Making Fire is much easier when you use coal extenders. The common ones are punk wood, fungus, pith, many types of leaves, even char cloth and charred punk wood.
If you’ve got a weak fire maker or weak ember to make fire with, then use a coal extender. It will ignite from easily, maintain that coal on a slow burn for a long time if necessary, and then can be aerated into a large ember when you get ready to ignite your tinder bundle.
What if you have no coal extenders or all the available ones are too wet? Use my Ashed Tinder technique to make some! Any tinder that you thoroughly saturate with wood ashes will turn that tinder into a great coal extender. Let me show you using leaves, paper towel, denim , and t-shirt material.

My dear fellow fire fans, without mentioning it directly, David has given us another perfect lesson in why it’s so important to completely drown your campfires before you leave them unattended, and why a cigarette tossed from a car can lead to disaster! Ashed tinder, just like char materials, tends to keep on smoldering and burning until it is completely consumed OR a breeze blows it into flames. If there is enough material, it can continue smoldering for HOURS and spreading out until it finds the right fuel to ignite to flame with only a slight breeze for encouragement. Both the campfire and the cigarette produce their own ashes and embers that need to be fully extinguished for safety!

Your teaching inspired me to start tonight with steel, flint and char cloth. Instantly got a glow, then my tinder caught. Perfect. So I called my sons outside and said “Watch this!” Wow.
We all have a new hobby that we will use on our camping trips and outings.
Look what you started… thank you.

This video is an excellent ode to ash.
I personally learned to use ash with crumbled leaves in it.
I will try it out this winter, in the bush 🫡
Love to put myself to the test using your techniques. Be safe.

Found out completely by accident a few days ago that golden rod “blooms/fuzz” holds an ember pretty well. It was a bit difficult to put out.
