    Abbott is a beast. ( 6'3") The batter must feel like she is right in their face. This game should not have been this close. Japan had only 2 hits against US pitching.
    Poor situational batting by the US. The batters failed to execute with runners on base. Zero balls in the outfield with runners in scoring position or on base. Other than the foul
    ball that was caught in the sixth. It's ironic that it was that foul ball for the second out, that led to the go ahead run on the tag up. I have to admit that I was really
    surprised that they sent the runner on the short foul ball.

    • @seraphx26
      @seraphx26 3 года назад +1

      I wouldn't go all that far, Japan's hitting was dismal practically nonexistent but their defense is quite superior to the US team, those double plays are momentum shifting, Japan simply lacks the hitters to take advantage of that if they can shore that up they are going to be a real problem.

    I don't understand why the announcers made such a big deal about the pitcher basically throwing a pitch to first base to get the runner (24:15). It's always seemed to me that since they spend so much time practicing pitching underhand, and do it so well with good velocity and accuracy, it just makes sense to do it. I've always been curious about that. I doubt that they can throw faster or more accurately overhand, or get rid of the ball any quicker in most cases. Is there a good reason why it isn't done more?

    • @JackycClark
      @JackycClark 3 года назад +1

      Didn't understand the big deal either . Pitchers I played with grew up throwing overhand & were good at it . Pitchers sometimes get very specialized though . Don't hit , don't run , wouldn't that be boring ?

    • @becca-ww3xw
      @becca-ww3xw 3 года назад +1

      I've only ever seen it done with slower runners, never a fast lefty like that. I think it would take just a little bit longer to get rid of the ball doing a full windup like that, and against a good slapper, you really can't afford to give up any time (she just barely got the batter here, and it was a somewhat poorly placed bunt). I guess that's why they were so surprised by it? but hey, it worked, so good for her! if you're more comfortable doing that, go for it i guess! better than throwing it wildly and giving up an extra base lmao

    • @patrickmorgan4006
      @patrickmorgan4006 3 года назад

      @@becca-ww3xw You might be right, but I think it's more likely that they are just used to throwing overhand to first. It probably doesn't take more time to release the ball and get it to first base underhand than overhand for a pitcher, but I couldn't say for sure. It would depend on how and where the ball was fielded. Maybe someone will do a study sometime.

    When are they going to stop calling it a rise ball. Physics has proven no pitcher has yet achieved the speed and spin it takes to make a softball defy gravity and actually rise. The ball still has an arc just less of one. it should just be called a high fastball.

The announcers are saying "look how the rise ball jumps over the bat" it doesn't jump anything it simply goes low to high and they swing under. I have played lots of baseball and a curve ball drops and curves. RISE balls do no start on a flat plan and then via magnus affect rise upward. YOu can call it a silly potato for all i care but it doesnt rise. its simply a fastball throw upward. In baseball its simply a high fastball. Curve balls only work because of spin and the affects of gravity. Baseball pitchers throw much faster and with lots more spin and no one has made a baseball RISE.

      A softball just doesn't travel like a baseball . Also it's designed to be a faster game than baseball , distance from the mound to plate , btwn bases , fences are part of that .

    • @becca-ww3xw
      @becca-ww3xw 3 года назад +1

      ok honestly as a softball player i agree! the fences are sooo short, it feels like strong girls can just poke the ball over the fence, and outfielders are getting so much better that not a lot drops for hits at elite levels. however, softball doesn't get enough funding for most places to move the fences back (i'm thinking of the college level), which sucks because bigger fields would be super fun. what they need to do is either a) deaden the balls or b) regulate how springy the bats can be. this would make it a lot harder to hit it out. obviously, bigger fields would be better, but until softball is given more funding, it's just not a reality.
