When Seungmin heard the original unreleased guide Han recorded for Volcano, he immediately wanted it for himself. But Han said Volcano was the one song that was very personal for himself, and he declined Seungmin's request.

I love that music can be interpreted in ways for each person. Many people have said this is their gay anthem. “To me you’re already a sin” is a line that queer stays have said means a lot to them because of the religious trauma they’ve faced due to being queer.
Yup... that's where my brain went immediately 😭
They tell you that loving/or being that person is a sin. So what can get worse? Among the cold and harsh waves, because you're already a sin anyway.
‘take me to you, way below the to the end of the ground’ which for me, if i am looking at it through a queer lens, says a lot. many still call being gay a sin and that you’ll go to hell for it but this song does feel very comforting even in that aspect. like yeah, it’s ok. i love you so much that i’ll follow you anywhere, even if it burns me down. i’ll choose to love you over and over
//edit: also, VOLCANO could be interpreted as both love and hell.

as a queer person who is (currently) living in a country that deems both queer people and LGBT+ allies extremist organisation members, i cried the first time i listened to volcano. it was so beautiful to me, so close to what was happening inside my heart. i still cannot listen to this song enough, there's simply no concept of listening to it "too many times". it will never get "old" for me, even if one day i manage to migrate to another country.
I heard Han mention in a live that "you're already a sin" means you're already a temptation.

I love your interpretation of "you can hurt me next [to you]" as looking past someone's behaviour of lashing out to those they love the most as the need to be comforted and old wounds resurfacing. Han is a really deep thinker, so you might be onto something when you talk about him looking past the hurt to see a vulnerable heart.
I agree with the people saying there's a lot of queer religious trauma symbolism in there, the whole "sin", "below the ground" (in hell), "burn me" (yet again hell), "you're sweeter than evil" (as in: how could seomthing like this be truly evil) way to read it, but even when looking past that, what it comes down to is a person that's very explosive at times, their temper so hot it burns and melts - but that heat is also love, and Han acknowledging as the poetic speaker that his choice would always be his "you", that volcano is so pure and genuine T.T I love this song
(and to all the MinSungers out there: yes, melting into one and being reborn and reborn together and choosing the same person sounds like soulmatism)
Han’s lyrics and music are always close to my heart. I love to read other people’s interpretations as I can try to see from other perspectives.
Each person has an interpretation of each Han Jisung song and identifies in different ways. It's very interesting. Personally, every time I listen to and think about the lyrics of his songs I feel like I'm doing a mental and emotional exercise because I identify with it and at the same time I analyze myself and then I try to see it from Han's perspective. and he asked me what he feels when writes. It is very exciting to be able to enjoy his art

Max, don't worry about Han's, be sure that this person loves, cherish and completely adores him. I think is more that at that time they thought to be bad for Han and Han was trying to make them understand that that's not true, that it's the complete opposite even if they can't believe it themselves.

I love how you go deep with the meaning of this song. I didn’t get some of those deep thoughts while listening to Volcano all I saw was Han saying “I love you no matter what” in different ways but to see past all of this and see how deep it could be or other perspectives of it. Thank you for always sharing your perspective and your friend is so good at conveying his thoughts and it is beautiful to hear you both.
actually some of the lyrics there, han used as free raps for lee know in weekly idol looooong ago, n some from other clips in skz whenever he talking bout lee know, n in his bubbles he was pointing it was song for his members but never disclosed the name, he said in his live how sungmin wanted this song but he didnt gv it coz it was personal, n volcano, han n lee know has volcanic couple bracelet, remember how sad han was when his bracelet broken n then how happy he was when they bought another volcanic couple bracelet in jeju. but despite all of this, Han said, this song its for "stay" . well, I'll take it is what it is, this song for stay.. i am Stay, so this song is for me, n I LOVE this song more than Alien

Ohh men I loved this! And the deep conversation and thoughts... You two are amazing "reeding between the lines"... I always thought that this song was more romanticaly inclined and super personal, even more when Seungmin asked to sing this one and Han declined, we know how Han is, he would give any music to the members sing, but this one is personal.

Hey Max! This is a bit random but i didnt know where else to write a comment:
I've stanned SKZ for a couple of years already- listening to their music, getting to know their personalities, watching a lot of content,...- yet, i've only recently watched an older episode of 2kidsroom from 4 years ago with hyunjin and changbin.
I came up with it because the two of them had mentioned it in their latest 2kidsshow episode (which i really enjoyed:)). There, they shortly talked about how they had had a fight before filming this older episode, and how you can kind of see it while watching it.
When i watched the older one, i was amazed.
Firstly, you can see how much they learned to understand each other better. When you watch the latest episode first, you can kind of see they fought before filming.(It's difficult to explain but they are tense, they aren't really answering the others questions directly, they talk about fighting with each other and with the other members, hyunjin tells changbin how he's been feeling intimidated by him lately and so on)
I was able to see them make up while filming (also because of the context they gave us in the new 2kidsshow episode).
Secondly, you can see HOW they learned to understand each other better. I was really impressed with their communication skills when i saw this. 2 young men sitting together and talking about their feelings and their relationship without being aggressive or rude, while obviously having some troubles in their relationship.You can tell they are a bit awkward and uncomfortable, but they know how important it is to sort this out (they even did this while being filmed!)
In the end, because i had watched the latest episode beforehand, i was able to understand what happend during their talk and how important it was looking back.
I can only recommend and appreciate you watching those two videos in the same order as me. It might be really interesting communication-wise!

When you said "and this could potentially not be healthy.."
That's what my thought at some of Han's songs are. At some of his songs it sounds like he's loving too hard that could potentially leading to toxic relationship.
Like what you said at 8:16 "there's fine line between being there for someone and being abused by someone"
I've experienced that too, and TMI, but I was really like VOLCANO when the song was release, even claiming the song as my love life anthem because the song feel so close to home.
At first I think it was good to be able to sacrifice myself to my partner, like, that was the most vulnerable relationship I had my whole life. And it was so romantic to capable of doing that. But yeah, it doesn't work in the end.
I was leaning to avoidant before I met my ex, but when I was in a relationship with them and when I just break up with them, I become really really anxious.

It is speculated by fans that Limbo is Minho's answer to Volcano so hopefully you can check it out. Personally I find that Volcano and Limbo's lyrics and soundtrack are coincidentally very harmonious. If you look it up, you'll find remixes of the two songs where the lyrics practially align like a conversation

Sometimes I feel bad for Han 😅 even knowing that he takes inspiration more from watching other people's relationships than from his own experiences (anyway, you have to be very sensible to be able to relate to others and write about it) Volcano is very special for him

I love how much you light up when you react to Han. He's so amazing. Idk if you've ever mentioned it before but I'm assuming Han is your bias. Changbin is my bias and I light up in the same way with him. I just love Straykids in general. They are simply incredible human beings ❤. Yeah I watched it for the first time and was like "this is NOT a healthy relationship 😬" because you can only hold someone else up for so long before your own mental health gets dragged down with it (guess how I know that lol. dw, that person and I are great now). Buuuuut realistically, every time I think we've gotten a Personal Experience Jisong™ it turns out he was writing about a relationship from an anime or kdrama again lol. Nothing's been confirmed about Volcano specifically afaik, but regardless, I do like this alternative take on it
Glad you're in a better place. Who knows what Han was thinking of when he wrote this, but he did say that the song was too personal for Seungmin to sing, he needed to do it himself. But regardless, the way he takes inspiration from anything and everything and then writes an amazing song with meaningful lyrics that people can actually relate to?... major talent ❤🌋

I think the "you're already a sin" line is "loving you is a sin, its too late, I'm in too deep." I feel there is a lot of queer subtext in this one, but that's just me.

When HAN released this song he went live and said the song was about STAY. That is why if he was reborn he would still do what he is doing today. His love for STAY and what he is doing with his music runs that deep.
