I recently stumbled onto your channel and was intrigued by your lesson (roses). I played with acrylics many years ago then got married, had children and, as happens, life took over and I thought that was the end of painting. Then after I retired (I am a retired scientist) I commented to my husband that I’d love to try to paint again. As was his way, he went out and bought me all kinds of supplies and said, “Ok then, off you go.” I enjoyed getting back into it, watching various tutorials and trying different things. I loved it. I experimented in colours, techniques, ideas… it was fun and relaxing. Then my amazing husband of 40 years became ill and died within weeks of his diagnosis. In hospital, I asked him how I would ever cope without him. He said keep painting. So for him, I tried. I tried for two years and made a mess of everything, binning painting after painting. In the end, I stopped trying to bring back the joy of painting. It had become more like work to me. I kept watching tutorials but nothing made me want to blow the dust off everything and try again. Then your channel came through my feed. Not expecting much, I watched two videos. As I watched, I thought, this is interesting, and isn’t she sweet. Your attitude towards not worrying about imperfections, using only one brush, going for the overall vision rather than details and so on, was new to me. I am going to try your idea today. You have ignited a little spark in me to make me look forward to trying again. I love your bubbly energy and cheerful attitude. I am confident your subscribers will grow to huge numbers. I know I am going to add one more to that number. I am so glad you created a channel. All the best from Australia 🇦🇺.
What a beautiful painting. Daffodils were my Mom's favorite flowers. Shevwould live this and youve inspired me to paint daffodils this week. Thank you for your kindness and the sharingnof yourntime andvtalent!
@@PatGaedeke Alaska!!! Amazing. Thank you. As I said to my hubby tonight. Right now I’m just enjoying showing you how I work and the way I would teach you. It’s not perfect but at least the art speaks for itself in that it’s capturing a moment !! I appreciate your comment and watching!!
Hello Aly…your newbie here…this was a wonderful demonstration of palette knife painting and for those who don’t understand Impressionism, this was a wonderful example of such! I love using the palette knife and will give this a go. Yesterday, after coming across your channel I went and painted (not the same subject) but using your tips I was thrilled with what came out on the paper (I used watercolor paper-a discarded watercolor painting 😅). You helped the “light bulb” to go on and I was able to do something that previously was difficult for me. Please keep posting and I wish you all the best…God bless!😊
I am discovering your videos and I love what I see . I took one art class with oils in college ( I am 78) and have ever since drawing ad doodling on my notebooks. I am constantly in owe at what seems as a ruined painting but with a few strokes you suddenly turn it into a beautiful painting. It’s wonderful to watch you working and be able to enjoy the finished result. The double joy of seeing how you enjoy the process resembles mine when playing with my stuff.BTW, my background is in science, but my heart has been in art all my life. Thanks for the videos!
Thank you for taking the time to share. Gosh I wish I was science based sometimes as I can’t even help my kids with their physics or biology homework!!! Oils are tricky to work with and to teach. I taught a class once and my student was determined to leave with only oils.. until she realised three weeks in how tricky it can be. Grab some acrylic as they are forgiving in the beginning. Enjoy the demos. More Oil and acrylic demos to come!!!
@ I have never tried oils again. You are so right.. difficult. My only paint produced that way was bought from me by a classmate. Sorry if I am lingering for too long, I have drawn as a hobby with pencils and ink for years sine I was 12 maybe;,I have filled dozens of sketchbooks with ink and pencil doodles over the yearsI . I want to try something more rich : Will acrylics be too dense for mixed media paper Or watercolor paper? Thanks!
@@jennivandermoezel8907 thanks for watching and for the feedback. It’s a fun but tricky enough wee one. As with all of the demos, it’s another wee moment in time on canvas!
@ I’m in to watch whatever you offer- something quick and loose is such a great way to get moving when the art block hits - and to grow skills- so I’m grateful for what you are teaching! So thanks again!
I just found your channel yesterday and have subscribed. Yesterday I was looking for RUclips videos on the different ways you can use modeling paste and your video today was so helpful, Aly! Thank you.
@@JB-ot9uk this means a great deal thank you ! I always felt that RUclips would be where I would find my people but for 10 years I just held back on showing all of me. If that makes sense! So thank you for being here and giving me your time enjoy the tips and have a great Monday!
Daffodils are my favourite flowers, but I can never draw or paint them they just look wrong. I’m fine with other flowers. I didn’t even think about using a palette knife with acrylic I usually use watercolour. Your tutorials are so lively and fun, I’m gonna get some acrylics and paint along with you ❤❤❤
@@cragglesharvey2774 hello! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the demo and to give your take on this. As I said in another comment, I felt a bit out of my depth too at times!! Sometimes the simpler flowers are actually trickier to bring to life and we want them to look less flat. But with all of the tutorials that I teach you, I want you to enjoy the full impression of what is in front of you and to believe in the end product. That’s amazing that you use watercolours. I’ve been chatting to a few others on here and it is a real skill so paint as you see fit and take any tips that I give you, which I trust will enhance your work moving forward. Thanks again.
@ awww 🙏 thanks for replying that was very kind. Small and intricate not a problem. I need to be free, open and more abstract. I actually did a very thick textured painting for my Art O Level. I mixed chalk in with the paint. I need to paint more messy. Loved the tulip tutorial as well ❤️❤️❤️
@@alyharte488love impasto in any medium… such fun watching you. Thank you for taking the time to show how you work. Love these Yellow lovelies! There is a thickening medium called Aquapasto to thicken Watercolour paint, for this type of pallet knife technique if anyone is interested. It is transparent so keeps the beautiful lightness that Watercolour is about… Also there are a few mediums that can be added to Acrylic paint, made clear so they do not change the colour of the paint. Look for impasto gel mediums not modelling paste. I use an Australian brand of structure acrylic paint which is wonderful for impasto application with a brush or palette knife for all kinds of impasto effects. I am left handed and have never heard of left handed people having any trouble painting, many famous artists are left handed too, such a funny thing to say? Think of it like buttering bread… left or right handed people can both do it 😂 Cheers
Only just found you today. Subscribed! You make it all look so easy and I know it’s not 😆. I’m an over thinker…working fast and loosely usually ends up looking like an amateur/immature mess for me. Hope to improve sometime soon. Love your happy energetic approach to art
Well impasto is not straight forward and can be very humbling!! I maybe should do some in depth demos for people. Right now I’m just enjoying sharing my own mark making and the wwe guided bit is a bonus. But let me know if I can help you with anything! Happy Monday
Ah hello New Hampshire!!! My husband’s cousin used to live there. Have you snow right now!? How wonderful that my video reached you. Enjoy and thank you for giving this a go!!
Yes we are near Dartmouth College prior we lived way up north Berlin area. Myself and my granddaughter are going to start at the beginning and work our way through your teachings. Thank you for being here especially during these times. ❤❤
I get like that too!! In fact when I was painting this and could barely see because it was around the corner and at an angle, I immediately thought “ flip, what is this!?”. But just remember wirh palette knife, the outcome is ALWAYS intriguing and the rules for it are not the same as paintbrush. Enjoy the demo and thanks again
You seem like a lovely person but to me this is awful. If you took away the vase and ask someone what it is, no one would ever say daffodils. This whole tutorial was very hard to follow. No way did they ever look like a flower even. Sorry. But to a beginner of this medium, this was nothing but weird and confusing.
To OP: That was an unnecessary and cruel comment. Work on some emotional maturity. What did you get out of being that rude? The painting was fine, it just wasn't your taste which is also fine. Your comment wasn't fine.
Such a rude comment. Hope you feel better saying that because I would feel terrible saying such cruel comment to someone that is giving her time for you. So sad.
