Thanks for the reminder! I clean after each project! Instead of using compressed air, I use a mini vacuum cleaner to pull the additional dust/threads out (rather than blow in). And like other commenters, I change the needle and oil/lube the recommended points. Usually takes me less than 1/2 hour for the “full spa treatment”, and saves trips and long stays at the repair shop!
I think after you clean this is a good time to see if your machine needs a little lubing. I'm not talking taking stuff apart or what a comprehensive "cleaning" in the shop would be, but if you wiped up all the machine oil below your bobbin case (especailly if you used a q-tip, that absorbs), a "little" added sewing machine oil before you put the bobbin case back in will help your machine move smoother.
I clean my machine after 6 - 8 hours of sewing or more if she is deciding to play up. I only used a compressed air can to push to the front of my machine as my bobbin case is on the front of my machine. I change needles frequently especially when using batting and also cleaning when using batting. I love your sewing machine cover. This is a good video reminder to clean, clean, clean often. Thank you.
Thanks! I already know how to clean my machine but you can always learn something new. Like the mascara wands are they are great!! Please keep doing more tutorials and definitely we need a tutorial on you sewing machine cover!! Love love love it!!
@@ISeeStarsQuilting I cleaned my old Brother machine and ended up using 3 wands. i could not believe it. i had never cleaned this machine this way. i've had it for 20 years! Thanks to your sharing, its all clean now. !!!!😂
I quilt on my domestic machine, and after an entire quilt, my machine looks like yours! I clean it before I start, and again at the end.... and any time I notice that fuzz accumulating around the bobbin case. I use pipe cleaners, bent into a little loop. They do a good job of picking up lint. I also have a battery-powered compressed air blower. After I've cleaned, I blow ACROSS the bed of the machine, not directly into it. This creates a suction and pulls any bits of lint up and out.
Thanks for the mascara wand tip. I didn’t know those are available. I’ve been using craft packs of ‘pipe’ cleaners from the Dollar Tree, they’re soft and bend before they move anything but occasionally they’re too soft bristled to really grab thread bits. I’ll be grabbing some of those wands!
You blew my mind with your tutorial!! I have cleaned my machine in the past but NEVER thought about cleaning in between the feeding dogs... I am scared to see how bad mine is 😂😂 Thank you for your videos ❤
Great demo, I had no idea there were little battery operated air blowers like that. What a nice improvement over expensive compressed air. With Prime day coming, I should be able to get one for my sewing room and one for a gift for hubby for his computer. Thank you!
I’m doing a little homework here. I’ve heard it’s best to vacuum out machine from 1/2 quilters I know, some use blowers & others take into shop a lot for cleaning.
I need to clean my machine….I never really thought about needing to clean it…😳🤦♂️ a question I have for you is: how often do you change your needle? I’ve never changed mine and it seems to still work for me….I’d like to know why it needs to be changed and how often. I appreciate your videos!!!
The sewing companies recommend every 10-12 hours of sewing time. So for me... thats roughly about every 1-12 quilt piecings. It isn't an exact science but a sharper needle goes through your fabric easier and creates less pushback on your machine keeping it in better condition for longer. I'm so glad you like the videos! let me know if you have more questions! 🤩
Thanks for always being real. How often do you have your machines serviced? I know they say once a year but sometimes I wonder if it would be smarter to go by stitch count for those of us who don't see for hours every day.
Unless you have a $2K+ machine that you really don’t want to void a current warranty on or something, then search your machine up on YT… much easier and cheaper to service yourself… it’s very easy to clean and lube your box store plastic Janome/Brothers… or indeed vintage/retro machines… and fun! 🤗
Omg you have a janome ❤ I have a 3160 qdc-t I wanted a QOV but they ran out of them I clean mine after every project or once a week lol I just wish she had a bigger throat space trying to push a 75x75 through her was more than a challenge when it came to quilting
I appreciate this., I know it's important to take care of the machine. I bought a new Singer over a year ago because my mom's old machine that I inherited bunches wads of thread on the lower side of the fabric. Because I don't know why and fear it could be a tension thing that I don't understand, I have been afraid to pull out my new machine and use it. Manuals don't come with newbie instructions. Do you have any tips? I love the idea of creating with the machine but fear destroying it.
Machines or any appliances that do not come with paper manuals should have online manuals. I downloaded the manuals for my washer and dryer. Please use your new machine. Sewing machines do not like to sit around unused because the oil can get gummy or dry up.
This question is really better answered by your specific machine manufacturer. Each one is different and the instructions for oiling an antique machine are vastly different for a more modern model. I never have to oil my machine except when I take it in the be serviced about ever 2-3 years -- but I know older machines are much more thirsty. I would do some google searching on your specific model or ask a repair shop to help you with yours.
You should not have the sole plate off when the machine is on and you certainly shouldn’t be cleaning a machine that’s switched on. If you want to do this when you clean your machine that’s up to you but a tutorial on how to clean should not be on a switched on machine.

LOVE the spa treatment you give.
Would you mind sharing info on your mini vacuum? (type & where to buy)

I use little craft paintbrushes to get the dust bunnies.... they work great!
That is a wonderful idea!

I love my Janome 3160...l even quilt my lap quilts on it😊
That is so awesome!
I like how you clean. I try to clean after every bobbin change or end of a project. This is also when I oil. I read that Jukis require more oilings.
Yes, great idea after each project. 😊❤
I also oil at this time as well. TFS
Yes great tip!

I use the mascara wands too. They're great! Tutorial or pattern for the cover, please!😊
They really do get the job done. Awe, your the 2nd person that asked that. I'll have to do that.
Thanks for always being real. How often do you have your machines serviced? I know they say once a year but sometimes I wonder if it would be smarter to go by stitch count for those of us who don't see for hours every day.
On my travel machine, I go about every 4 years. On my main squeeze sewing machine I take it every other year or if it makes a weird noise 🤔
Hey Christen you clean like I do.
YAY!

LOL it can be tough for sure. Glad you clean yours often, that is great.

Now days they do put most stuff online. Also youtube should have some great videos on it.
Can you tell me about oiling it and where the drops of oil go? Thanks!

❤ cute nails also
Thanks so much.
Love my Janome s🎉 I own 2 and elna
I love it also!
Whoa, I gotta go check out my feed dogs for dust bunnies and otder some mascara wands. 😮
LOL... :)
Holy moly, you could have almost made another quilt with your dust bunnies! 😂😂😂
HAHAH true true.
How to measure for
Instead of the air use vacuum
I clean mine after each bobbin, change
That is perfect.
I try to clean and replace needles after each project. I need to get back to it.
You got this!
I use pipe cleaners!
Yes, those work also.
Not supposed to blow out, use vacuum to clean.
I will try that. Thank you.
Safety first. FYI, the machine should NOT be powered on when you are cleaning it.
You are correct
You should not have the sole plate off when the machine is on and you certainly shouldn’t be cleaning a machine that’s switched on. If you want to do this when you clean your machine that’s up to you but a tutorial on how to clean should not be on a switched on machine.

Thank you for this video. I know I should clean my machines more frequently than I do. 🧵♥️
