Thank you so much for this video. You have no idea how helpful it has been and how much it helped me advance my painting. I wish you could see my final painting. It was a jaguar I painted for a gift.
Thank-you for your message, how lovely to hear this! So glad you enjoyed it. I would have loved to have seen your painting!!! XXX
Oh my gorgeous! I’ve learned so much!
Thank you so much. Glad it was helpful. Thank you for watching. Xx
This is a beautiful piece, I do consider myself a beginner at painting and your descriptions of water control are the best I've heard. I FELT it click in my head as you were explaining! Thank you for sharingand teaching us!
You are so welcome! I hope it helps on your watercolour journey. Good luck! Thanks for watching. 😘
This is a wonderful tutorial. So detailed and encouraging ❤
Thank you, what a lovely comment. Glad it was interesting. Thanks for watching 🧡🐾
Honestly Sharon, I am only halfway through this tutorial and I can tell you that never have I seen an artist so patiently take the viewers through everything stroke and show clearly the pallet and the color mixing. More importantly, you are showing us how you are effectively maintaining your water control by showing the towel that you are using to tamp off the excess water/pigment.
This is brilliant!!! Goodness, I would wish that every UTube artist would take as much time as you have! Thank you ever so much, I can't wait to return to see the completion of this beautiful work of art.
I am a very, very happy new subscriber and look forward to seeing many more of your tutorials!! 👩🦳🖌️
Thank you so very much, what a lovely comment! I do appreciate it. I’m thrilled you are enjoying it. I have lots more for you on my Channel…enjoy! 🧡
Cool
Thanks for watching! Xx
Thank you for talking about what you are doing, and explaining what you are doing. I watch many RUclips videos, and can't always follow why the artist does a step. You explain softening edges really well. I look forward to more demonstrations. Thank you Sharon.
My great pleasure! Glad it has been helpful. Thanks for watching. 🧡🐾
I have watched hundreds of hours of watercolor artists painting, but yours is the best. You go into such detail, explaining every single thing you do. And best of all, there are no commercial interruptions like some people have every five minutes, ruining our concentration. You are fantastic!
Thank you, that is so kind. I’m glad it was useful and that you enjoyed it. Sadly we don’t have much say about the ads, but as a rule, the more successful the video, the more ads… thanks for watching! 🧡🧡
Amazing the amount of detail!! It's like drawing with watercolor. I love your video because you go slowly, actually painting each step along the long, long way, explaining everything you are thinking and your reasoning for what you are doing. Thank you for taking the painstaking time to go slowly and show us exactly how you achieve such a beautiful, real-life watercolor animal. You are a fantastic artist and teacher and far surpass the other videos I have watched. I would definitely pay to attend your online class. Thank you again for thinking of the viewer/student as you made this video and demonstration.
Thank you so much, what a wonderful glowing testimonial, I am chuffed! How kind of you to take the time, I really appreciate it. Glad you enjoyed my kitty cat. 🧡🐾🐾
Sharon, this is wonderful. I'm going to give it a go. My masking fluid is thicker than yours though.. and what kind of soap do you use? I'm afraid of ruining my brush.
Hello Anna. I use any bar of soap, usually a free one from a hotel that I have visited. Just don’t use a brand called Dove as it has moisturiser in it! As long as you cover the brush well you should be OK. Try out your masking fluid first on a separate piece of paper to make sure that you can paint the lines thinly enough. I have a video about using masking fluid, would it help to watch that first? Good luck. Let me know how you get on. Here is the Masking Fluid video: ruclips.net/video/j991yqcnZhU/видео.html
I’ve watched many videos and have learned a great deal from all of them but yours is by far the most comprehensive! Thank you so much for sharing your talent and extensive knowledge of the medium. This is a game changer for me! Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦🥰
If you would like REFERENCE PHOTOS for this video, they are available on my website and you can print them off for your own use. GOOD LUCK! www.sharonhurst.co.uk/tutorials
Hi Sharon, I have just come across your beautiful painting tutorial. Do you stretch your watercolour paper as you use quite a lot of water? Thank you for sharing your lovely in-depth tutorial.
@@miriamsargent3428 hello! Nice to hear from you. No, I don’t stretch, but I do stick my paper down. Go all the way around with a good quality gummed tape. It means you have to cut your picture out with a scalpel, but it won’t cockle that way. Thanks for watching. 😀
Wow so helpful to see your process. I would love to see a dog or horse tutorial by you 😊
Thanks for your lovely comment. ❤️
I love this! Painting is my hobby and I have traditionally used oils. So, I am new to watercolor. But I am not good at painting people or animals. Recently a friend of mine has begged me to do the watercolor of their late kitty cat for his wife for their 50th wedding anniversary. I could not say no, but I am desperately scared to do this. Yours is the first watercolor tutorial that I’ve seen that really took time and showed me how to do it. Thank you so very much!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome. I hope it helps when you start you project! Good luck. Let me know how it goes! 🧡
@@SharonHurst well I have already fumbled the background so there’s that! This is not the piece where I wanted to learn by my errors, but it seems to be heading that direction. Hopefully I can get to the kitty soon!!!
What is in the small white pot you use when your applying the masking fluid? It looks lije a paste of somekind. Is the pot of blue, just paint or blue tinted masking fluid.
Hello. The white thing is a small bar of soap. I wet the brush then coat it with soap so that it is protected when I dip it into the masking fluid. The mask itself is blue tinted so that you can see it when you are using it. I have a separate video on masking fluid that you might find useful that describes these techniques properly. 🙂 ruclips.net/video/j991yqcnZhU/видео.htmlsi=dlkKZV8PvjF28ArT
Thank you so very much, one of the best tutorials I have studied 😎 for painting cats 🐈⬛ 🐈 ❤

great tutorial would love download of the cat pic to have a go at.
Sharon, any chance at all you still have the original picture reference? Pleeeeeeeze?
S'il te plaîîîîîîît?
Hello. Yes, I do. It is here on my website. Open the picture in a new window and you can then print it off. 🧡 www.sharonhurst.co.uk/tutorials/
@@SharonHurst Well, I was hoping for the original ref so I could have it in high resolution (in case you downloaded it from Splash or something). I just can't draw if I don't have a really precise reference. Too bad, but thanks anyway Sharon

Tout simplement magnifique. Bravo.
Merci boucoup! Xxxxx
This is fabulous, Sharon. I wish I had watched it before attempting my first cat painting .
Thank you dear Nuala! So glad you enjoyed it. Hugs xxxxx
What did you mix the masking fluid in, that blue tint?
The masking fluid is blue. That’s the way it is sold, makes it so easy to see.
Thank you for one of the best tutorials I’ve seen.I love the fact you go slow enough to see each detail and I’ve learned so much!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for taking time to comment. 🧡
Stunning ! ❤ can you tell us the brushes used - name - shape - number & brand . What was your smallest brush was it a liner or round ? And the small scrubbing brush what shape & number - brand - also the brand of the masking fluid ? I heard a lot of Rosemary & co for the brushes .. Also have you ever used the scratch method for whiskers & fur , do you recommend it ? Thnx
Beautiful painting! Thanks so much. Not for a beginner, that's for sure. Fortunately, I'm not a beginner, and I'm going to try to follow instructions step by step. 😁
Thanks for watching. Good luck with your painting, let me know how you get on! Xx

Is there a link for the reference photo? There are 325 pages of cats on Pixabay.
If you have a look at my comment below, you will see my link to the photo on my website. You can print it off for yourself.
@@SharonHurst thanks I did that but I was hoping for the full face reference photo but gave up looking on Pixabay after page 35.
@@lisagegare1574 oh I see! I can fully understand why you would give up with so many pages! If you wanted the rest of the face, could you trace it and turn the tracing over? That would give you the left hand side. The fur is usually symmetrical in pattern, I would follow the right hand side. 🐾
@@SharonHurst In other words you can't find it either? Do you remember who the photographer is?

What a wonderful tutorial.
I learned so much, thank you!
So glad you enjoyed it. Hope it will be helpful in future. Xxx
Great video thanks Sharon, the first watercolour demonstration that I have ever properly looked at. However, as a complete novice I was left a bit frustrated by your exploitation of the dark art of the masking fluid, and how to remove it. In the video, you demonstrate how to paint on this magical material, and then jump suddenly to “ok I have removed the masking so the next step is....” - What? How? The masking appears to remain in place over the whiskers, but plainly you removed a large area of it from the eyeball, because you subsequently painted over it. In some areas it remains on the paper, and other areas it is removed - or is it? I was feeling quite inspired to try this myself up to that point. Can you give some further clarification on how this fluid is used, because it seems to me that it’s application and removal is as important to watercolour painting as the ability to use the paintbrush itself. Please illuminate us further! ..... but it was a smashing video.
Dave Williams hello! Thanks for getting in touch. You are quite right, so many of us assume that you all know what we are doing. Many apologies. To remove it you simply rub it with your fingers. I apply mask on and off all the way through the painting. I did indeed take the main areas away here but left the whiskers until the very end. If it would help, would you like a little 10 minute video tutorial just on masking fluid? I can do that and upload it here. Let me know. 🙂
Sharon Hurst Hi again Sharon. A little tutorial on how to use masking fluid would be very useful. I did buy a bottle of masking fluid from the local art shop, but this has a thick creamy consistency that doesn’t look anything like that you were using. Are there different kinds of masking? In your opinion, which is preferable? I am sure any guidance you can give would be very useful to art novices such as myself. Thanks again.
@@SharonHurst I would love the masking tutorial ! Absolutely the best video!

@@SharonHurst I will. I found your demo so helpful, lots of useful tips which will help me when I paint. It made me realise I use too much water and don't have enough patience when it comes to drying. I've been nervous about trying masking fluid but feel I can give it a go having watched you.
