  • Well, we have replaced all the worn and suspect parts in the transmission including all steel and friction clutch plates, the intermediate band, the sprag clutch rollers and springs, the govenor and front pump rings, the front pump gear set, all thrust washers and the modulator valve. We have also replaced all rubber seals for the servo pistons, as well as the forward clutch and reverse/high clutch pistons, as well as the shuttle valves inside the valve body. The torque converter required replacement on account of water damage from storage and the input shaft was missing, so a suitable replacement was sourced. There was considerable evidence that the transmission had been meddled with in the past, with some satisfactory repairs, as well as some less than desirable ones. The absence of a valve body gasket, a rock hard forward clutch inner o ring which broke in a few places on removal and the piece de resistance; a broken spring retainer on the line coasting boost valve, which had metal fragments broken off from where the retainer had been forced in (presumably with a hammer). The spring was half poking out as well. I couldn't remember what the end play was during the video, but I'd written it down at the time of checking and it was 1.68mm!
Anyway, this is a long video at an hour, so I hope you enjoy!

The amount of parts you need to keep track of is staggering!

By no means overhauling an automatic transmission is an easy task!
You've got very good knowledge and skill of a typical specialist mechanic for sure!

Thanks for the great rebuild videos on the C4 transmission Peter.
You couldn't have posted them at a better time as I'm about to rebuild a pan fill for an upcoming project.

Another great video. Thanks. I understood more of that than I thought I would. But nowhere enough to do it myself.

Wow this brings back memories for me, all bad though😂😂😂
I was apprentice fixing this junk and unfortunately I was good at it then progressed to the BTR 4 speeds, 22 years later I’ve never done it again…..
Luckily I’ve forgotten most of it too…..
    Good luck Peter….

I love this junk though haha... I'm not very experienced, but have had some success with these transmissions. I remember doing a recall on the 85LE 4 speeds they used in the later EA's... the valve bodies were full of swarf! Cheers

That 3 tang washer you had left over is for the front of the rear planet. Yours is an early uses the thinner washer which you fitted correct, as rear planet has the raised edge. Later are flat and use that spare washer you have

Thanks for the video Peter. I was looking forward to it.
Love the long videos too by the way.
All the issues you found in it, I wonder how it performed during it's last tenure in a car.
I also wonder by having no gasket in the valve body plate how this would've affected its operation.
Man, it was built by Dodgy Bros Inc I reckon.
Now it's got the Peter Anderson stamp of approval !
    Great work Pete.
Can I ask who your parts supplier was ?

Pan fill is definitely c10 and case fill are c4 and c9 , another one to tell them apart is c10 the bell housing bolts to the case and the c4 and c9 the bell housing bolts up with the pump 😉

As far as l know it’s an Aussie thing… it’s an American transmission and all the literature refers to both models as C4 case and pan filled… whatever the case all good

yeh c4 and c10 are basicly the same, it is an ozzy thing, C6 is the big box

you are supposed to use vasoline, not grease

    • @PeterAndersons
      @PeterAndersons  3 месяца назад

Snow white petroleum jelly is preferable to vaseline, as it doesn't have unnecessary additives. The grease I used is purpose made for automatic transmissions, cheers.
