Something else that’s interesting about Air Goryeo is that it’s named about the historical kingdom that united the entire Korean Peninsula, not specific to North Korea. This is something North Korea does a lot to assert itself as the true Korea with historical ties. North Korea calls itself 북조선 (but South Korea doesn’t). In Japanese and Chinese, it’s 朝鮮 (Joseon). This isn’t a translation of DPRK or North Korea, it’s the old name of Korea. So basically the old Korean and new Korea. Making Air Goryeo, literally Old Korean Airlines, fitting considering their fleet.
Great video as always. Another idea for Wendover Productions, i don't know if you have in your list: what if a non Air Kyoro aircraft has an emergency and the only possible airport it can reach is in North Korea? I don't know if it's possible (maybe in a flight from Japan to Russia?), but at least i'd love to know what would happen in theory.
I dont think they ever go over NK airspace and the nearest airport would then be Seoul probably... I think they most likely 'ignore' it as if the airport didnt exist.
A similar issue happened with a Norwegian flight over Iran (I think they'd lost an engine and had to land). Even worse was that it happened during the relatively recent and long US government shutdown, so getting an exemption from the sanctions in order to pay for repair there was even harder
Flight from South Korea to Russia regularly fly around the NK's no-flight zone, right alongside the shore. The only problem is, most of North Korea is just forest, which is not very easy to land on. Might as well land on the sea.
The area where only a DPRK civilian airport could be reached (instead of reaching a civilian airport in China, South Korea, or Russia) is pretty small. Most of the civilian airports in the DPRK are in the northeast, which is fairly close to Vladivostok. (Yanbian, PRC is also quite close.) And if you're more than 50-70 miles from Pyongyang (the only international airport in the DPRK, and the only one not in the northeast portion of the country), you can either land at Dandong, PRC, Seoul, ROK, or Yanbian, PRC. Using your theoretical example (Japan to Russia), the geodesic route between Narita (Tokyo) and Sheremetyevo (Moscow) goes to the east of the DPRK, so you'd land in Russia. If we go from further south in Japan (let's say Nagasaki), the geodesic route goes west of the country. So, if you can't land at Seoul or China (due to the emergency), you're not going to be able to reach the DPRK, either. Going from Seoul to SVO does go over the DPRK (and pretty close to Pyongyang), that window is still pretty tiny. The Boeing 767 is only going to be closest to Pyongyang for, at most, 15 minutes of its flight. And with its given glide ratio (20:1), it's going to be able to make a safe landing outside the DPRK if it's above 30k feet when the emergency occurs, and the emergency is not a catastrophic loss of structural integrity (i.e. your plane is still in one piece).

I wouldn’t describe North Korea as a dictator’s Disneyland. That title goes to Turkmenistan. Just look at their capital Ashgabat
Actually Singapore has been called "Disneyland with the Death Penalty"by William Gibson.
Still better than HAI airlines
*Half As Airworthy
I flew Air Koryo in 2014 from Beijing to Pyongyang and quite enjoyed it. Especially the inflight entertainment, which consisted of an endless propaganda video of a military nurses orchestra concert playing on the overhead screens and piped into the bathroom speakers. A sandwich and soft drink were provided. All in all, it was a much more comfortable experience than flying domestic in the USA...
Declining audience retention? Sorry to hear. You've got an excellent channel that compliments wendover.
I heard that passengers had no remarks, they couldn't complain...

I'm still trying to figure out what they're called
I've flown on Air Koryo on an IL-62 and thought it was fine.
UN: we need North Korea to change and make peace with us.
Also UN: make them suffer
Legend has it that Air Koryo uses dangerous planes to prevent people from entering North Korea
How are they dangerous???
You have, after a half (as interesting) year, earned my subscription
‘USSR became USS not’
One of the few jokes on this channel that I laughed at loudly.😂😂

Your pronunciation of 'buoys' caught me massively off guard
muzza307 ive always been pronouncing it that way
Never thought about the fact that they don't have an airforce really then
Loved the video! I also enjoyed how your sarcasm is borderline cheeky in this presentation ;)
