I left my corporate job, went to school for 2yrs and became a master esthetician. I’m currently attending a community college in Maryland to obtain my ADN. My goal is to ultimately open a medi spa. 🥰 For me going to a community college is the best route. Thank you for speaking positively about an associates degree in nursing. I wish more people did ✨

My ADN program was HARD. Our grads have a really good reputation in the local hospitals. It’s easy to complete an online BSN completion and employers are paying for some or all of the tuition. I became a RN for under $10,000.

As an LPN, I think you are a great teacher. Ive watched your videos for a while and I think the way you approach things make them seem clearer and more sensible.
I saw your vids on nurses "eating" their young. I have seen it first hand and I always tell new nurses (LPN or RN) to find somebody who WANT you to succeed. I appreciate all your videos, all your knowledge, and all your tips. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. They're more important than you know.

Good morning, I think it’s very wise in these times to pursue a ADN and yes, 1-2 classes at a time is just fine. Some people get too consumed thinking about time and how long it’s gonna take. You will get there, I’ve seen too many people do it, so I know it’s possible. Have a great weekend ❤️

Hi Kendra, I'm glad you mentioned the RN to BSN subject. It will be exactly six years on 10/16 that I have been an RN, and I needed to get a contract extension in August to continue working. I am in my LAST and only class in a BSN program, and still had to have a meeting with administrators about why I didn't meet my goal within the 5-year period agreed upon when I was hired; I got an extension last year. They looked at EVERY school term where I didn't attend classes (Ma'am, I'm not taking statistics or chemistry in the summer!) and asked for official transcripts from my community college and the school I presently attend. They were not playing. Most organizations only give you five years to complete your BSN, so if life starts happening, it can affect how long it takes. In my case, my floor became the "covid unit" in 2021, the same year I started at Old Dominion University, and I told my academic advisor that I was only signing up for ONE class my first semester, to help reduce my stress; this was after working on prereqs for years, as my school did not allow you to start without having them finished.
Then, in January 2022, my father passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack at the very hospital I work at, so I dropped my classes because mentally I was not all there. They literally made me write a statement this year; HR was involved, too. At one point I put in my resignation (because I've got options), but they convinced me to stay, go through with all of the paperwork, etc. So yeah, they need to "rush" when it comes to those BSN courses, start NEOW! LOL! I work with people who have been nurses for a couple of years and have not started at all. BABYYYY, I'm trying to tell 'em, okay! I have an extension until December 31, 2023. I will graduate on December 16. I'm never going to school again......I've been traumatized.

@@CrystalM1917 Girl, I had ONE school in my mind, and that is the one I was accepted to, and the only one I applied to. I don't do random online schools that I have never heard of or can only be reached through online correspondence; I graduated from ECPI many years ago and will never do that again (medical assisting). I chose a well-known University in my area that has a great reputation, family and friends have graduated from, plus, I don't do schoolwork at break-neck speeds, I write my own papers (AI, who?), never get any help unless it is from school staff/resources. Every school I have ever attended, I've graduated with honors; this will be my third degree. It's not how fast you do it, it's about getting it done MY way. Requirements may be different for certain schools, too. Congrats, though. Are you going back to school soon?
I've attended four colleges in my lifetime.
Sorry, but I can't go to the " Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing School of Nursing." Classes at my school are 16 weeks.

@@mimismith7183 LOL, I didn't mean to come off offensive whatsoever, but I forgot in my quick response that there is no account of tone through such a short message, so I apologize! But seriously, it just sounded like you were going thru so much, I feel like it would have been less stressful to do a shorter program in your situation. But, I understand, especially if you've had a lackluster online experience in the past. It was my first online program I've ever taken, so i have nothing to compare it to, but I had a good experience with Capella. It was intense, but I wrote all of my papers on my own and had to brush up on ALL THE THINGS, anotated bibliographies, Google sites, Power Points (I'm 37) lol, as I went along bc I've been out of school for a minute!! When I graduated from my ADN program back in 2010, there was no AI. So I had no idea these apps and such were available until I got to the end of the program, and someone else mentioned it in a Facebook group I was in. I was paraphrasing and quoting everything on my own merit from my own research. I used no apps! Only online guidelines for correct apa formatting. But thankfully, I've always been a good writer, even back in high school and nursing school, I really enjoy it, so it was ok with me. I had to brush up on APA quite a lot, but I got there! All my professors left great feedback and I felt I learned a great deal about aspects of nursing not covered in the technical college where I completed my LPN and ADN programs ...ofcourse those were focused on more of the hands on clinical aspects of nursing, as it should be....but I digress. I was paying out of pocket for my BSN, so speed was important for me and not to drag it out because I'm currently working remotely and my company doesn't offer tuition reimbursement. I plan on getting back to bedside soon so this will help me be more competitive for the positions I'm interested in, hopefully, and it's something I always wanted to do regardless. It is accredited and as long as my credits are transferable and I know i personally put in the hard work, just in an expedited amount of time, it does make me feel like I can accomplish even more. I am thinking about DNP but will take a break bc I want someone to pay for that one lol, plus working plus 2 kids + husband whonworks rotating shifts+ extended family obligations + church etc. Is a bit much at the moment. Will you go beyond your bsn degree as well? What are you future goals/plans?

@@CrystalM1917 Oh, I understand. I am not a true academic, never have been. I like learning, but not in the academic/school setting. The library is free! LOL! I'm at the end of my goal, only one class left, will graduate in December, so it's all good. I actually prefer online learning; I have never been to the campus of my current school and will not go until I graduate. The classroom drama is not for me. I didn't take any offense to what you said, we just have to take a different route in some cases. I have plans to start a tutoring business on zoom, for nursing students. I've always wanted a side hustle that I can work from home. No more earning degrees that only benefit the organization I work for.

Take your time, reduce your stress level (as much as can be achieved while going to nursing school) Based on your grades obtained taking prerequisites, you can move higher in the ranking as far as admission spots because your grades are higher. Some community colleges have articulation agreements to BSN programs, which almost automatically guarantees you a spot.

Hi Kendra! I have been following you for a while and I absolutely love your content. As a new grad Nurse Practitioner it’s disheartening to see so many black nurses say they are tired of nursing or don’t wanna practice anymore. I personally love this field and after sometime in nursing I’ve ended up in my favorite specialty “peds”. So I’m not sure if you have found your favorite yet but I encourage you to stay in it.Racism is REAL in nursing but it doesn’t out beat a GOOD NURSE. The majority of the racism comes from the coworkers and let’s be real we not at the bedside for the coworkers but for the patients. I totally agree with the associates route because you can go from adn to msn straight no bsn in between. What I will say is that MED SURG will wear a nurse out if you stay to long. Avoid it at all cost 😂😂😂😂

And it is crazy how even though we all have not met, we have a lot of the same experiences. Race will always play a role. I commented on your past video about that and the issues I faced with someone saying that race didn't matter. It especially matters when that belief then trickles to the the patient which was so disgusting to see and hear. Also, yes I agree get that ADN. It is the same thing I tell folks. You can do everything a BSN can. Unless you plan to advance your degree or get in management, you do not need that BSN. Save those coins lol.

Good morning! That is awesome that you’re already a cosmetologist. Here’s what I think, continue with the ADN, then you can always find a school that has a BSN-NP track. Or, you can do the ADN, then BSN then, NP.
When you get your RN license, take the botox and filler classes. You can start your beauty business, pay a doctor to be your medical director while you pursue your NP, then cut him/her out once you get the NP license. I hope that makes sense. ❤️

There are many avenues to getting a nursing degree. From the age of 12. I wanted to be a nurse. For me, I took the necessary classes (high level maths and sciences) in high school. I attended a private liberal arts college and received an Associate degree in Pre-Medicine which included all the prerequisites for nursing /medical school. (This allowed me to concentrate just on nursing.) Then I applied to the BSN program at my state University. This took the same amount of time to obtain a BSN. I was SERIOUS about what I wanted to do in terms of my education and career. I am a believer that a BSN should the entry level of practice because if nursing is ever going to be taken seriously as a profession, nurses must be cohesive in their education and level of practice. What we learn in nursing school is only the beginning of a career. We must take our education and put it in practice which is where the education really begins. Graduate school and contining education provide the finishing touches for practice. ADN programs were designed to flood the work environment with nurses when there was a shortage.

I guess my reason for getting a BSN instead of ADN is I’m old!! I’ll be 36 in 2 months, if I get a ADN then that means I have to go right back to school and spend more money to get my BSN. However the schools are more expensive when trying to get a BSN and ECPI and Bryant and Stratton only offer ADN, so I guess I don’t have a choice!! 😔 Community colleges is a no go because they only offer nursing classes during the day!

Old???? Girl, you’re what??? Old??? Listen, with the ADN, once you pass boards and start working, the hospital will pay for you to get that BSN. It’s the cheapest way to do it.

Hi, Kendra... I like your videos. I work hard and trying to complete all my task before the next shift come. Then I feel satisfied, but at the end of my shift, something small mistake will happen and all will come to know about this. I feel very sad and useless. I feel angry at God. I feel there is no value for my hard work and dedication. At home, I will get worried, not able to sleep. Do you have anything (suggestions)say about this. Thank you.

Hello, love your videos. I got my CNA, certificate in September. Looking for a job now.. Will the ADN help to be a LPN?

    • @KendraRN
      @KendraRN  8 месяцев назад +2

Congrats on your CNA certificate. The ADN is an associates degree in nursing that will make you eligible to sit for the RN license exam (NCLEX).
Community colleges also offer the LPN program where you won’t get a degree, you will get a certificate and be eligible to sit for the NCLEX-PN exam.

It’s fine she brought that up saying it again isn’t what makes her successful. One of the best nurse in the ICU I’ve worked with started off as nurses aid and then worked her way up to multiple degrees and hospital management. She was a good friend and confided in me about race related issues. Focusing on those issues isn’t what made her successful!

And what Kendra focused on when discussing racial issues is supporting each other and demonstrating one’s strengths and professionalism. Not just talk about being black!
