GBO2 Penelope: The only viable 700 cost raid!

  • This video contains two matches I had with the Penelope on Gundam Battle Operation 2. It is a 700 cost raid with access to a time limited flight mode with infinite thrust, great midrange DPS, amazing overall stagger ability, very high durability alongside having funnel missiles which have outstanding tracking. It has many drawbacks however, such as only being able to fly for 30 seconds at any given time, its flight skill being on a 40 seconds long cooldown, it having just 225 boosting speed alongside it having somewhat short range. I feel like this suit has fallen off quite a lot since the Nu Gundam buffs, but it still feels better to play than most 700 raids. I hope that you enjoy watching!
    Its primary weapon is a beam rifle with 2900 power, 6 ammo, 5 seconds cooldown, 15 seconds reload, 0.77 seconds swap time, 350m range and 20% stagger value. This is a pretty standard instant stun rifle, albeit with high performance. It is a good opener for your other weapons.
    Its primary melee weapon is a dual wield beam saber with 3200 power, 2.5 seconds cooldown, 0.5 seconds swap time, 60% combo modifier and 140% downswing modifier. The downswing on this has good horizontal reach, it can do pretty good damage against supports.
    Its second sub weapon is a shoulder beam cannon with 1500x2 power, 80% heat, 3.5 seconds cooldown, 22 seconds overheat, 0.5 seconds swap time, 400m range and 20%x2 stagger value. This stops to fire, but instant staggers and deals good damage.
    Its third sub weapon is a set of funnel missiles with 400x8 power, 8 ammo, 13 seconds reload, 0.5 seconds swap time, 300m range and 15%x8 stagger value. These need to lock on before firing, once launched they home in on the enemy. These are nearly impossible to dodge out in the open, so its basically a fully reliable stun option. They can also be used while boosting.
    Its fourth sub weapon is an arm missile launcher with 400x2 power, 16 ammo, 350 RPM, 15 seconds reload, 0.5 seconds swap time, 300m range and 10%x2 stagger value. These don't stagger very well, but have very high DPS.
    Its fifth sub weapon is an arm beam cannon with 3000 power, 100% heat, 15 seconds overheat, 0.5 seconds swap time, 250m range and 5 seconds focus time. This has short range and must focus before firing, but it inflicts heavy stagger.
    Its sixth sub weapon is a vulcan gun with 130 power, 30 ammo, 720 RPM, 9 seconds reload, 0.5 seconds swap time, 200m range, 1560 DPS and 5% stagger value. These can stagger in about 1.6 seconds.
    The Penelope has 28000 HP, 32 ballistic resist, 28 beam resist and 32 melee resist. This is pretty great durability, but it is even better once you consider that it has a 35% damage reduction legs buffer, a 30% reduction shoulder buffer alongside a 15% reduction chest buffer. It has LV3 Emergency Evasion and LV1 High Maneuver Armor for defensive skills. High MA reduces damage taken by 50%, reduces stun accumulation taken by 40% and nullifies all instant staggers except for downswings and tackles.
    In terms of mobility it has 150 (153 including ground affinity) (190 in waverider mode) movement speed, 225 (235) boost speed, 85 thrust and 84 (90 including affinity) turning speed. It has good mobility if you ignore the boosting speed, which is quite low, on par with pre NT-D Banshee. It has both LV3 Forced Injector and LV4 Flight Control however. It has a touchpad activated skill called M Flight Unit (P), this works like the Flight System skill found on other suits, but rather than using thrust, you gain unlimited thrust for 30 seconds, with dodge rolls taking 3 seconds off the timer. You also gain the ability to transform into a plane-like mode. After the 30 seconds have expired, you cannot activate flight mode again for another 40 seconds. If shot down before the timer ends, the time you had left on the clock is subtracted from your flight mode cooldown.

    In conclusion, I feel that while the Penelope can still be effective if you know how to use flight mode to the fullest, this new meta is far too hostile for it to be a truly good option. I think that it could get some buffs to help it keep up. I think that it should have 20 seconds flight cooldown time, 235 boosting speed and LV4 Forced Injectors. The weapons loadout is excellent, the flight mode is pretty strong while active, but you are gonna be playing on the ground for most of the match, which kind of defeats the purpose of using a flight suit. Despite all of this, you still need to take a raid or else your team will get battered by the enemy support, so Penelope is your only real option if the enemy generals are on point. Just be very careful when a Nu Gundam is looking your way. Thanks for watching, and I hope that you enjoyed it!

    Below are the skills I couldn't fit in the video description:
    After boosting for a short time while transformed, boosting speed is increased by 10 and ram power is increased to 4000.
    LV3 Aux Power. This buffs your attack power by 30% and reduces damage taken by 95% for 10 seconds if an attack would destroy you while you have 1000 HP or more, your HP is also set to 800 once it activates.
    LV2 Pursuit Aux. Ranged Program, which buffs ranged damage dealt to stunned or knocked down enemies by 15%.
    LV1 Raise Counter. When counter tackling at 50% HP or less, you and all allies in radar range deal 20% more damage and take 10% less damage for 10 seconds. Your own counter power is also increased.
    LV7 Enhanced Tackle. +350% tackle power (tackle power boosted to 2700), tackle distance increased by 50% and tackle thrust usage reduced by 20%.

    What about Nu FF? Im a pc player so I dont know what its like in 700 on consoles, but FF seemed to always have a place in the 700 meta?

      FF Nu is really tough against Xi Gundam, but it will get even worse for ya'll on PC since they are gonna give gigantic buffs to the Nu Gundam, Hi-Nu Gundam and Phenex. I wouldn't say its impossible to play but the cards are very stacked against FF Nu now.

      ​@@avenger1_gbo260It can be tougher to deal with the newer generals, but I still find it one of the best 700 raids since it can keep its distance and evade well.
      It can still harass the old targets and supports pretty well, though it could use some more bulk behind it at the least.

    do you think we'll start to see lock on/fire and forget missiles at lower cost? feels like such a simple tech comparatively for Gundam I'm honestly surprised we haven't had it in combination with all the dummy fire rockets and guided missiles for a long time now.

      I would say probably not. In lore, there is a space science explanation for why fire and forget/locking on missiles can't work. The only reason it works for Xi and Penelope is because they are newtype/psychic weapons that bypass this restriction. The closest you will get is probably guided missiles like Blue Destiny Unit 1 or Ghoul.

      The reason it’s not simple tech in gundam is prob because of minovsky particles jamming the automatic targeting of those kinds of missles

      All of the above and the fact that even during one year war, even if they can they wouldnt for 2 main reasons
      1 beam psycommu are way more cost effective and renewable than a 1 time use psycommu missiles that is not that advanced yet, you need a really big machine to control them wireless but otherwise on suits psycommu still requires wires to function

    With the Xi and Penelope coming soon to PC which one would you recommend to spend 7 steps on?

      It might be a tough choice. Xi Gundam is much stronger, it is arguably still the strongest 700 cost generals even after the recent round of buffs for the underperforming ones. Penelope is weaker, but it is almost guaranteed to see buffs at some point that bring it into the meta. More importantly right now though, Penelope comes with a really strong custom part. It costs 2 close slots, 2 mid slots and 1 long slot, in return all of your thrust usage is reduced by 10%, which is really useful for a load of different suits.

    3:25 OK am I missing something here? How does it melee priority three raid clash with a Melee priority two general. this happens to me more often than I would like there still no explanation as to why

      Byarlant Custom is a monster of a MS with the right pilot.
      Anyone else below that pilot level, it'll become a "Meh" MS at best.

      It's not bad, the scaling is really good and it can do a lot of damage, but it feels like all the strong suits at 700 cost are REALLY good at anti-air, so it can be tough.

      Hopefully they buff the Nightingale first. At the very least, it needs to be able to safely close distances without getting stunned, and some relatively minor improvements on some weapons, and it'll at least become usable with how much burst DPS it can put out.

    I kinda wish that if you were in mobile armour mode when flight mode ends, you could stay in MA mode and just use boost until you transform back. Both as a way to actually have a reason to transform and to keep flight going a bit longer, can just have it take boost gauge after flight ends.

      It's tough, because all the meta generals right now are built to easily counter the Sinanju Stein. Maybe you can leverage the long range to attack the support from a distance, but it's still hard to deal with Xi Gundam and Nu Gundam.

    I saw someone on reddit saying that Penelope needed buffs while I was already thinking its literally the only usable raid in 700 rn lol.
