- A interesting railway vid now, a train running along the street! Back in 1993 Hertfordshire Railtours (i seem to recall) ran a tour down to Weymouth and then a couple of trips along the Weymouth Tramway to the Quay. The tramway leaves the main rail network just outside Weymouth Station passes by to the west of it and heads off along the roads of Weymouth to the quayside. It was used by boat trains years ago but fell into disuse. Although it runs along roads the trackbed is Network Rail land and there are Bye-laws in place re parking over the rails! After riding on the first trip i filmed the second one seen here in the pouring rain! The train is preceeded by two railway staff to warn people the train is coming. As you can see there is room for cars to pass alongside the train as it rolls along! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!
I was in a Weymouth a few months ago and walked the line. It must be the inner geek in me!
A lot of people walk old railway lines, it's a lot of fun to still see what remains of them.
Admit it, you were scouting out the line to see how easy it would be to rob the metalwork with the rest of your scouse mates.
I am building a model railway and I am going to incorporate this line on my layout as a tribute to this line so that it will live on in Model form
That sounds like a great idea......
My understanding is that although they have now covered the tracks they were covered with a rubber type coating before the surfaced so the line could be reinstated if needed. I can remember GWR pannier tanks taking the trains through the streets. Lovely video brought back great memories.
I'm pleased you like it. That's a very clever way to cover the track over, obviously not a railway idea then!
Incredible footage. No idea why they discontinued such an unintrusive, seamlessly integrated service! 😉
Lol........!
When I was a child on holiday in Weymouth the locomotives were steam. They had an old Pannier Tank loco with a cow catcher.
That must have been even more fun with a steam loco!
Brilliant Brilliant sight. Train going down the street.
Next they'll have cars running down the centre of railway tracks.
Imagine opening your curtains only to see a trian going down the street
Yes, great fun!
I remember in my 2010 visit to The U.K i walked along part of the old Weymouth Quay Branch up to the terminus. Even though Regular Boat Trains ceased in September 1987 they still kept it open for occasional specials especially when they had the 50th anniversary of The D-Day Landings in Normandy on June 6th 1994 but they closed the old branch around the turn of the 21st century i think. But despite the weather it was an interesting clip to watch.
It was cold as well as very wet but i still went to video it! The last shot was filmed in a park under a little shelter to keep the rain off the camera.
Cars driving on either side .....imagine that today ....absolutely unreal 👍
There was only cars on one side of the train, but that's quirky enough!
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus in the second half of the video the cars are driving down the left hand side
Traveled along here in 1965 on a school trip to Jersey. Steam pulled. Couldn't believe that we went along the main road.
That would have been really good, travelling this line by steam....lucky man!
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus we went from Aldershot to Woking by electric, but went on a small steam train to Basingstoke and caught the Weymouth Express, actually it was 1966, because there was a seamans strike which delayed our return. We had to attend school in Jersey for a week or two, until they decided to fly us back. We returned to Portsmouth airport, which had a grass runway, it no longer exists and is now an industrial estate. The extra cost of the flight cost us ten shillings each. So unfortunately our return to Aldershot was by coach, much less exciting.
A clear example of a line laid and used at a time where few cars were on the road. Unsurprisingly it is no longer in use.
I saw this on another video. Shame this doesn’t run anymore. I saw the BR staff having to move cars out of the trains path.
Yes, cars do park over the lines even though the railway put up plenty of notices that a train is going to be running.
Ever since I was a kid I've always been fascinated by trains running through the streets, have you got any more of these fantastic videos. 😎 👍
Sadly, this is my only one.
I used to go on that train in the 1960 to Guernsey
Straight to the dockside and on the boat-perfect!
What a fantastic sight shame it will never happen again or will it? Thanks for sharing!!! 👍🙂
My pleasure......
David, no it won't. The local council have removed the line by now. They got permission in 2021. It's now 2022 at the time of writing, so the tramway has been assigned to the history books or videos in this case.
I was somthing months old that time🇬🇧
Bonkers! Nearly ran a red as well! 😀
I was on that train
There Goes Casey Jones!
Looks Like Our Comments Are Merged,@Percy Harry Hotspur!
awesome video Soi Buakhao :)
Thank you, a very weird experience.....
Hey soi hope your ok fantastic video again soi I was wondering if you know if the line is still there and if so do train's still operate on it for tours look forward to seeing your next video kind regards from JASON 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Alll well my end. I have been out & about again recently with my vid cam to make new YT vids. The Weymouth line is still down and was mothballed for years. If it hasn't officially shut, Network Rail certainly want to do it so i doubt it will ever be used again.
The line is still In place but hasn’t been used since 1999, they have agreed to rip the line up work starts on October 5th this year so if you wanna see it I’d get down there sharpish
All sadly pulled up 😢
Yes, another bit of quirky railway history now gone......
Excellent
Does this line still exist. 😱
This is the craziest thing I have ever seen in the UK.
Yes, it is mothballed but is still extant
Line still there no trains anyone
What about jabbing children with an experimental drug when they've been told it shouldn't be done by their advisers?
It's gone forever
Bonus glimpse of a Southern National Ford Transit! Desirable Fiesta XR2 with go-faster stripes 0:58.
Do traffic lights apply to trains?
I'm don't know on that one? I think as it's technically a railway where a road has been laid around it that you probably don't have to obey them.
No, traffic lights do not apply to trains
The line Is still there no trains anymore
Bet it must of been amusing to see a train on the road.
I think a few car drivers got a shock to see a train alongside them!
4:24 Looking at the leading bogie, are those spoked wheels?? And again at 5:15, barely visible on the right hand side of the screen?
Reminds me of Michigan City in Indiana.
Do you have trains running along the roads there? Perhaps you could film it and put it up! I'd love to see it........
109 would be gone soon after a collision in spring 94..
A sad end, i've had a few miles behind her on various railtours....
It's preserved on the east lancs isn't it.....
It's now on the East Lancs i believe
Are you sure 109 had a an accident? It was earning its keep till early 97, even going for a run up the chesham branch mid 96...
Unreal
Crazy isn't it? Imagine hitting the train and filling out an insurance claim! lol.....
Nice footage of that 38 stock at the end there. Was that Queens park station?
Yes, it's a clip from my Queens Park Underground video. I use it to upload the end cards over.
Now thats something you dont see everyday
Definatly something a bit unusual.....
Yup, I haven't seen the old B&Q logo for years 😉
@@georgeprout42 takes you back dosnt it. I wish it cudda stayed like that
@@georgeprout42 I hadn't noticed that before, well spotted!
Vastly more traffic than in 1969
The sad story all over, it's why we need more rail lines again....
Very similar to Fred iveys video
have the rails now been filled in in the road?
Still there but not used.
Would be quicker to just get off at Weymouth station and walk to the boat
Special boat trains would run direct from Waterloo, passengers tended to have a lot of luggage!
I'd rather have the 33 down the road.
When's the last time a train came down this line?
That i'm not sure, this working may have been the last time?
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Last time was in 1999 with top and tail 73s on a Pathfinder tour.
@@jackettr Thanks for the info. A shame that the line is about to be ripped out and lost forever......
Almost a SPAD at 1:15
Lol.....Not too sure on that (see other comment)
Not at all nearly a SPAD, last signal is (and still there) at the spur from the mainline. As a bobby I thought you’d know that 🤣
I appreciate it’s difficult to put tone onto a comment but you do realise I was making a joke about the pelican crossing, it was either the spad comment or the signal stepping up to a signal flashing yellow aspect.
@@WesternSignalman I realise you were joking but it is an interesting point, would a train have to stop? Technically no as it's a railway but as a driver you have to stop short of any obstruction....but it's all good fun......happy viewing.....
Forgive me I’m not trying to cause an argument just wanted to clear the air. I wondered the same and it’s certainly something not covered in the rule book, maybe a local instruction in the sectional appendix, maybe not back then but in today’s world of where there’s a blame I’m sure if a user pressed the button on the crossing the train would have to stop, if they still ran ran that route.
Piddling down as usual
Yes, it would have been nice if it was dry! That's why some of the shots are from under a canopy in a park!
