Great video! Thanks for reminding me of some memories! I can still smell that place..... I can vividly remember walking through the tunnel and seeing the turf and lights for the first time, and that music playing for the Mariner pregame show.
I loved going to the Kingdome, I went to the Mariners game the day before the tiles fell and I also went to watch it be imploded. I have a lot of great memories there! I will always miss the Kingdome
I was at that game 5 of the '95 Mariners playoff run against the Yankees, in the uppermost row of the 300 level. It was truly a deafeningly loud stadium. I even got to run around the bases as a kid once and remember how lumpy the artificial turf was even in the infield. Thanks LaBreeceTV for covering such memorable Seattle icon.
Same! My Dad brought me to that game when I was a wee kid and did not understand the importance of that series. Saw it all from 95 to that 2001 team. I prayed to God to at least keep me alive so I can witness the M's get into the playoffs. Thank You Lord! (Now we are left with a GM who thinks we deserve to win 54% pf our games and nothing more. Unreal)
I’d love to see an anthology of the multi-use stadium era covering design considerations, choices, innovations and compromises. Although universally derided today, it would be cool to see comparisons and maybe a ranking of which ones got it better than others.
Thank you so much for doing a video I requested. I just started it but I know I'm gonna REALLY REALLY enjoy this one - Much Peace and Love, SpinItAgain
I’ve been waiting for a video like this and I’m only :30 seconds in. Best childhood memories were in that building. Nolan’s last pitch. Peyton’s first season. Griffey Grand Slam. Montell Jordan/Ginuwine Out of school concerts back to back years. I don’t doubt I’ll cry by the end of this video. ❤
Great video. One additional fact about the Kingdome that people may not know about is that in 1976 it hosted the first ever FIFA World Cup qualifier to be played indoors between the US & Canada. It also hosted the NCAA Final Four for men's soccer in 1985, making it the only venue to ever host the Final Four in both basketball & soccer & it is the only time the Final Four for college soccer has been played indoors. As for the Sounders, they weren't terrible at the Kingdome as they made the playoffs 6 out of the 8 years they played there (1976-83) & made the Soccer Bowl (the NASL's championship game) twice. They were also in the top 3 in the NASL in attendance every year & creating a legacy of support that would see the Sounders return this time in MLS (the NASL's successor) in 2009.
As soon as you mentioned Ken Behring, I remembered the old "Almost Live" bit on him. Then I literally laughed out loud that you actually found it and included it. Bravo!
Very fond memories of the Kingdome. Dad would take us to the baseball games but frequently I just wanted to go outside and watch the trains from the ramps.
Most heralded words I can remember mentioning The Kingdome were by none other than the Hall of Fame legend… Dave Niehaus… “And the 0-1 pitch to Edgar Martinez, swung on and lined down the left field line for a base hit! Here comes Joey! Here’s Junior to third base, they’re gonna wave him in! The throw to the plate will be LATE! The Mariners are going to play, for the American League championship! I don’t believe it! It just continues! MY OH MY! Edgar Martinez with a double, ripped down the left field line, and they are going crazy… at The Kingdome!” RIP Dave Niehaus
The Kingdome was a local celebrity. It featured in so much local culture while it was around from songs to legends to shows. That giant cement dome made so many events earsplittingly loud be it sports, concerts or Monster Trucks any trip to the dome was likely to leave you with tinnitus for the night and a smile on your face. Everything in the place was perfect for making noise. Fireworks, Cannons, Laser Lights and Rock 'N' Roll kept things noisy and rowdy even when the product on the field was the things jokes were made of. I went to many an event at the Dome where the host was not necessarily the biggest draw but rather the venue itself, the teams were simply the excuse to be there. Even the Astroturf was something that made the show special. Every sport was a whole different sport from when it was played at any other venue with the way the ball played off the surface the way it did. The Mariners may not have often been a great Baseball team, but when it came to turfball they... well they still weren't that good, but it was entertaining. The Kingdome would never be considered attractive, never was bright or inviting. Hell, it probably looked closer to a fortress or penitentiary. But damn it was fun to go in there and make some noise.
Thank you for doing a video about the kingdome, too bad it only lasted 23 years between 1976-2000. Having the Sonics playing in the kingdome was atrocious.
My grandfather and I were sub contractors for the Kingdome demolition. It took us 3 days to set the explosives and it was all over in 28 seconds. It's amazing what 20,000 pounds of explosives can do.
Thanks for this well done vieo perspective of the KingDome. I had went to plent sports games and other event's at it - during it's life. I feel for the most part it served the purpose that was needed of it. Now Seattle has : Lumen Field - T-Mobile Park - Climate Pledge Aren. Seattle having a sports team in most major sports is nice and maybe it wouldn't happen without the KingDome. Now Seattle just needs to get the Seattle SuperSonics back. The Storm have been a good franchise since entering sports.
The loudest noise in professional sports happened in the final game when Cortez was introduced. There is nothing in Seattle sports history that is close
I lived in Spokane from '76-'86 and visited Seattle a few times a year. The Kingdome was ear-splitting loud for football games, no doubt. But not for baseball games because there was no one there. After living in West Virginia from '86-'89, I moved to Tacoma in 1990, just days before the Mariners' 1990 home opener. I almost wept with joy walking to the Dome, just for the thrill of seeing it again. My last visit was in 1999, a Seahawks game against Tampa Bay. Can't remember the exact date, but it was Trent Dilfer's last start as Bucs' QB because he suffered a season-ending injury in that game. MY FAVORITE KINGDOME MOMENT: Mariners' Opening Day 1986 against the Angels. Jim Presley homered in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, then hit a walk-off grand slam in the 10th.
I was there in 95' at 5 years old with my Dad when we beat the A's. We got free Mario posters and the place went nuts when they lit up the ceiling. Later that year I was watching with my dad on TV when Edgar hit the double and everybody piled on Griffey. I'll always remember seeing his smile underneath the pile of bodies. My dad was flipping out. I miss the Dome
Two discussions in the late 60's and early seventies were: 1.) Weyerhauser, THE timber company in the Northwest, was urging that any stadium in/near Seattle should be built of wood and wood products, and 2.) There would be (and eventually was the case) limited parking, thus not over impacting Seattle traffic on game days, forcing the use of transit in the area. At one point there was even a proposal to extend the Monorail south to any stadium site.
I still remember when it was imploded, it was such a huge deal and so many people went down there to watch it and grab themselves a piece of concrete from the stadium.
I was living across the water at the time. My bedroom was in the basement next to the garage. The sound waves from the emplosion shook the garage door so hard, it actually woke me up from sleeping. I was confused and startled, so I turned on the TV and saw the live footage of the aftermath. I then realized why I woke up.
The first Seahawks game I went to in the Kingdome, I was around 10 or 11, my friend's Mom told me that the entire city of Puyallup could fit inside. Being a bit naive I thought thought she meant the city area and not the number of people. I could only imagine seeing the Puyallup fairgrounds sitting on the 4 of the 40 yard line. 🤣
I grew up with the kingdome and was there when it imploded. It's weird that it's basically been gone longer than it was around; but it was there my entire time growing up. At the time I didn't know any better, but now I realize how god damned ugly and utilitarian it was. I mean it was SO spartan... just insanely cheap. Still, have MANY fond memories of the place from myriad mariners games, to NASL sounders games, to Monsters of Rock with Metallica and Guns and Roses, to truck pull competitions, to the high school football championships, even saw the very first Wrestlemania there on Closed Circuit TV (which was stupid as hell; they did not have anything approaching a large enough "jumbotron" so you watched it on these TV's mounted above the seats on the 2000 level. Basically the equivalent of 15 inch monitors like 25 feet away.)
The Kingdome sucked as a stadium, but it was OUR stadium! It was the home of OUR teams! I spent many times driving 60 miles each way to Mariner games and a few Seahawk games too. I was in there for the 1996 earthquake (Ken Behring was wrong). I have great memories in that building and I was sad to see it go. It wasn't perfect - far from it, but it was "home".
27:55 pretty funny that he wasn't a football fan because I'll never forget how excited he was in 2014 when the Seahawks won the Superbowl, Also a a life long Oregonian, he is dearly missed as the owner of the Blazers.
How many people here been to the Kingdome? I have personally watched one Mariners game. One monster truck show. One sportsman convention and I did one Boat show here. Rest easy Kingdome
The Seattle Pilots would have existed if they were not rushed in. MLB could have awarded teams to Milwaukee, which was seeking a new franchise, Denver, or Dallas-Ft. Worth. Seattle could have built its new stadium on the site where Sicks stadium stood.

I'm an Oregonian. I'm (slightly) embarrassed that I didn't even know the Kingdome was gone. I'm really not a sports fan. But I believe it was 1982 (17yo) when I motored on up to Seattle to see The Who at the Kingdome. I _am_ a music fan. I remember Pete Townshend made some passing complaint about the bad acoustics. But he seems to complain about everything and is kind of a dick and, frankly, overrated. Tastes evolve as we get older. Lol _When as I was about 5 (back around when Edison & Tesla were working on electricity), my parents announced that we were all going to Seattle. My kindergarten aged self immediately started repeatedly asking, _*_"who's Attle?"_* 🤓
Not abandoned, it went down pretty quickly lol but definitely gone and historic for hosting a pro bowl, mlb all-star game, and nba all-star game in its life time.
Why would residents ever vote yes to pay for a sports arena that will not benefit them whatsoever. They pay to build, then get to pay full price to attend a game just like anyone else. It benefits the team, city officials, and the surrounding businesses.. But the residents who paid for it will never be reimbursed...
We voted no on the replacement and got hit with it anyway, raised property taxes. So now we have two stadiums side to side, neither of them truly addressed the parking issues that plagued the kingdome at the height of pro sports attendance.
It would be akin to if the Tacoma Dome was taken down. I'm a Oregonian, but it would feel so fucking weird to know it was gone for good. As absurdly basic as that venue is. More than the Memorial Coliseum. I mean its just a concrete shell with pull out bleachers the quality of your average middle and high school haha.
I'll b honest. I think it's insane that taxpayers have to pay for stadiums for Uber rich ball teams.. We pay and benefit none.. Politicians and select businesses owners (bars, hotels, etc..) are the only ones to benefit monetarily.. And then we are ALLOWED to purchase a ticket.. What a scam.
