  • “Raising Standards” was the theme for this year’s “Giants of Steam” Autumn Gala, featuring no less than four British Railways Standard Class Locomotives along with the popular Hall Class locomotive No.6989 ‘Wightwick Hall’ and Maunsell Q Class 0-6-0 No.30541. The Gala also featured the Metropolitan rake of four coaches, Maunsell Carriages dating from 1923-39, Southern Railway designed Bulleid Carriages dating from 1945-52 along with a selection of BR Mk 1 coaching stock and the GNR Director’s Saloon. The weather remained good for most of the day, with the trees taking on an autumnal look the scene was set for an excellent day. Please join me to watch the engines come off shed ready for the day ahead, in this video we cover the whole line and take a look around the beautifully kept stations with their pretty flower beds still in bloom.

Hello Peter, the weather was good for the time of year, one short rain storm and enough clouds in an otherwise blue sky to add a little drama to the scene. The Bluebell Railway deserve to be congratulated for putting on a show that was a credit to everyone involved. Thank you for your kind comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers. Tim.

Hello Hans, it's always a pleasure to visit the Bluebell Railway, it has a wonderful collection of locomotives and vintage carriages. A substantial amount of the rolling stock can now be stored undercover helping to keep it in good condition.
I'm sorry to hear that the excavator is causing a stink ☹, hopefully the problem will soon be fixed and you will once again be able to relax with a 🍺. Cheers. Tim.

Yes, very good stuff there, Tim. At least your event didn't get cancelled twice in the same year like our Steamfest did. Steamfest had been cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid, but this year, 2022 the even was set to return in April but heavy rain caused postponement to the last weekend of July, and, wouldn't you know it, rain and lots of it came and Maitland Station was flooded! The station hadn't seen that much water since the floods of 1955. The Steamfest organisers just couldn't take a trick. Keeping fingers crosse that all turns out well for April, 2023 when Steamfest can be staged at its traditional time of the year.

Hello Neil, it was a good event with typical weather for the time of year, we've been lucky over here, a good summer and so far a relatively mild Autumn although we've had some heavy rain in the last few days. I'm sorry to hear that Steamfest, after the scourge of Covid was lost yet again, this time due to poor weather. I hope the weather is kind for the April 2023 show, no doubt you will be there to record the event on video. Take care. Tim.

Hi, this was Britain's first standard gauge heritage railway, running it's first trains in 1960. My parents took me there, I took my own children there and as someone old enough to drawn my state pension I still enjoy visiting the railway. It's good to know you are enjoying this trip through the pretty Sussex countryside (my home county)

Great memories there for an ex-Sussex man, and all beautifully filmed as usual, Tim. I didn't know it ran to East Grinstead and connected to the mainline now - my last visit was on a trip "home" more than 10 years ago. I guess that must have increased its popularity. The railway has grown enormously, too with all that rolling stock. And of course the route has everything - great scenery, cuttings, embankments, bridges, tunnels, and lots of steam - what more could you want?

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Год назад

Hi Jim, the East Grinstead connection with the main line has made a significant difference, Londoners can now reach the railway directly be train, stock transfers are possible by rail and diesel hauled rail-tours can also access the line. Whilst Sussex doesn't posses the most dramatic scenery in the UK, it is nevertheless a pretty county as can still be seen from the train. As you point out the railway has it all, viaducts, tunnels, under and over bridges, along with some of the best stations to be found in the UK, especially Horsted Keynes, with plenty of sidings and covered accommodation for the beautifully restored coaching stock. It also possess a fine array of pre-grouping locomotives, although quite a number are awaiting their turn in the workshops. The railway still has a lot to do, with the possibility of a westward extension to Ardingly and a turning triangle or turntable at Horsted Keynes to facilitate the turning of visiting steam hauled rail-tours. There is plenty to look forward to. Cheers. Tim.

    When I was young
Our family lived one house away from the train tracks.
    My mom had 8 children
She was so busy making baby formula, washing diapers and our clothes
    Hung the laundry outside.
Cooking cleaning and schoolwork with my siblings.
I and my next door neighbor 2 boys 2 years older than me… we played on the train tracks!!!
    My mom didn’t know.
The train had soot and sometimes the pieces of soot got in my eyes.
I lived on Lockwood Ave Elberon NJ
Later we moved to Deal NJ
A full block away from train tracks but I lost my interest in train tracks but would wave high to the engineers.
Later I would walk from Deal NJ to Elberon NJ to catch the train to Long Branch NJ
I was a nurse’s aide and the train station in long branch nj was across from the hospital I worked at.
I was afraid to drive and didn’t get my drivers license until we moved to Irasburg Vt. I was 23.
This has been a great video love the scenery the people the train whistle and of course the steam.
    You made me so happy.

Your childhood years must have been challenging at times, with your mother being so busy and not having enough hours in the day to give all her children enough of her time, at least you had the boys next door to play with, even if they did encourage you to be naughty and play on the railroad tracks. Like you, I also lived just a block or two away from a railway line most of life, the creeks along the South Coast were also my playground, fishing, sailing, canoeing and playing football were all a big part of my formative years. I was lucky, I had a good childhood, living mostly in country villages around Chichester with my Mum, Dad, brother and sister. I left school at 16 to serve an apprenticeship as a toolmaker, whilst studying engineering at day release and evening school. I have always worked as a toolmaker and product/tool designer, even as I write this I'm using the computer that is running one of my CNC milling machines. I used to employ people, but these days I work in a workshop located in my back garden. My kids always used to know where to find me, if I wasn't in my workshop, I was building my model railway, they'd chat to me as I worked, at the time I didn't realise how much that time would influence them. My son is a toolmaker in New Zealand, my eldest daughter, after working with horses for many years, is now a signaller on the railways and my youngest daughter used to borrowed my 3D printer to make things, she later taught 3D printing and designing, now she teaches 3D printing, laser cutting and designing at London University.
The Bluebell Railway has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember and being a regular visitor, I've got to know some of the volunteers who work there. It has been my pleasure to share this video with you.

Hello Robert, the Bluebell Railway has a wonderful collection of rolling stock, the carriages are restored to a very high standard and they have an extensive collection of pre-grouping locomotives. The stations often feature on TV in programs such as "Poirot". I noticed the deer when I was editing the video, it was one of several seen on the day, both inside and outside of the railways boundary fence 🙂.
