  • Warning: this one here is ONLY for the real die hard Homeskoolers out there.
Damn near 30 minutes of rehearsal footage....i thought about chopping it up, but then decided to give it all to ya in one big long painful block, so you can feel the slog of a 10 hour rehearsal day just like we do haha.
disclaimer: i clearly realize that there are worse 10 hour work days.....
i'll tell ya' a job that would REALLY suck.
top of my list of all-time nightmare jobs....to be the guy that cleans and maintains a busy airport restroom....there's something about "international shit" that's even more horrifying than "domestic shit"....
the worst job i ever had in my younger days was doing carpet and flooring with my older brother doug...it was great to hang out with him all day, but the job itself SUCKED.
i also did asphalt with my other brother Mike....a VERY small company in Cleveland called "Perfection Paving"...the only dump truck the company could afford was from the 40's and it wouldn't go over 35 MPH on the highway....which was a problem when you are carrying a hot load of asphalt long distances.
anyhoo....back to today's video...b roll rehearsal footage from the recently aired CMT show called "Giants" honoring Vince Gill.
    Starring
    Uncle Larry
    Jedd Hughes
    Paulie Franklin
    Chris Stapleton
    Jimmie Lee Sloas
    Becky Fluke

I just appreciated how Tom made everyone relax - he was staying serious but having fun - keeping Jed loose - this was a masterclass in how to be a bandmate - and the performance is killer - great behind the scenes view of the music world especially Vince - a true giant.

Just a heartfelt thanks for sharing this Tom. A masterclass in taste and tone, and how two guitarists should collaborate in service of the song. I watched the broadcast, and oddly felt very proud to see you there, especially your solo spotlight with Maren Morris.

Outside of the country music community, Vince Gill is vastly under-appreciated for the depth of his talent. I don’t know him personally but I have a couple friends who do know him personally from guitar trading, both say he is one of the nicest men they have ever met. Congrats on the gig it was great. I watched several of the performances and I was near moved to tears on many of them

      when Nashville went under water,
George Gruhn was rushing in to his store across from the Ryman talking to my former employer on the phone. The Ryman went under, but There was Vince Gill waiting to help George move guitars and stuff to the second floor not realizing his stuff was going under water across the river (and so did everyone else's).

After watching and listening intently to the show Friday night I can honestly say this doesn't surprise me.
Everyone spoke so touchingly of him and his character. The world could easily use a few more Mr. Gills imo.. 🕊

Vince and Amy ARE as nice as they can be. As a former Nashville engineer I had the pleasure of recording Amy (never Vince, sadly enough).
My wife and I DID stand in line at The Pancake Pantry in Hillsboro Village one morning with Vince years ago. He was in line by himself. After a wait, Vince ended up getting seated at the table next to us….again by himself. After about twenty minutes of him dividing his attention between his menu and watching the door….I mortified my wife by turning to Vince and asking him if he got stood up for breakfast and would he like to join us at our table. He laughed and thanked us, but politely declined.
A bit later he got up to go to the bathroom. No sooner had he disappeared, Richard Marx stuck his head in the door, looked around, and not seeing who he was looking for…quickly left the restaurant.
Vince left directly after that, not returning to his table.
I’m sure the two had a breakfast meeting planned but never connected.
To this day, my wife still says….”I can’t believe you asked Vince Gill to breakfast with us!!”

I love that chat at 12:35 about the volume pedal. Jedd - "I just feel like the volume keeps dropping..." - This is possibly the most "inside a guitar player" moment I've ever witnessed on youtube. The sensation that there's no reason you shouldn't be able to hear yourself in the current circumstance, or a note isn't holding on like it should. It leads to the amp shop, buying new pedals, rewiring everything, and yet it will happen again. This video is great!

Hi Tom - I watched the B roll footage and the entire Giants show (some parts several times) and was totally drawn in to how you and Jedd worked together as complimentary players. Great example of collaboration.
The best song for me was "Don't Let Our Love Start Slippin' Away" with your fantastic solo on the LP. Not the easiest song for the rhythm player since it is in F, but when I saw Jedd's capo on 1, I knew what was going on. Putting all of your tutelage together. Your tone and phrasing were pure country and you pulled out the best parts of Vince's original solo.

I think I speak for the class when I say what a great opportunity it is to "sit in" behind the scenes! Regarding the Vince tribute on Friday, I was channel surfing for a good program and ran across that one. While watching I noticed what I thought may be Uncle Larry in the band, given the riffs and mannerisms and as a plus your friend Jed ? Almost like Christmas, I hopped out of bed and went to the computer to confirm and saw that you had posted a reminder several hours earlier to watch . You guys were great as usual! Thanks for the lesson and keep them coming.
