  • A strathspey by Joan MacDonald Boes
Melnet's (www.melodeon.net) Theme of the month for May 2011 - Tunes from Canada.
Played by Anahata on Oakwood D/G melodeon
This is usually thought of as a Cape Breton tune, though according to internet sources Joan MacDonald Boes was originally from Inverness and moved to Detroit, Michigan as a young woman.
P.S. I'm now told: for "Inverness" read "Inverness County, Cape Breton", not the one in Scotland. That explains things.

I love this tune. I learnt it while sitting on the beach on Britain's most northerly island while watching the sea roll in from the north Atlantic. Brings back wonderful memories. Thank you so much for posting.

Beautifully played, as always! And that Oakwood accordion sounds so mellow & inviting! Why did they ever stop making button boxes? Yours are among the best sounding melodeons I've come across.

Great stuff. I can see why the ear defenders are in the bin when the melodeon is played like that.

This is a really nice tune, especially when you or Harrydebakker plays it!
It could do with being a bit slower though:\
You should start up your own band

+Samson James - start a band? I'm already party of a songs-and-tunes duo (www.maryanahata.co.uk) and ceilidh band (www.fendragon.co.uk). That's quite enough, with a day job too!

+Samson James - also: re speed: maybe, but it's a strathspey, not a slow air. Strathspeys can go surprisingly fast, though admittedly I don't know what's a typical strathspey speed in Cape Breton.

I listened a LOT to Scotty Fitzgerald and consider his renditions to he the acme of the genre. But I think you would find this tempo more acceptable if the chording was a bit more to the style. Still, this is top level playing by a wonderful musician.
