I understand that this episode has broken a rule Jonny made about his writing, and I am glad that he could be open about that, but I am also glad that he still chose to tell the story. It was a good episode, and it would make sense for a place such as this to be explored in their travels across the Hellscape, in my opinion.

I love how Jon finally gets to talk about what it was like to be considered "one of them" since the start, and checking in with Martin about HIS experiences. Martin isn't as powerful, I don't even know if he can still vanish at will, but he is less human than the ones suffering. It's an interesting gradient.

as for the episode itself, here's some things i enjoyed: great conversation between jon and martin. i'm glad we get these moments where jon gets to talk about what he's gone through and the effect it's had on his state of mind. like, we all listened to him be dehumanized and ridiculed by other avatars while he was just trying to understand what was happening to him, but it's good to hear him talk about it on his own terms. asking martin how he feels, processing the complicity they unwillingly share in this situation, and still being able to share some soft banter together all feeds me so well.
the interaction with the inspector is great, because on the one hand, this guy can go get fucked, but on the other hand, it's good that martin is as uncomfortable as he clearly is in being the judge to decide his fate. so much of the magnus archives is trying to make the best decision when there are no good choices available, and while i think he made the right choice here, it's good that it doesn't feel right. (that said, love that the decision comes after the inspector called jon a scrawny little tit. like 'okay, you're gonna be rude to my boyfriend? bye then.')

The prison here seems to be a diffuse mix of different Fears, kind of like the monument to desperate scholars: the cops are The Stranger, the cell could be The Buried, the implied surveillance is The Eye, the officials altering legislation could be The Spiral, the folks outside the prison could be some mixture of The Lonely and The Desolation (they make our unnamed prisoner feel isolated from the outside world but cause her physical and emotional pain nonetheless with how they treat her)

The fact that it shares so many different elements from various powers makes me believe this one might be the Extinction. I mean, injustice was often thought by people who feared the apocalypse as a major part of it, so I don’t think it’s that far of a stretch to believe that this part of the Extinction is the specific fear of a dystopian apocalypse like 1984. Actually reminds me quite a bit of the Trial by Franz Kafka.

I don’t know that I would have been able to handle some of these topics with half as much grace as you have, Jonny. The warning was appreciated, though, especially listening to this in 2024 with the state of the world. It was well written and I’m glad that it was published as originally written anyway. Sometimes I've been in a place where I'm not ready for the content that horror explores and am glad to have a heads up so I know what to expect. I think it's even more important in horror than other genres since it so often serves as an exploration of pain. Personally that's why I like horror so much. It helps me understand the fears of others and reminds me that I'm not alone when I find myself in dark places. Thank you for sharing your work and I hope that doing so has helped you work through your own pain.

“I guess we should get used to it. Knowing that all these awful things are happening for our benefit.”
“Maybe it’s better if it never gets comfortable”
Jon and Martin are walking through as privileged people in an unjust world. To be privileged is to have others suffer on your behalf, more or less. However, the knowledge of this injustice is its own kind of suffering for the privileged. And so the disprivileged suffer for the sake of the privileged, and the privileged suffer with knowledge of suffering. BUT in an unjust system, there is no middle ground between privilege and disprivilege, and so all are made to endure different kinds of suffering.
The message is clear: in order to minimize suffering in the world, privilege and disprivilege must be destroyed.

Hellscapes are mindgames. If you figure them out, reality changes. You have to know what they're after to conquer them. Then you have to embrace the death coming for you. Make your mind go away if you are held safely. Dying does nothing to you, so it becomes a weapon. The muscle you're using is mental acceptance, so fear can no longer be harvested.
But as others said, so much of this season isn't fear, its just pain.

The warning in the beginning of the episode could have been given for almost any other episode in this season. But this one is tangentially connected to curent politics so we must warn everyone. This episode didn't even go in depth on how a justice system can screw you over. The various legal loopholes the state can use to unjustly prosecute or imprison you.

I'm allowed to know what Spiderman is. 😄
On the subject of trauma and fear though. One definitely gives rise to another. Maybe they are different kinds of "darkness" that bleed into each other (not unlike the 14 fears). But as a source of horror it is valid. More than that, it can give a voice to the traumatized. More often than not those who are traumatized don't talk and we don't get their perspective. They shut themselves up, wanting the experience to "go away" while those who inflicted the trauma do all the talking, and more often than not get away with creating more trauma. In fact victimizing "others" becomes viewed as normal. Always has. I mean, how long has owning another human being been "normal" in our world history? It wasn't until the publication of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," which gave voice to the perspective of enslaved people, that privileged white folk in the USA really started to have empathy for what black people in the American south went through and formed the abolitionist movement.
Right now the masses are more like the Eye. Enjoying watching other people suffering for entertainment. Empathizing and siding with the abuser who is more often the one that gives their twisted perspective and justifications. We could, however, become a more empathetic Eye. Watching the trauma of others, empathizing with the abused, putting ourselves in their place, and using that perspective to make the world a more just place. What is trauma like for the traumatized? Horror, from the eyes of the horrified rather than the monster, who is in power and not afraid.
We need to hear trauma. Not for our petty and sick enjoyment, but so that we can transform that pain into action. To drive us to right the unrightable wrongs, as it were. The "darkness" as such wants us to wallow in the pain, fear, and misery of an unfixable world with only the illusion of hope and light to create real dispare for us. The "light" would have us reach for the "unreachable star" no matter how hopeless, no matter how far. To fight for what's right without question or pause. We must be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause. Yes, you know what I'm paraphrasing. I'm fighting back tears as I quote that song because despite how lunatic mad it sounds, or is, it is true and stirs some powerful emotion in me.
I never shy away from looking at the darkest darkness the human mind, or society, has to offer. But I don't do it as a sick voyuer that enjoys watching the suffering. I want to know what needs to be fixed.

Great episode. I’m sorry you have had negative experiences with law enforcement in the past. As a trained law enforcement officer myself I can tell you it absolutely enrages those cops that abide by the law when we come across those few that think they are above the law because they enforce it. Again my deepest condolences and thank for your wonderful work.

The intro at the beginning was short and to the point, which I respect.
It's certainly a good thing that not every single police officer on the planet is a terrible being.
If that were true, well... there are worse horrors out there than those that exist in The Magnus Archives.

There is a lot to say about "not every single police officer on the planet is a terrible being".
I'm theoretically willing to accept that, depending on how you rate "being terrible". However, between (when this was originally released) the murder of Walter Wallace Jr and the entire point of having Basira and Daisy as characters, the statement is made in at best bad taste, and at worst with veiled malicious intent.
So, rather than writing an entire novel, I'll just say that there are worse horrors out there than those that exist in The Magnus Archives, Mark, and I am grateful you're allowed to believe otherwise.

@@biancamlf288 Logically speaking though, there _are_ police who are decent human beings. I know, "the system is corrupt and they're willfully part of it" blah blah blah... but if being part of a corrupt system makes you a bad person, then we're all evil in some way or another. I guarantee you some people become police because they want to do good. And some - most - of the criminals they catch _are_ real criminals. It's not like people can just become vigilantes and fight crime without a badge - not only would that get them arrested, but it would lead to a lot of people with twisted ideas of "justice" taking it into their own hands.
Is the police system corrupt? Absolutely. Are all police officers selling a piece of their soul to be part of it? Yes. Does that make all of them onotoligcally evil? No, I don't think so. I think many are aware of the corruption but join because they think they can make a difference. And rarely, they do.
Will I trust the police? No, probably not ever. But I'm a person of logic, and logically I understand that extreme statements like "all of (group) are evil!" are almost never true, and often do more harm than good.
Also, I understand the purpose of slogans and riots and anger, and it is a good thing. Nuance and rationale alone will not solve the problem that is police corruption. We need fighters. But we also cannot fight each other - let people debate calmly and rationally when there is an opportunity for persuasion and compromise... and let rioters and protestors run the streets when there isn't. It's through this balance that we can create change.

Coming from the Guatemala experience, this episode felt light to be honest. I mean, I dont want to be un-emphatic with the England/or personal experiences, but you really should look out for what happened un Guatemala during the civil war (1962-1996). That leaved at least 50000 people kidnapped/dissaapeared/killed by the State (police and military). In some manner was similar to what's represented here, but esa way worse. Check out the book Papeer Cadávers and hoy Will understand what I mean. On the other hand, maybe was difficult this episode on various aspects, but was well performed and written. Respect for that.

@@cupidcalling5599, it's been awhile, so I am not sure which episode this is. However in general, I really enjoyed the spooky early episodes. Later, they just pulled back the curtain to explain the shadowy ambiguous spooky side, and failed at the world building behind it so it was no longer shadowy or spooky. It devolves into a poorly written mellow drama. Then, there is the long form bad poetry, which takes up large chunks of later episodes. Cringe. Then, there is all the on the nose woke aspects. If you are trying to relay a message through art, ham fisted is usually not way to go. Overall it went from spooky to trash, not even worthy of the title of soap opera.
