I grew up in west Texas in a Mexican family and I thought everyone did this. I didn’t realize it was a cultural thing until I came to North Carolina. Chasing my cousins around and cracking the eggs on their heads is one of my favorite Easter memories growing up!
Right?! It’s the best tradition! And then you find confetti around your house for the rest of the day. 😆

Ahh! Good clean, silly fun. These are symbolic of my childhood. I grew up making these with my mom . She used to save the eggs all year and then we'd make them for Easter and whatever was left over, we donated to our church for their summer bazaar. Once we even got our married family members and neighbors to save the eggs for us and we donated 200 cascaraones to the church. We used the Paas egg coloring kit and instead of traditional glue, we used to make a paste of flour and water, apply it onto the tissue paper and then onto the cascarones. Now as a mom myself, I went with the Elmer's glue method. So much fun.
Thanks so much for sharing your story! I have similar memories of making these every year with my mom. We would place the eggshells on our kitchen windowsill to let them dry and then make these as a family. Now my boys look forward to it each year. It’s such a special tradition and great fun too. Ok thank you. I thought maybe there was a “trick” like soaking them in vinegar or something. The last couple of years that I’ve made them, I’ve noticed they are very hard, I’m scared to hit people on the head with them. Might knock them out! I’m serious they are so hard!
Ha ha! Yeah, I could see your concern! They do get soaked in vinegar when you dye them, but I’m not sure if that keeps them more brittle. A lot can depend on the eggs and how thick the shells are naturally. I always tell people to crack the egg in your hand over someone’s head rather than cracking it “on” their head too. Hope that helps!
If you save the eggs all year long, how do you keep them from getting hard?
I’ve never had an issue with them changing. They stay pretty much the same for me. I’d say we typically use them within a year or so.
I think its a fun tradition, but it should be stuffed with paper or rice, or some kind of natural material. It shouldn't be a detriment to environment just because we think its fun.
Fair point. You can choose to use biodegradable confetti or dried flowers too. You can also make your own confetti using biodegradable paper and a hole punch.
We did the same saving eggs shells and filling them. We saved enough that we made jello eggs as well. Wash the inside of eggs well and when jello firm we cracked the egg and wrapped the jello egg in plastic wrap and refrigerate. For the confetti eggs on one egg we put like a $20.00 bill just to make it more interesting. We had a large family so we needed a lot of eggs which was more work but so much fun.
I love all of those traditions! I feel cheated now since I never got a $20.😂 It’s funny that it seems like just confetti eggs, but really it’s so many good family memories wrapped up in the tradition. I can’t imagine Easter without them. I’ll have to try your jello idea. Thanks for sharing your take!
We filled hollowed eggs with candy and covered the opening with tissue paper that we attached by dotting glue around the opening. The openings were a bit larger to accommodate the candy. Then the adults would hide some of the eggs and put others in Easter baskets. Some would also be given to elderly friends and relatives. To fill the eggs, we would have a table set out with various candies and we would scoop small amounts of each candy into each egg. The candies were M&Ms, jelly beans, peanuts (not a candy I know🙂) nonpareils, and topped with a chocolate star.

The holes you made are way to big unless your wanTing to put prizes inside or messages . For just regular confetti eggs you want the hole to be about the size of a straw
