told me to " leave after 9a.m. " to avoid traffic getting to Oak Grove , but alas, traffic still was a nightmare anyway, so I bailed off to ride the Angeles Crest Highway instead. Hope to play it some day...
You should look into Brahan Springs course in Huntsville Al it's one of the top "first" courses. One of the best courses I love if every time I play it
I swear, Casey you need permission with whoever owns the "anonymous" face mask to use their image and your face on tshirts and discs. When ur smiling, you match it perfectly!
Nice to see you back at the OG. I agree it’s a bummer they don’t play the spider basket. It’s iconic and still up sometimes, but they haven’t used it in the WTO the past two years. 😢
ah nice day at the og, i see they are spraying the barium and mercury mist overhead for the benefit of all ....they are spraying here today in albany ny....
If I was a betting man, based on the timing of this video… my guess is that your tournament was in the rain? We have an unusual amount of rain here this year
Noooo that is not an original basket...it was made on a dare by a golfer that did rod iron fencing back in the day, who has since passed. Trust me OG has been my course since 1988. We as a club really must place an Mach 1 basket in that spot.
A form of disc golf was played in 1926 in Bladworh Saskatchewan Canada. See, History of Disc Golf in Canada. It was regularly played on this course. California has the first official disc golf course. Good on ya, all you disc golf players of the past. Cheers from 🇨🇦
@@craigcampbell1843 I agree but the game had to have a start with what equipment they had on hand. Similar to the early days of basketball. A large fruit basket was used at first, the they cut the bottom out so the ball would fall thru. That also was invented in Canada.
@@danhei I don’t hear anyone saying Pasadena is the first place or time in history that anyone ever played any kind of game similar to what we now know as disc golf. Just that it’s the location of the first official disc golf course. I used to throw things through the air when I was a kid. I’m sure kids have always done that for centuries. People in New England were throwing upside down pie tins around for fun in the 1940s which is what inspired Ed H. but that doesn’t mean any of us should get credit for inventing the actual frisbee.
So I'm talking to a random co worker about playing disc golf.. another worker chimes in. "OH yeah, I used to play that with my girlfriend in California in the 70s" Turns out this guy played oak grove in 78, and I'm standing there mind boggled he had played on the 1st course ever, and I'm giddy wishing that was me.
Love the new logo 🔥🔥🔥 You made your signature form when you’re putting (which many people made fun of) into part of your logo, that’s what I’d call owning it! ⛳️🥏❤️

Get a camera and make it happen Cap'n next year, be there or be square
CRAIG!!!
No one wants to play in the cold though
@@trialfail right. Because SoCal is famous for it’s cold winters. Lol
@@trialfail you saw the video right? It’s Pasadena. They’re all playing in tshirts.

That's funny. I used to play Frisbee golf at that park when I was in highschool. I'll be 60 in a couple of weeks.😂 Good luck this week 👍

Welcome to the neighborhood Casey! Pop up to Santa Barbara and play Cachuma Lake. It is absolutely gorgeous right now.

I’ve only gotten to play this course a handful of times but it’s one of my favorite in the state. You can feel the history when you play there.
This looks fun. I bet if you asked, you could find Stockley's sig. 😆

Yep, I played the Winter Time Open last year, hoping for the spider hole, and they moved it. Didn't play this year.
I played this course last year, it was fun. Congrats on the top 10 finish!
Awesome to meet you out at my home course! Hope those FD3s fly well for you!!
Are you going to play the second oldest in huntsville al? It's one of my favorite courses
Cool to see you on a course I play quite often. Good luck this season!
Come to Huntsville and play Brahan (2nd oldest course). Id love to see someone put it on RUclips now.
Pendleton King in Augusta Georgia predates chains and is still there.
Thanks

I’m sure many creative people “played” disc golf at different times. Oak Grove is the first ever course with baskets.
