This is a fantastic review, very detailed and particular. I am looking at buying a chromatic either a 270 or 270 Deluxe. I like the design and the ease of dismantling that the 270 Deluxe offers. The 270 construction (nails) is very much like a classic Hohner Marine Band diatonic and is the cheaper of the two for this reason. Sound wise, I do agree with one comment that the 270 has a darker sound. For me, it may the choice at this time, considering the type of music I want to use it for; blues , rock and jazzy type stuff.
Hi. It’s a great review. But I regret buying 270. Should had ordered 270 deluxe. 270 square holed Hohner is a worst I purchased. So much air loss. Have to blow hard
Nice review. I actually own both. But you should have included the Discovery 48. It's based on the Chromonica 270. It is not only beefier in size and weight, but the slide is zigzag, which I prefer over both shown in the video.
Very interesting comparison! 😊 Playing a instrument so small, makes the small differences big. Especially if you need to play for long periods of time.
Thank you, chromatic harmonica is very sensitive on every thing you change. No matter design or material. That's why so many combination out there for selection.
Hi Owen. Excellent presentation. I have two Hohner Chromonica,s 270 and one Hohner Chromonica 280 C I much prefer to play the 270 (12 hole) than the 280 (16) hole. The 16 hole far too cumbersome for me. I also prefer the square hole, however the round hole is more comfortable The main thing I got from this is when I buy a new one I would definitely choose the DELUX model, because of the screw removal of the reed plates. I am scared of removing the reed plates on my 270's for fear of damaging the cones. Is there a tool you can suggest for removing nails safely . Thanks again Owen, I got a lot out of it.
Hi, thanks for watching, there are so many ways to open up the nail, you can use a knife, cutter (bigger size ) flat screw driver or anything that are flat and hard. When you open it up, you need to pay attention on your hand, be gentle and slow to put in the cutter or knife in the gap that between the comb and reedplate. Do it slowly, it is not too difficult to open up the reedplate, as the wooden comb are male by pearwood. Try to do it on left side then only slowly move to middle and right side. On the right side there is a spring nail attached to the reedplate, you can pull up the whole reedplate slowly after you saw the gap between comb and reedplate are getting bigger. I wish you enjoy on this process.
The back ( inside) of the mouthpiece is extremely rough (10:17). The result is a lot of air loss. I sanded it completely smooth and then polished it. The improvement is noticeable in a quicker response and less fatigue.
@@owenharmonica Thank very much for your quick response. I’ve played 270’s for years and the mouth piece is removed much more than the reed plates. Though I appreciate Hohner mounting the read plates with machine screws. I feel it’s short sighted and lazy to not include this with the mouth piece when producing the deluxe.

Your video really helps. I have a 270 myself and play it for months and I find my lips get dry easily and can't practise further. Do you think it's because of the mouthpiece design or material of the instrument? Any other tips? Thanks.
Hi, this is very command issue that beginner will get dry on the lips when you play on the harmonica. That's why you can look closing on most of the good player video, whenever there is a rest gap between music note, we will use tongue to moist the lips to continue playing. This is also part of the technique need to be learn. Hope you can get it and enjoy when you play.
Owen, do you ever play other keys of the 270? Or do you stick with key of C no matter the key signature? And why not play the Super 64 instead? Curious about your thoughts on this. thanks. Great video by the way - the deluxe tone really came through, and the duet at the end was wonderful.
Hi, thanks for support and watching my video. I have came across to play different key before, as my hearing is fix C, and I get confusion when I play different key. For example when I play Bb key, in C major is draw note, but in Bb major is blow note, I will draw the note immediately when I hear Bb, so I prefer C major for myself. I do agree that using different key to play some of the songs are better in result. It depends on your choice. For 16 holes I do have super 64, 64x, hearing 16,n CBH 2016. I will also do a review on that.
It is depend on your need, personally i will choose 270 Deluxe because the reeds is longer and it can produce more deep n colourful tone but some of the player would like 270 as well, because it can play n control very easily on the sound as the reeds is short.

Sve ove hromatske su vrhunske dok su nove.Ja imam tri super chromonike 270 ali posle dve godine nisu ni blizu onom nivou kvaliteta zvuka iako ih nisam koristio intenzivno.
Hi, I think most of the harmonica player had the similar issue like you do. the condensation are a challenge to the sticky valve. I had an experience where when I perform live in show, it will be very easy to get sticky valve. But with one exception, I use the same playing method while playing slow tune. In slow tune, is very easy to get sticky valve as holding long note in the same hole will very easy to contain water mist in the comb, reed and reedplate. It will end up sticky valve. I over come this issue with a new harmonica, where you didnt do practice on it or you may change the new reedplate while you perform. The best way is prepare 2 same harmonica to switch around while you had issue. The whole song I perform didnt had any sticky valve at all, although the water mist is still inside the comb and reedplate. So maintenance and hygiene become a very important part to avoid sticky valve. There is no 100% resolve on this sticky valve as our body naturally will had water mist while air blowing out. Another way is cut shorter the valve in order to make the valve don't stick too much on the surface. It still can play and little scarify on the air leak. This can be work to pro long the playing time. For the screw part. I think it is the basic setting, for wooden comb it always had a challenge that if you open the comb too much time, it will lead to air leak issue. So maybe plastic comb or metal comb is more easy for maintenance. Hope this help you. Cheer.
