Another awesome vid. I'm at that advanced beginner/intermediate stage and the tip about having fun is so important. The other thing I've found is that often I paddle out and get a great first wave of the session. Then it seems that things go wrong, I can't get on waves, I don't take off well etc... So my other top tip is: don't over think it! Relax, enjoy it, have fun. Kia kaha and aroha Australia.
I agree. Surfing is very mental too if you wipe out a few times it can really affect your confidence and your overall surf session if you don't reset yourself and see where you went wrong to catch a wave and get back in the rhythm.
Agreed ! It is advantages to hear from other beginners who have taken to knowledge and skills you have taught them and they post their experiences and their own observations . Truly uplifting to other newcomers like myself ..end of day moto : have fun , dont give up
Thanks for posting! Getting better at surfing can seem daunting, but it is so helpful to have it broken down. And always important to remember that surfing is fun even when our skills aren't where we wish they were!
Hey Ryan, thanks for posting this. I am now at a similar place to Brad. The best things to help me have been; enough volume, and correct break to be at. I am now doing many things better, and having a blast. You guys have helped me a ton. Prayers for NSW, ( I have been there), and all of Australia.
Hey Jim, they are definitely some key areas which make a huge difference. Stoked to hear you are loving it, please keep us informed with your progress!
You guys have such sorted vids. The best on youtube imo. the music, explanation, tactics... you put it into words well and make it look so so easy! Im easily popping up on a 9ft foamy and catching waves. I recently went to a 7ft mini-mal style in epoxy. Mostly because I carry the board in the streets of Lima, Peru. Im paddling it just fine but im not able to so easily find the sweetspot as with the Long board. Any tips?
Every board is different Rocky, more time spent on it will help. You could even practice paddling it on flat days, just to get some practice in.Thanks for your feedback
Finally a legit beginner. Guy is riding a great board. 6'8, 40L. That board looks like a ''typical shortboard'' under his arm too.Any idea his height/weight?
Great video boys ,really enjoyed the latest as I myself and surfing again and working on pop up and correct waves to choose ,really good video learnt heaps from it . Keep it coming .....
Being a big bloke and 120 kilos struggling to catch waves , but have the surf bug again after years of not surfing. , brought a 7’”6 McCoy surfboard 58 litres slowly but gradually trying to stand up and getting waves . Having a hip replacement and 120 kilos is a challenge but hopefully gain to work harder on pop ups and across the wave on a angle and trimming the wave is my goal and loosing 20 kilos and be able to go on a surf trip with my mates in two years in Indo or Sri Lanka ..... love RIP RUclips videos, was thinking of also buying a soft board 9 foot like Kale uses on a fun days and no waves to keep the fun of surfing and also the bug and excitement of riding or trying to ride waves ... keep up the good work Ryan and Kale love the you tube channel
Can you do a video for turning strictly, beginning and advanced tips beg and adv. mistakes, how to fix it, and not just use your heel to go left like cmon bro. How bout mistakes you made too in your progression (turns) front foot placement and angle and how it can affect your surfing as well as back foot, for backside and frontside turns. And how putting all the weight on your knees and staying light on your feet causes mass progress.. how your back foot over your front fins generate speed and over your back fins turns, how to create LEVERAGE massive tip. Not just how to move my arms and head but the real progressing tips. This is how to RIP not how to stand up on a 6’8 40L Stay up and rip tho u guys are sick but plz make some technical how to rip tutorials and analysis to up surfers games. We already got the how to pop up and paddle
great video!!! I wonder if you can help me on an issue I have regarding the take off.. I started with che back foot first and now I am pretty much good pointing the the toes. But I fell sticked on that way and I have no Idea how to progress. anytime I try to get up without touch the toes on the board I feel powerless. I suppose is not an easy process. do you have any advice?
I live in The Netherlands. The Northsea is really inconsistent. Really mushy, mostly small waves, and crowded on the places where the waves are 'good'. Do you have any tips how to progress on mushy waves?
After a few weeks? The same foamy you've been learning on. Later, say after a few *months* of regular surfing, the same kinda board that Brad use, a relatively long shortboard with high volume & a swallow or squash tail for versatility. The appropriate length and liter will depend on your height & weight.
Could you put the micropohone in front of your mouth ( regarding to your friend in front of the laptop) in your further videos ? It will be easier for me to understand whats being said. English is not my native language :< thanks !
wait what the beginner has a bunch of complaints to work on and advanced surfer just say we will discuss these things but there's no discussion just complaint and no input from advanced surfer. this being said was there a message or lesson because my eyes and ears are all your instructor.... but as for the complaints of the beginner... seems like a good list of complaints but this is instructors video and he did nothing......
I do not understand why money will fix anything when money created the issue in the first place...we should stop procreating, stop wasting so much food and buying stuff, stop the damn economy until it transforms into a sustainable thing, not continue pouring money. Respectfully and thanks for the video !
Gonzalo, I'm sure that if you lost everything in a bushfire or otherwise, except for the clothes on your back, you would appreciate some help. That doesn't' have to be money, it could be clothing, food or your time. Thanks for watching!
I really like these types of videos where a client of yours talks about their surfing. It's really informative and cool
Stoked to hear you like it Juan!
clients can or should share input but its the instructors job beat the fundamentals in your brain with constant input

Hey Andy, some great advice you have to share, thank you!
For sure Charles!
Exactly the same here, I always get a very good wave where I can feel I have improved at my beginner level, and then it's all downhill haha.
More videos like this would be great seeing peoples progression and mistakes!
Thanks Belinda, more coming!

What is the best Board for a beginner after a few weeks ? Short board or fish board with much volume ?

It's a tough question, there are many factors which influence board selection. A video coming on this shortly!
