    My husband and I have been going through our finances as well. We’ve had to make some hard decisions in reducing our expenses to save money and build wealth. We’ve always lived paycheck to paycheck in our marriage of nearly 8 years. I am proud to say that we just have paid our car off. We are a one car family. I’d love to be able to sell enough items to buy another vehicle in cash, but right now is not the time. So for now, we are collecting dollar bills and watching our bank account grow. We are doing this for our family and our children. The hard work will pay off.

    I’m 50 and this was a great reminder to stay on track with my budget and saving goals etc. I’m lucky and grew up with a mum who set a great example on how to make a little go a long way and never felt like we did without. I manage the finances in my marriage and apply a lot of the same habits. Always having a budget. We have a lot of sub accounts in our bank account. Each pay everything is immediately sorted into the different accounts (daily living, bills, pets, emergency, large item savings, long term savings etc etc). It’s worked so well for us and if the money isn’t enough to make a new purchase we wait and make do. Sometimes dollars get shuffled around from different accounts to cover a big bill or something but that’s ok. The thing that hit home for me was when you said about not charging what I’m worth. That’s always been a issue for me with my handmade items. I’m always too scared to charge a fair amount thinking I’m not worth it and people won’t pay it etc…definitely need to work on my self worth.

    • @backfromburnout
      @backfromburnout  5 месяцев назад +1

      You sound like you’re doing a great job with your budgeting! Before I did reselling I was a family photographer and I never charged my worth. It was emotionally draining and the pricing part of the business was my biggest struggle and it made me not enjoy the business. I felt so uncomfortable taking the money for my photography from my clients, I’d often work for free and then I would always question if my clients liked the photos (even though they all continued to come back and obviously did!). In reselling I notice the equivalent is putting low ended items into my store that make very little profits and are not really worth the time involved. I need to have more self belief now I can run a store filled with higher priced items.

    • @farmgirl1560
      @farmgirl1560 5 месяцев назад

      @@backfromburnout yep I’m exactly the same with my art and jewellery. I’m just in the process of repricing everything. If it kills my sales so be it. It’s not worth it to keep doing it with my current profits. I’m plugging it into my excel formula and whatever it spits out is what I’m listing it at. Trying to take the emotion out of pricing. Postage and materials etc have all gone up. If everyone else can up their prices then I can too 😜.

    (No hate, just an honest opinion from the other side of the fence.) You're so lucky you had decades where a man looked after it all for you. I say this as a woman in my late 30s, living alone for a decade and having to make my own way in this world. I envy women that got to kick back and be looked after financially for most of their adult lives, even if it means you may have to support yourself (like the rest of us!) for a few years now. You were lucky to not have to worry about it for 3 decades (and have already moved on with Tom, i.e. never had to spend more than a year alone, fending for yourself).
    Best of luck on your new chapter and I have 100% faith that you will flourish and prosper like never before. A side benefit of not having a man to rely on (although you do have Tom) is that your confidence in yourself grows, and you realise you're actually more knowledgable and good at this money thing than you once thought!! xx

She raised her children and took care of things at home while her husband was away. She was working too. If you had children, you would understand that.

    The way I look at habits sometimes is like what I learned in geometry class. Complete congruence with the person that you want to be a triangle that is slightly bigger than another triangle is not congruent to that triangle. If I want to be wealthy and successful, I need to be completely congruent with the type of person that lives that lifestyle.

    Love the real talk Mel.
    I’m going to be the negative Nancy though 😂.
    I look at it on the other hand. What’s the point in making heaps of money if you can’t spend it 🤷‍♂️.
    I like collecting because it’s a bit of an escape. Finding rare pieces for collections is legit a dopamine fix daily.
    I think it’s also great for the mental health, pop into a whole other world and look for items purely for the love rather than the money. And I guess if it ever came to a point where I was desperate for money, I’ve got something on the shelf I can probably quickly flip and get that fast cash.
    Lots of people aren’t attached to things and don’t need things like this though. Which there’s nothing wrong with that of course. You’re definitely going to have more of those dollar bills.
    Although I feel like collecting also comes into play for a lot of people who suffer from things like ADHD, autism and also anxiety depression etc.
    It comes to a point though where you can go silly and collect too much and then it becomes “hoarder” territory. That’s probably unhealthy and something I could easily fall into the trap of lol.
    Always love to hear what people are talking about on both sides of the boat though. As long as I’ve got money to pay the bills and support my family. I’ll always collect 👌.

    • @backfromburnout

      I think if it’s something you value and get joy from then it’s fine as long as you’re not in other debt. I can see why some people like collecting things. Techs plan was always to save save save and invest so he could build passive income and then retire early and have a 50 year holiday traveling the world. So that’s what he aligned his habits to do. Now he’s 38 years old and slowing down and about to embark on that big long holiday. I think he said the other day he and his wife have already done over 30 trips away this year always which is so good. Very smart money management, mindset and skills to be able to do that.

    Being the AHMazing bookseller you are, see if you have the book; Overcoming Underearning by Barbara Stanny. It's a classic book especially for women & I read it in the 90s. It's a quick & easy read & there are a handful of decent "quoteables" in the book. I used that book with some of my clients (I'm a former psychotherapist) in therapy sessions to build up their self-worth on all levels (my own as well, because I have always underearned and highly educated, but due to health issues had to work part-time & then eventually stopped working). I also used the term, "energy dollars" to make sure that we're spending our energy in the ways that we want to spend it so there's an abundance of physical dollars & energetic dollars, they go hand in hand. As the life coach & author Cheryl Richardson says; "I'm teaching what I have to learn". Just keep at the YT videos, we all love you & support you!! :)

    Self reflection is always good. Just be sure to keep things as light as you can, keep having fun. Yep earning is important but enjoy those moments. Its interesting you used the term "snowball". I just finished that book (audiocd) a sort of autobiography of warren buffet who has been one of richest men in the world. He has lived very simply and frugally. yet will invest billions to buy out a company LOL. An interesting read. Sadly he was so buried in his work, I believe he eventually lost his lovely wife...well she drifted away needing a "life" of her own - since she really didn't have one with him once the kids left. And it really upset him. I believe its balance myself. Men especially will focus 100% on work (my ex did) and everything else is secondary. Its what they are taught by the men in their lives. BUT I believe you can earn a great wage and still have a full and exciting life. I did. My ex actually was angry that I made more money than him and he felt he worked harder. He probably did. Hard work doesn't always mean more $. Working smarter does, not harder. Don't collect dollars, collect experiences, family, friends...

      @@backfromburnout I'm sure you will! You are often laughing, singing as you work...seem to make friends everyplace you go..keep that up. You are doing so well. I know sometimes we get impatient to change things NOW, but look back over your journey, see how far you've come. You are doing fantastic. Bravo. And yes I found Warren to be lovable. I was sad he lost touch with is 1st wife. It was clear he truly loved her. We should learn from that. I believe the same thing happened in my own marriage. My husband was obsessed with the fact I made 3X his income and he was a registered architect, designing million dollar dream homes. His best friend tried to tell him, man, I wish I had what you have: beautiful wife, family property....but he couldn't hear it, as he know is he had to "beat" me (win the $ game) and he lost me in the process. Anyway, you are a winner. And we are all here cheering you on!

    So here is my thought and question, when you ship orders and tell us this sold for $39.99 and you are very excited about that. My first question has always been, what did YOU pay for shipping because that cuts into your profit. I don't know what shipping costs are in Australia, but I think you should have your own flat rate shipping costs. If you pay $15 90% of the time, then you should incorporate a $7.50 shipping fee on all orders. This way sometimes you will make money and sometimes you won't. At least it will increase your profits. I hope this makes sense to you.

    • @backfromburnout
      @backfromburnout  5 месяцев назад

      I incorporate the shipping costs into the “free” postage. It’s not really free, just a different psychological way of selling.
