Im actually a lifeguard so what i can say is that typically not all people should be rescuing any drowning victim. If they are active, then it's a sure-fire way to put both of you in more danger. You need something for conscious victims to grab onto to to float, we have rescue tubes. Other than that, a passive victim is easier to rescue as you don't need to worry about them latching on and not letting go.
Escape method for someone latching onto you is to grab under their biceps and just push up and away.

that's why u should always be rescuing a conscious casual with a torpedo body so u can do a defensive block on them.

As a beginner swimmer of 3-4 months, I had to pull up a kid who was struggling to stay afloat but the effort the kid up was making to keep his head up almost made me go down. It for sure wasn't as smooth as this.

Then you hold your breath, sink and use your hands on their stomach to push them away. Keep doing so until you can grab a hold of them correctly from the back and help them

The best way to save someone who is struggling in the water is to have a floating device with you. IF YOU ARE NOT A PROFESSIONAL, DO NOT EVER TRY TO RESCUE SOMEONE WITHOUT A FLOATING DEVICE.

I was a kid at summer camp when I wanted to teach some other kid how to swim. It was a very shallow beach, with no drops at all. We spent some time out, played, I showed him the frog but he struggled a little. So while walking around (the water was to our chins but we could stand) he would sink in a small hole, 2x5m maybe. Nothing huge and only like 50cm deeper. You can hop up and catch air while you hope to shallower water.
Anyway, he panicked, I try to help and he kept pushing my head under water, so after a while I elbowed him and dragged him by his hairs to the dry all the way.

I can float and swim on my back and on my sides with one hand, but I can't float vertically or swim face down. I wish I could overcome my fear and become a professional.

    • @jerryhall5709

It's difficult to float vertically because of the smal surface of the body being pushed upwards by the water.

Blow bubble out of your nose, with your nose below the water line, and your eyes above it. Get used to that. Plug your nose with air bubbles on their way out

It's critical to pull the victim's butt from the water, otherwise during CPR you'll be pumping the pool out through them.

I would like to see this also. Just had a horrible situation helping an adult struggling in open water. I had to swim while assisting them. They were conscious and trying but struggling to swim. So I could not turn and swim backwards with them. Luckily there was a pier nearby and someone noticed and threw a ring to us.
