I think Janiah Barker to UCLA is huge for her and the Bruins. She already is Uber talented and can play both forward positions. There's no one on UCLA or even in the country except for Lauren Betts that has a higher ceiling than Janiah Barker in terms of the WNBA. Although Barker hasn't shown much progress in her growth as a player from when she first arrived at Texas A&M, it's because of Joni Taylor and her Coaching staff in my opinion. That staff underachieved at Georgia and received a life line in Aggie Land. At UCLA Janiah will have 3 things that will propel her. First a Coach in Cori Close that has a good track record of developing WNBA talent and will help her with shot selection. Secondly a dominant big in Lauren Betts who demands the double teams leaving her free as a shooter, slasher or to crash boards on offense; plus use her speed and run the court on leak outs. And third she's going to have better guards in KiKi Rice, Charliss Ledger Walker and Londynn Jones who know how to play make not just for themselves but also for others. This could really launch her much higher than many people feel right now as she learns how to play off of other players. Remember she makes USA teams right now just on her talent; a 6'4 player with tremendous athleticism, speed, and quickness. She's versatile, tough and has the ability to put the ball on the deck. I'm not a UCLA fan, I'm a Women's Basketball fan; the Bruins with Barker can be scary good by the time the tournament rolls around next season.
Okay, as a big Bruin fan, I will give you my take on the latest addition to the family, Janiah Barker. I don't think she'll make a big difference. The Bruins are already loaded with bigs. I was hoping they'd bring in a guard or two, although that's still a possibility as they have at least 2 or 3 scholarships to give. The losses of Sontag and Bessoir are minimal because neither one played much last year. Iwuala was a descent back up to Betts, but they have plenty of help coming in and returning to replace Iwuala. As for Cori Close, it's final four this year or bust. To be fair, last year was the first year under her leadership that I thought UCLA had the talent to get there. Did anybody really expect the Bruins to beat South Carolina the previous year? C'mon man, that would've been a huge upset. Give Close a break. What previous years does anybody believe that she had the talent to get to the final four? Be honest.
Yep tend to agree with all of this. The only thing that worries me is that last year it felt like UCLA got worse as the season went along which is a worry IMO
This coming season will be the second year of the Bruins having a great post player as the number one option. Betts' teammates who played in a heavy guard orientated offense the year prior to Lauren getting there had to adjust their games to the new philosophy of inside-out from the old outside-in approach. Continuity should be much better this year for the Bruins.
I think Cori Close is safe; I mean she got to the elite eight right and she's been incredible in recruiting the transfer portal and high school. Players in this modern era are largely choosing schools based on who's going to be coaching them as a deciding factor. Players enter the transfer portal either following either a Head Coach or an Assistant Coach. Whoever it is, it's usually for the most part someone they and their advisors (Family/AAU Coaches) have built up a relationship with during the recruiting process. Getting rid of Coach Close and the staff she's assembled now could disrupt UCLA'S progress.
There was a debate over who deserved to be ranked higher, UConn or Notre Dame. Most would pick the Huskies but a case could be made for the Irish. Of course we know Paige is Paige and one of the best, if not the best in the country. But after multiple injuries we don't know how good Fudd will be and like you said she'll be brought back slowly and may not ever realize her full potential in college. So much of UConn's ranking is based on potential, Sarah Strong looks like she will have a huge impact but she's still a freshman. We don't know how well El Alfy will replace Edwards. For me, give me the proven trio of Olivia Miles, Hannah Hidalgo and Sonia Citron. Plus Westbeld may have her faults but she's a 5th year senior who was one of the ACC's best and most improved. Plus there's the transfers: the ACC's most improved player Laitu King (18.7 ppg 10.3 rpg last season) and Liza Karlen from Marquette (17.7 ppg 7.9 rpg) will be accepting roles as supporting players for the Irish. And they have the Class of 2024's best post player coming in Kate Koval.
@pam_and_eggs Well, UCLA has two guards in their new recruiting class, but the recruits from Sidwell Friends aren't guards. The guards are Avary Cain and Elina Aarnasalo from Finland. I just don't know if one or both of them will have an immediate impact. Kiki Rice and Londyn Jones are their only other guards, I believe, so I'd still like to get another guard in the portal, like Dominika Paurova from Oregon State, who is still available.

Do us a favor stay off the page. Pretty sure he will use more than seven if everybody stays healthy. The last few years he barely could dress seven and putting in who he did have on the bench was not much help. If the guards stay healthy he probably goes 9-10 players. Then come tournament time you may see that shrink a player or two.
Does it make any difference? UCLA will still not make the Final Four as long as Kori Close is the head coach. Stop attempting to jinx UCONN on the injury front:) So is MN Lynx beating Las Vagas tonight or what?:)
