  • Melnet theme of the month for May 2013 - marches
I've been planning to do this for a while, and now there's no excuse!
Admiral Sir William Sidney Smith, KCB, GCTE, FRS (21 June 1764 -- 26 May 1840) was a British naval officer who served in the American and French revolutionary wars. This tune is popular especially with Northumbrian musicians, but it was composed by James Hook (1746-1827), an organist and composer originally from Norwich. I've known it for decades, having first heard it in about 1975 on Alastair Anderson's "Concertina Workshop" album where he is accompanied by Geoff Harris on guitar.
Anahata: D/G melodeon (Dino Baffetti/Oakwood special prototype)

Hooray! Sir Sidney Smith highly approves. This tune and the source for Sir Sidney's fame and the love of the people is his wondrous victory over that Boney guy at the Siege of Arce. Sir Sidney, the Lionhearted, defender of Syris, victor over the French Tyrant (or soon to be). This tune and the common folks dancing to it circa 1800 in celebration of Sir Sidney, the bravest of the brave, the intrepid hero.

Bloomin' loverly! I have never heard this played so well other than by my old mate Allen Josslin. Well done and thank you for posting it. Brought back some good memories as Allen seldom plays these days.

Excellent - exactly as I remember it and matches the sheet music I was using to revise this (believe it or not on a 5-string banjo)

I love your playing of this. I learned it off the same album, though still have no left hand for it. How do you remember where you are in it. I just seem to repeat myself till I fall over. And by the way, isn't it time you cuprinolled your shed.
