TANDEM Tractors Plowing

- Big Tractor Power is out in the field with tandem tractors. In the 1940's. 1950.s and 1960's big tractors on the farm were 30-50 hp. In this era of farming moldboard plowing was the primary tillage method and required lots of horse power. One tractor typically would pull a 2 or 3 bottom plow. Farmers looking to cover their acres faster sometimes would team there tractors together to jump from 30-50 hp to 60 to 100 hp. This pairing allowed the tractors to pull a 4 or 5 bottom plow to complete tillage work quicker. With the development of articulated 4wd tractors the need for tandem tractors went away in the late 1960's.
Tandem tractors to watch for in this video:
1. John Deere 830 Specail
2. Massey Ferguson 5200/4880 Tandem
3. Allis-Chalmers WD Tandem
4. INTERNATIONAL Farmall 560 M Team
5. Oliver 880 Tandem
6. INTERNATIONAL Farmall 400 M Team
7. John Deere Double G

I ran a tandem tractor setup back in the 1980's, It was a Minniapolis Moline in front and a Massey Ferguson behind but they were essentially the same tractor, They were the hand clutch models so on the front of the back tractor there were 4 levers the hand clutch, the throttle and two to control the hydraulics. Broke up 160 acres with a 16 foot deep tillage cultivators with spikes on it.
Very interesting. Moline built the the Massey 97 which was based in the MM G705. Sounds like a cool pair to see working ground.
The three JD's are the coolest and by far the best-coupled unit I have ever viewed. Great video
Quite a beast!

I absolutely loved that double Oliver. Absolutely awesome how they made it into an articulated 4wd.
Always enjoy Renners videos. Hopefully I can see it in person some day. It would be a really good time. Thank you Jason 👍🏻
The 400/M unit brought back a lot of memories! I ran the same on many acres, pulling a 21 ft kewannee disk back in the late 60's.
Great video.
My favorite is the double G you showed last.
Unique sound.
I have a 49 G.
Very nice. The G was a big tractor in its day. I always enjoy getting to see a G at a plow day.
They knew how to upgrade the equipment back in the day😉👍 that 830 looks great👍👍
They were all impressive but the Double G really impressed me being built in 1953. Wow!
I’ve been around tractors and row crop farms for 66 years and I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this!!! Pretty amazing
It is neat seeing the tractors paired. Once 100 hp row crop tractors and 145 hp 4wds hit the market in the mid 60’s the tandem tractors began to go away.
How I never came across your channel before I have no idea. These machines bring back memories of my days as a little fella riding in my grandpas lap in his Oldsmobile. I sure do like seeing these old tractors still doing what they were built to do, even if it's just for demonstration. I'd make the drive just to see these great ole machines do their thing and smell that freshly turned dirt. I'll be going back and watching your previous video's and I'll be looking for the new ones! Thanks for the work behind these video's you put in. Hope y'all have yourselves some great holidays! Plus one new sub.
Growing up in suburbia on the edge of farmland, I saw a lot of then modern equipment, and Dad growing up on a farm bought me the die-cast stuff, Granddad farmed small acreage, horses at first, always wanted a '48 Cub, I bought one to restore, having just 8x8 garden and in the city, now I have 5 acres 4 hours away to build a shop to restore it, nostalgia will due that. Keep up all the videos, reminds me of home, childhood, and Dad, gone this year. Thank you!
The JD triple and the Oliver double are liked overhere! Thnx a lot! T🐻 from NL.
Very brilliant, even back in the day, i grew up on a dairy farm, south of RockFalls,Illinois I will never forget the way i grew up, or change it 👍
Congratulations on the content Jason. I really like to see these rarities still active.
It’s exciting to capture and share this history. Definitely not something seen today just out in the field.

The triple John Deere is an impressive engineering feat using low cost tractors. The articulated oliver was cool too.
These Guys amd women. To often taken for granted. Smartest people in this country
Jason the two JD G's made the best sound ever
At the country fair near where i live, someone had a Minneapolis-Moline GBD tandem. Very interesting setup given the miniscule number of US tractors here in the uk.
Minneapolis-Moline is kind of limited here spending on the region. Very cool to see a tandem in the UK.
There were a few of those contraptions built over here in Aus as well, remember seeing one when I was a lad. Good video, nice to see something a bit different from the good old days. Regards from Down Under.
Thank you for watching. I am always honored to have viewers in other parts of the world. The tandem tractors are near to see. I think there is three paired Chamberlin tractor in Australia.
My dad ran two John Deeres up in Montana. When I went to the old farm 30 years later, they were still in the front yard, but didn't run. I like the second tractor on a hitch, that way you still had the front tractor for smaller jobs
Those are really cool 😎
Outstanding!
I likes the double G with the outa tune motors that was cool
My dad used a DC case and a 400 case. We had a chain in between them with a 3 bottom plow. Plowing a field that was 1/2 mile long. it seems to take for ever to get a little done. That was about 50 some years ago
That’s neat. I remember seeing a rig like that sell about 10-12 years ago that had two Farmall M’s. I think both tractors were stuck and the articulation joint frame got scrapped. At least one of the tractors got fixed up and made into a pulling tractor. Thanks for sharing!
Neat to know a tandem was still around. Too bad it was let go to run down.
@@bigtractorpower are all those rigs totally home built, or did some company offer a sub frame that you could buy to put two tractors on? I thought several of them in the video looked kind of similar.
@@rosstheoliverman I do not know. You would think there would be a kit to help make it easy. Although the Great Depression era farmer was making the purchasing decisions during this time period so they may have opted to build the connection them selves to save money.
@@bigtractorpower it would be interesting to see if there was a popular mechanic’s article on it. They had lots of ideas on how to repurpose farm equipment.
Interesting video Sir. Next time you go to a plowing show could you measure how deep their plowing ?
There is definitely some interesting setups right there.
Each one is a little different. They were much more common place at one time.
@@bigtractorpower farming back then was the real deal too. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos from you. Keep them coming
Video molto bello, macchine veramente speciali.
Bella manifestazione. 🚜💪👍👍👍
Thank you for watching. 😁👍
Farmers are my biggest Heros they know how to make it happen. Make do with what they have.
Beautiful soil!
I am amazed that the plows hold up to the amount of force .
The 400 and the M was a nice setup, my grandfather had both, only, the 400 was not a wide front, a trike. Interesting setup.
Farmall tractors were built to last a life time. The nice your grandfather had an M and a 400.
Great video
Any tractor paired double or triple is interesting. It gets the job done.i like the Earthquake, it is very similar to the Big Bud tractor.
They are neat tractors for sure.
Fun video for a Thanksgiving morning!
😁👍👍. That was my goal. Happy Thanksgiving
Nice video jason! Thank you
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy Thanksgiving. I need to get up your way again to see the FW.
Amazing
Great video! I have a neighbor with a Deere 70 and 720 paired up.
Very cool combo.
I remember those. A lot of farms use to call them double headers.
Hello! Oldies paved the way...
They sure did. It is great to see a few still running.
@@bigtractorpower 👌
When farmers were ahead of manufacturing.
My favorite was the john deere 830 special.I saw it in action at Renner Stock farm
Great video. Happy Thanksgiving to and all your family and friends.
Happy Thanksgiving
Growing up I remember reading an article in a Canadian national farm magazine (Country Guide) about tandem tractors. That would be back in the mid-60s. It's great to see that there are still some around, it is a part of history that needs to be saved!
Very cool. Thank you sharing. Sounds like a good article to read.
Good day Albert Jagt. Yes I remember Country Guide, I don.t remember twin tractor, I think if would have seen them I would have remember. I am from Ontario. Thanks
Farmers are true geniuses
That they are.
That John Deere 830 combo is about the best looking one I've seen. With the cab and all, it's obvious much thought and effort went in to building it.
The 830 Special is a cool tractor. I filmed a ride along in the cab to show how it operates. I will post that video in December.
Q.bonitoes.eltrabajo.de.ecampo.admiroes.jentetrabajadra
The 830 is the best sounding aswell
👋 hey 👋 from Dexter,Missouri
Another excellent tractor video
Thank you for watching.
M Farmal ,log chain, car tire"for cushion" tied to 1939 Oliver 80, 3-16 plow ,10 yr alfalfa field ,9 ft roots, dad & me on lead 12 yr old, now 77. Memories. THX Jason
Wow what a plowing team. That must have been quite the plowing and disking job.
@@bigtractorpower Well my dad yelled a lot to get a rhythm going, the air was blue ,my ears burning!!
I like the Allis combination. We had a neighbor who had one like it. Eventually they built an Allis 7060 and 7030 combination.
Wow a 7030/7060 tandem would be cool to see. Did the tractors have duals?
We had a Farmall M we pulled 3-14” with all the time. If it would pull it in 1st gear, it would pull it in 4th gear, is was a good tractor!
The M is one of the greatest tractors of all time.
too much fun to watch !! i have retirement work at home .... bizzy watching kkooooooooooooool tractors 😅🤣
In 1962 I start putting two tractors together and making a tandem hitch. I had a John Deere 70 tractor and an old John Deere a tied together. I also picked corn with a new idea corn picker with the two tractors I plowed ground I disced ground.
Video top 💪💪💪👍👍👍👌👌👌
Usually not to interested in pairing up tractors but really enjoyed this video. I noticed the farmall 560 had an M paired with it and the farmall 400 had an M paired with it. Those Ms must work with about anything.
The M was built to last a life time. The first M’s are in over 80 now. In the paired tractors the M would have been the big tractor on the farm then a newer model like the 400 or 560 was added.
Syncronize two equal tractors for me is possible but the different Farmall 300 and IH 560? I bet Transmission is not same, top engineerin imo.
Very interisting footage, thx for sharing BTP!
I wish I had the opportunity to talk with each owner to go over how they hooked them together. I do have a video on how the three 830s work.
Nice 👍👍👍 Indonesian likes 🇮🇩
The John Deere triple 830 is the cats meow
I think the best looking set is the 880 oliver tractor
America at work. !!!
I once paired up an old cable operated D7 Cat crawler and a Minneapolis Moline 950 turbocharged LP gas tractor (it was the first LP gas turbo tractor in this area). I had thousands of small, budded pecan trees to dig out for sale so I built a root plow for the front of the D7 but in some of my clay soil the D7 wouldn't dig deep enough. I paired the MM for an extra 120 horsepower and traction. It worked well for one season then I bought a D8 dozer to avoid the hassle of coordinating two drivers.
Very interesting team. G950 is a cool tractor. Thank you for sharing.
@@bigtractorpower It was a learning experience turbo charging an LP tractor. I discovered they make "pressure compensating regulators" for turbo charged oil field engines that run on natural gas or LP. That discovery allowed me to complete my turbo project. I pulled a five 18" bottom breaking plow (requiring duals) with that tractor.
yeah in the UK they have the DOE show
Happy Thanksgiving BTP and family! That 830 was slick. It took a bit of engineering to hook all that up and make it all function together so well.
The 830 is neat. I have a ride along video on the way in December to show how the 830 Special works.
@@bigtractorpower That will, be great. Looking forwards to that.
Definitely Don Duffner's 830 Special!
It’s an awesome tractor.
3:10 not always impractical. We tried the same thing with an Allis WD-45 Diesel and a 190 Diesel to see if we could pull a 4 bottom through a field of clay. The clay turned out to be too hard, kept tripping the bottoms.
5:30 not a couple of WD, the rear tractor is clearly a styled WC.
We’re you able to plow the field another time?
@@bigtractorpower Some years the moisture was right and it was plowed.
5:59 maybe overlay captions in editing if you do something like this again in the future

For demo purposes only when is someone going to put 3 together .those Oliver's were good looking tandem. Great video
The John Deere 830 Special was built in 1996. They farmed with it for many years.
560 and an M. Strange combination.
Oh man da man is driving the double G's; I would plow all day on that machine for free! LOL.
Ingenuity or engineuity? Those old timers made things happen. Very cool machines
So is the "second" tractor, or the one without the operator, always in gear?
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving
How many engines did the john deere articulating one have?
Three. I will have a stand alone video on the 830 Special In December including a ride along in the cab.
The only modern example of pairing two tractors together that I’ve seen so far on RUclips was when Welker Farms had to dig a trench for a project they were working on but the biggest Big Bud they had wasn’t quite powerful enough on its own to pull the trencher through the ground, so they teamed up the biggest Big Bud tractor they had, a 600/50, with a wheeled Case IH Steiger 620, hooked together by a metal chain and this combined 1220 hp behemoth also required 2 people to operate
That is a cool combination.
That happens a lot more than you think lol.
@@bigtractorpower Yeah, Montana apparently has extremely rocky soil, so it takes a lot of horsepower to penetrate through it
There’s hundreds of videos like that on RUclips, and their 525/50 (it’s not a real 600/50) had the power, just not the weight
@@nellsonstout7001 Oh, I thought it was a 600/50.
My father’s brother-in-law fashioned two John Deere Rs together.
That was big tractor power in its day with two Rs. 👍👍
👍👍
I would like to see your review of the Nexat
I would class most of these as pusher tractors and one off farm built. The best tandem was the Oliver 880, was that a factory built tractor? Pity you couldn't find a Doe to show, I wonder if there is one in the States?
The Oliver’s sounded good, but not the same as the Detroit two stroke in Earthquake
Funny how flat breaking plows were the norm for so many yrs. Now they are down right taboo in most places.
They were the number one way at one time. Many farms still plow for certain crops.
@@bigtractorpower long as you have deep soil and not a lot of large rocks hiding, they aren't a bad tool. Shallow soil and caliche, you sure can make a mess.
Dad use to tell a story of a farmer that flat broke some river bottom land deep. Had a wet winter and spring. Everytime the farmer tried to put the planter in the ground, the tractor would spin down. He had to wait to plant a fall crop before the ground would hold the tractor up.
I was in DeKalb Illinois..15-20 yrs ago..guy had 2 IH tractors hooked together and a pony motor on the draw bar ...don't remember how big of a plow set up he had though...
Very cool to have seen that.
Plowed with two alot in the 60s two chains and a tire.
😁👍👍. Thank you for sharing.
There was a Minnie one of these for sale
Shoulda bought it
How do you control the gears, throttle, etc?
At the 6:00 min mark in this video I interview a person who owns one of these tandem tractors and he shows how the connection and throttle is set up.
I did see the other day on a farmers RUclips he was at a show in UK and someone converted 2 lawn mowers into a tandem garden tractor

Around 1958 my dad combined an international F-20 as the rear tractor with an Oliver 88 as the front tractor using an old railroad rail to hook them together. We rode on the front tractor, pulling a 5 bottom plow.
Very cool. Two great tractors.
Double G
It is a cool set up for plowing.
So u hook 2 tractors in tandem to pull 4 furrows . Each will pull 2 bottoms easily . Same amount of fuel used . Didn't gain anything except one less driver .
Finding that extra driver after World War II became harder as people moved to the suburbs for hire paying jobs.
👍👏🙋♂️🌈🌞🌞💥💥
my dad has a picture with the doe dual drive tandem from britain
Very cool. I hope to get to be able to feature a Doe someday.
@@bigtractorpower last i heard theres was only 1 left in north america. all the others are in europe & asia.

That plow the masseys were pulling was not set right at all.
That is why they were pulling it. It had just arrived at the show and they weee setting it for the Rite 750 to pull the next day.
When I was coming up, our neighbor man was already in his late 60s but still got out on his land every day. He often ran a setup of 2 McCormick Farmall Ms connected in tandem.
Are my eyes playing tricks or is the 830 JD actually 3 tractors making it a tridem?
Very cool on the M team. Yes that is 3 830s. I did a ride along in that 830 and will have a separate video on it soon.
Why is it they always seem to plow to shallow and the flowers and charge them are not set up right while I'm talking about is level with the ground left and right in front to back a lot of have the back higher LOL ground I hope I Google got in a right words for me I don't see too well
It’s simply a plowing demonstration. They only have a few hours to plow so it’s a hurried event and the plows are not always set just right for the lack of time.
Sad part about farming the government doesnt help them like they do other things like college students. Etc
New Farm Equipment is expensive.
