  • Q&A with Tom Selleck of BLUE BLOODS. Moderated by Matt Roush, TV Guide Magazine.
BLUE BLOODS is a drama about a multigenerational family of cops dedicated to New York City law enforcement. Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) is the New York Police Commissioner and heads both the police force and the Reagan brood. He runs his department as diplomatically as he runs his family, even when dealing with the politics that plagued his unapologetically bold father, Henry, during his stint as Chief.
Tom Selleck's versatility in both television and film has won the attention of audiences and critics worldwide. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of ‘Tom Magnum’ in the '80s CBS television hit, Magnum, P.I., which garnered him both an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series, as well as four People's Choice Awards, four Emmy nominations and six Golden Globe nominations for the role.
In addition to Blue Bloods, Selleck has established a contemporary audience from the success of his Emmy Award-nominated role in the Jesse Stone television movie franchise. Selleck executive produces and co-writes each installment. The most recent, Jesse: Stone: Benefit of the Doubt, aired on the Network in May 2012, and attracted 14.6 million viewers.
His other notable television credits include Las Vegas, Friends, Boston Legal, Twelve Mile Road,The Closer,Shadow Riders,Divorce Wars, Ruby Jean and Joe,Broken Trust, Last Stand at Saber River, Returning Home and Running Mates.
In addition to television, Selleck’s feature film career has shown him in a variety of roles. In 1987, he starred opposite Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg in the romantic comedy Three Men and a Baby, a box office success which established Selleck’s success in film. This was the first motion picture to rate number one at the box office for the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's weekends, as well as the first motion picture to become No. 1 in the world in 1988. The film won Favorite Comedy Motion Picture at the People’s Choice Awards in 1988. In 1990, Selleck returned in the film’s sequel Three Men and a Little Lady.
Other film credits include In and Out,Mr. Baseball, Her Alibi, The Love Letter, Broken Trust, Penta/America, Folks, An Innocent Man, Runaway and High Road to China.
Making his Broadway debut in 2001, Selleck played Murray Burns, a cheerful eccentric who raised his nephew, a 12-year-old middle-aged kid, in New York City, in the romantic comedy "A Thousand Clowns," at New York’s Longacre Theatre.
In addition to his acting successes, Selleck has become prolific behind-the-scenes. He co-wrote the screenplays for both Jesse Stone: Death in Paradiseand Jesse Stone: No Remorse with J.T. Allen and Michael Brandman. Additionally, he starred in and executive produced Monte Walsh. Other notable executive producer credits include The Closer, Louis L’Amour’s Crossfire Trail, Last Stand at Saber River, Ruby Jean and Joe, Revealing Evidence: Stalking the Honolulu Stranger and Magnum P.I. during its last two seasons.
Selleck devotes much of his time to philanthropic causes. He is a board member of The Joseph & Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics; an advisory board member of the Character Counts Coalition; a spokesman for the National Fatherhood Initiative; a committee member of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; and is actively involved in the Student/Sponsor Partnership Program in New York City. Also, with the late Barbara Jordan, he has been a former national Spokesperson for the Coalition, an Honorary chairman of the Skin Cancer Foundation and a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Mission to help the homeless. Additionally, he has received a Distinguished American Award for the Horatio Alger Association and was the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Pepperdine University.
Selleck resides in Southern California with his wife, actress Jillie Mack, and their daughter. His birthday is Jan. 29.

matlock12c My thoughts as well. He has incredible wisdom and a very realistic view of life, which is everything else but him, but he has a very realistic view of himself as well. The end result is exactly what you said: Tom Selleck is a class act, in all aspects of his life and his work. I'm sure his experience and training (got those backward) as a Navy Seal in VN helped a lot. But then, if he managed to survive that life-and-death ordeal, then he was capable of handling anything. The end-result is a man who is a master of his craft, and the bedrock of a show like Blue Bloods. It has been said that the rest of the cast looks up to him as a kind of father-figure; that comes through in the way they naturally respond to him on the screen when parent/child scenes are portrayed. I'm sure the younger cast feels very comfortable acting with him; there's not much not to like/love about him.
Blue Bloods is Tom Selleck; Tom Selleck is Blue Bloods. Not a cliche; IMHO, the honest truth. He's the man we see; the series (and CBS) are also very fortunate to have Kevin Wade as the on-hand Executive Producer behind the scenes. Every interview I have seen has shown that the two have an excellent professional relationship; that goes a long way to make a series a success. When the top-dog actor and the EP can't get along, nothing good happens.

Victoria Bravo Tom Selleck is always superb in his acting. No one can beat him!! Very classy always The best actor I have known I always admire his humility, kind heart, and a real family man.For a while he gave up acting to raise his daughter and be with his family. He is great to his fans Although have watched his movies and Tv series I have not seen him in person. My wish and dream is someday I will get a chance to see him in person! THAT WOULD BE THE GREATEST GIFT I will have if that happens. I love Blue Blood,Never miss it every Friday

Blue Bloods is by far my favorite series in all the 75 years of my life. It will be so sad to ever see it end. Every character has such unique parts and my interest is always there 100%. Also I do like the old fashion way that Henry calls Tom, Francis. Love the Irish I married one even though I’m Italian. Keep the show going it’s by far the best. My favorite series before Blue Bloods was the Soprano’s but by far I am really hooked on Blue Bloods as the best.

Very charismatic and humble man, always great seeing Tom Selleck. I haven't seen the show Blue Bloods yet, but will no doubt get around to watching it. Magnum, along with CHiP's were my two favourite American shows as a child growing up in the UK.

And while I differ with much of his political philosophy, Selleck is, indeed, a genuinely intelligent and personable guy. As an actor, he is certainly very adept. I think, whatever else, his viewpoints are honest.

Thank Tom Selleck, for keeping the Vietnam flash backs in Magnum. Your were right , at that time we were not seen in a good light by most of the people.
Even though I had been married two years and drafted, most all my company ended up in Vietnam as 11B10 ( Infantry) and called many terrible things up on returning, all of no choice of our own. Not guilty of most all of things we were accused. In a lot of the things it was the opposite of what we did.
1st Air Cav. central highlands 1967 Airborne , airmobile and AirAssault
PS: did not know you co-wrote Jesse stone and wish you had made more Westerns . You are great in anything you do, but loved the westerns.
Same age as you and Sam Elliot.

    • @victorcastle1840

PS: Even in a small down state college town in ILL. people did not give us a descent attitude up on return. Even if they did come right out and say anything, it was the comments and they way they said, little comments.
fifty plus years and I still remember the sting, even though I tried not to remember or let it go.

The dinner scene from Blue Bloods, is an extraction from an old TV series called The Ghost and Mrs Muir. Mrs Muir was played by Hope Lange. Most, who view Blue Bloods do not know or understand the significance of the dinners. Look at Grandad.
